Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia (JEI) publishes original research papers and short communications that covers the basic and applied aspect of insects and mites or other arthropods in agriculture, forestry, human and animal health, and natural resources and environmental management. The journal is published by Perhimpunan Entomologi Indonesia (Entomological Society of Indonesia). JEI was first published at the beginning of 2004 with twice per year in frequency on March and September. Since 2015, Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia has been published three times per year on March, July, and November.

Abstract

Hyposidra talaca (Walker) is an important pest of tea plant. H. talaca can cause losses of between 40–100% in the dry season if proper control is not carried out. H. talaca has natural enemies such as predators, parasitoids, and pathogens. One of the entomopathogens is NPV. This study aims to obtain molecular characteristics through DNA polymerase sequences and determine the virulence level of NPV isolates from H. talaca. The same species from different locations can have genetic variability. Therefore, molecular characterization by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on DNA polymerase sequences is one way to study the genetics of HytaNPV. NPV was isolated from infected H. talaca larvae collected from the field. The DNA isolates were used as templates for PCR for DNA polymerase gene amplification with an amplicon target of ±1,000 bp. A sequencing process followed the PCR provides nucleotide sequence. HytaNPV DNA polymerase sequencing results were aligned with GenBank's BLAST data to provide information on the relationship of HytaNPV to NPVs isolated from other regions. Based on molecular character analysis using DNA polymerase gene sequence, HytaNPV Bogor has a homology level of 93.9% with HytaNPV isolated from India. HytaNPV Bogor has a genetic relationship with the NPV that infects Buzura suppressaria from China and Australia. HytaNPV Bogor is similar to the NPV that infects H. talaca from India. The bioassay of HytaNPV isolate against H. talaca showed the highest LT50 value of 1.92 days was found in concentration of 1.58 x 107 POBs/ml in second instar larvae.

Abstract

Yellow stem borer (YSB) of rice, Scirpophaga incertulas Walker, causes significant damage to rice production in Indonesia. YSB management largely depends on insecticide applications and alternative management practices are very few and impractical. Pheromone-mediated mating disruption (MD) is a new way to manage YSB while reducing dependence on conventional insecticides. Pheronâ„¢ RSB is an low-density polyethylene (LDPE) MD dispenser, containing 1.25 g of a four-way blended insect sex pheromone components - Z11-Hexadecenal, Z9-Hexadecenal, Z13-Octadecenal, Z9-Octadecenal in a ratio of 75, 8.6, 9.4, and 7 respectively. The objective is to evaluate MD by Pheronâ„¢ RSB as a tool for season-long management of YSB. Dispensers were applied at a rate of 20 dispensers/ha in a minimum area of 4 ha. We conducted these trials at 74 locations, non-replicated, across Java, in the wet and dry seasons of 2020–2021 where YSB are endemic and problematic. Efficacy of MD in pheromone foundational practice (PFP) was compared to conventional grower practice (CGP). Trap reduction, a measure of MD was significantly higher (>70%) in PFP as compared to CGP. A major benefit of MD is reduction in damage. Significantly lower damage to rice tillers (40–46%) was seen in PFP compared to CGP. Lower damage in PFP likely protected yield by 0.43 to 0.76 ton/ha compared to CGP. Compared to PFP, CGP required 40–56% higher insecticide applications to manage YSB.  Pheronâ„¢ RSB provided season-long MD and proved to be a powerful tool for integrated management of YSB.

Abstract

Dengue prevention efforts are limited to the control strategies of its vector and the management of breeding sites. New alternatives for dengue vector control that are sustainable and more environmentally friendly are needed to complement the government's current efforts. Research on Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti Linnaeus mosquitoes as an alternative biocontrol strategy has been performed in Yogyakarta City. However, one of the concerns of the community members and stakeholders about this technology is the safety aspect regarding the transmission of Wolbachia to other species and the possibility that humans will contract Wolbachia. This study aimed to address these concerns, namely to find out whether horizontal transmission of Wolbachia occurred from A. aegypti that were released to other species and whether residents living in the released areas were infected with Wolbachia. The research was conducted in Dusun Nogotirto and Dusun Kronggahan (Sleman Regency), as well as in Dusun Jomblangan and Dusun Singosaren (Bantul Regency), Yogyakarta Special Province. Wolbachia qPCR screening using the target gene WD0513 was performed on 922 Culex quinquefasciatus Say and 331 Aedes albopictus (Skuse). ELISA test was carried out on 190 pairs of plasma samples, namely the sample before the Wolbachia frequency was established (still <80%) and the sample after it was established (>80%). The results showed no evidence of Wolbachia transfer from Wolbachia-infected A. aegypti to other mosquito species coexisting in the same habitat or to humans. This study corroborates the safety evidence of Wolbachia-infected A. aegypti technology as an alternative to control dengue virus transmission

Abstract

Sarcoptes scabiei (Dee Geer) is the mite that causes scabies or mange. The mites live in the skin layers of humans and mammals. Nowadays, S. scabiei is classified according to their hospes and S. scabiei that lives in human is called Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. Controlling and eradicating human scabies, especially at the community level, requires understanding scabies as a pathogen and its interaction with humans. This paper discusses the biology of S. scabiei var. hominis and the interactions between mites and humans as hosts.

