Abstract

This study examines the harmony of the "Luberan" tradition in implementing the Qur'anic moderation religious values. This study uses a qualitative method of the field research approach. This analysis shows that; 1) The Luberan tradition applies the four parameters of religious moderation compiled by the Director General of Islamic Education, Kemang, Republic of Indonesia. First, the Luberan tradition plays a role in strengthening nationalism, which is illustrated through the poem Sekar Gendhing Asmaradana as a Javanese song with the theme of love for the motherland, cultural preservation, and activities to protect the environment as a form of implementing its contents. QS. Al Qashash: 85 and QS. An-Nisa': 66. Second, tolerance education in Luberan culture can be seen through the interaction between Muslim and non-Muslim residents in organizing events, the habit of exchanging food, and giving each other. Third, a study on the theme of peaceful Islam shows the integration of QS al-mumtahinah verse 8 as an anti-radicalism and anti-violence educational model. 2) Cultural practices in strengthening the value of religious moderation are taught from generation to generation through religious rituals and mysticism in Luberan culture. This research contributes to finding the concept of strengthening the values of culture-based religious moderation. In addition, this research can also be used as a basis for the Ministry of Religion to integrate cultural practices as a vehicle for moderation in religion.

Abstract

This article is based on the Ayat-Ayat Semes ta dan Nalar Ayat-ayat Semesta written by Agus Purwanto and Tafsir 'Ilmi: Animals in the Perspective of the Qur'an and Science published by Lembaga Pentashih Mushaf al-Qur'an (LPMQ) of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia in collaboration with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences with a focus on the interpretation of the word "Ant" or al-namlah in QS. al-Naml [27]: 18. Preliminary findings show that the interpretations of Puwanto and LPMQ tend to be different even though they are both based on scientific reasons. There are three questions asked in explaining this. First, what is the construction of Agus Purwanto and LPMQ's interpretation of "Ants" in the Qur'