Abstract

Citrus is a popular horticultural crop planted in different areas in Indonesia. The needs for fruits increases every year, yet production cannot fulfill market demand. One of the contraints are the red scale pest attacks Aonidiella aurantii (Maskel). The implemeintation of standard operating procedure (SOP) in citrus cultural practices is expected to have effects on the population and intensity of red scale attacks. The research was carried out from January to August 2020 on farmer's orchards located at the center of citrus production in Batu, East Java, Indonesia. This experimental study used the research design theory method. The plots were devided into 2 conditions; first, the plots applied SOP, such as regular pruning, sanitation, and organic fertilizer application. While, the second was the conventional plots representing the common farmer maintenance, farmer of not pruning and cleaning weeds throughout the garden, and using NKP inorganic fertilizer. Every evaluated plot covered 1,500 m2, and 10 plants were systematically sampled from every plot. The parameters included numbers of attacked fruits, the abundance of natural enemies and attack intensity of A. aurantii that were taken from the cardinal directions. The results of the study showed that the implementation of SOP was able to significantly reduce population density and intensity of A. aurantii pest attacks and was able to increase the abundance of natural enemies and the quality of citrus fruit when compared to conventional citrus cultivation methods.

Abstract

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is crital pest of chili plants. Besides using chemical insecticides to control B. tabaci, the actions that can be taken for B. tabaci management include applying repellent compounds. This research aims to study the potential of various commercial corn varieties in producing repellent compounds for B. tabaci. The method used in this research involved testing the response of B. tabaci using a Y tube olfactometer and GCMS analysis on varieties P-21, Bisi-18, NK-212, and Pertiwi 3 on a laboratory scale. Volatile compounds were collected from corn plants aged 3–10 weeks after planting (WAP). The results showed that Bisi-18, P-21, NK-212, and Pertiwi 3 maize exhibited repellency against B. tabaci. The highest repellency for all corn varieties was observed at 10 WAP. The P-21 variety exhibited 80% repellency, followed by Pertiwi 3 and Bisi-18 with 78% repellency, while NK-212 showed the weakest repellencyat 60%. Results from volatile compounds identification of each maize varieties demonstrated revealed several compounds with repellent properties against B. tabaci, including 9-otadecenoic acid (Z)-, 9-octadecenamide, (Z)-, delta-guaiene, alpha-guaiene, beta caryophyllene, and patchouli alcohol. Using maize plants to manage B. tabaci has the potential to be an environmentally friendly management technique. Further research is needed on B. tabaci management technique to achieve a more effective and efficient combination.

Abstract

The major royal jelly protein 2 (mrjp2) gene is one of the molecular markers that can discriminate between Apis cerana Fabricius and A. mellifera Linnaeus. Due to the lack of mrjp2 gene sequences registered in GenBank for Indonesian A. cerana and A. mellifera, DNA characterization and bioinformatics analysis were needed. This research aimed to characterize the exon-intron organization of mrjp2 genes for both Indonesian bee species and analyze the phylogenetic relationship with other mrjp family genes. DNA samples of Apis cerana and A. mellifera, collected from Bogor, were amplified using MF-MR primer at annealing temperatures of 47 oC and 50 oC, respectively. The length of A. cerana and A. mellifera DNA sequences were 579 and 597 bp, respectively. The DNA sequences of both species were comprised of partial exons 1, introns 1, exons 2, introns 2, and partial exon 3. The number of putative amino acids of A. cerana and A. mellifera mrjp2 genes were 111 and 123, respectively. We confirmed that the partial MRJP2 putative amino acids of both honey bees belong to the MRJP family and contained the peptide signal in the 14 first amino acid sites. Nucleotide variation of the mrjp2 gene in A. cerana was higher than A. mellifera. Phylogenetic tree construction showed that A. cerana and A. mellifera form a monophyletic clade with the A. mellifera mrjp7 gene and another mrjp family gene clustered as reported in a previous study.

Abstract

The cabbage crop caterpillar, Crocidolomia pavonana, that can be very damaging to Brassicaceae plants in Indonesia, particularly in the Cianjur Regency. Farmers in the area have been using synthetic insecticides like emamectin benzoate to control this pest, but it seems that continuous use of these insecticides can lead to resistance in the pest. This research aimed to determine the level of resistance and distribution of emamectin benzoate in C. pavonana in Cianjur Regency. Field populations of C. pavonana were collected from five villages in three districts in Cianjur Regency. As a comparison, a laboratory population was used to determine the resistance ratio. All populations were tested for toxicity to determine the LC50. The results showed that populations of C. pavonana from Cianjur Regency were still susceptible to emamectin benzoate. Treatment at 22.08 í— 10-4 mg a.i/l concentration in 72 hours after treatment showed that the population's mortality was >90%. The resistance ratios of C. pavonana in Cianjur Regency were quite concerning (resistance indocation), with a range of 1.33–2.01 indicating resistance to emamectin benzoate was moderate. Interestingly, the Sindang Jaya population showed the highest resistance ratio. It's worth noting that over 90% of farmers in the region use this insecticide in the field, which supports the idea of resistance to the chemical. This study provided valuable insight into the distribution of insecticide used and resistance levels of C. pavonana in the area support each other.

Abstract

Black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus)) or BSF are insects that process organic waste, with larvae rich in nutrients and potential as an alternative protein source for food and feed. Astaxanthin, an antioxidant found in plants, algae, and crustaceans, is also assumed to be present in insects like BSF. This study examined the impact of feeding different organic wastes on BSF larval growth and astaxanthin content in its pupae. The experimental design involved four treatments: fruit and vegetable scraps (BS), tofu pulp (AT), rice leftovers (N), and a mix of fruit and vegetable scraps, tofu pulp and rice left-over (C), with animal feed T51 as control. Each treatment was repeated three times. Growth parameters of BSF such as weight, length, and larval characteristics, along with the chemical content of pupae, including astaxanthin, were measured. Pupae were extracted using a triphasic maceration method with n-heptane, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, butanol-l, and distilled water. Compound identification was done using terpenoid qualitative tests, thin layer chromatography (TLC), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The findings revealed that fruit and vegetable scraps (BS) significantly increased larval body size, with a weight of 0.09 ± 0.04 grams/larvae and a length of 1.49 ± 0.31 cm/larvae. LC-MS analysis detected lutein derivatives, anisodamine, resveratrol derivatives, dehydroarginine, and astaxanthin derivatives with a molecular mass of 597.23 m/z in BSF larvae fed on fruit and vegetable scraps.

Abstract

Helopeltis bradyi, merupakan salah satu hama perkebunan teh yang menyebabkan kerusakan hingga penurunan hasil produksi tanaman. Cendawan Lecanicillium lecanii sebagai musuh alami merupakan pengendalian alternatif yang telah diteliti untuk menekan perkembangan dan populasi H. bradyi. Penelitian bertujuan mengetahui patogenesitas blastospora dan konidia terhadap mortalitas, serta dampaknya terhadap kemampuan makan dan reproduksi H. bradyi. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan sepuluh perlakuan dan lima ulangan, termasuk kontrol positif (insektisida deltametrin), kontrol negatif (akuades), serta konsentrasi blastospora (2,45 × 106 hingga 2,45 × 109 blastospora/ml) dan konidia (2,78 × 106 hingga 2,78 × 109 konidia/ml) L. lecanii. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa L. lecanii dengan konsentrasi 2,78 × 109 konidia/ml menyebabkan kematian H. bradyi sebesar 86% dan rata-rata 223,89 tusukan pada 7 hari setelah aplikasi. LC50 dan LT50 konidia L. lecanii lebih rendah, yaitu 6,62 × 105 konidia/ml dan 4,44 hari dibandingkan dengan blastospora, yaitu 2,20 × 107 blastospora/ml dan 5,37 hari. Aplikasi L. lecanii dengan konsentrasi 2,45 × 109 blastospora/ml menghasilkan jumlah telur terendah, yaitu 5,40 butir. Blastospora maupun konidia L. lecanii terbukti efektif dalam mengendalikan H. bradyi. Konidia memberikan hasil terbaik dalam mortalitas dan pengurangan aktivitas makan nimfa instar III, sementara blastospora juga efektif meskipun dengan hasil yang sedikit lebih rendah. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan L. lecanii dapat menjadi alternatif pengendalian hama yang ramah lingkungan dan berkelanjutan dibandingkan insektisida sintetik.
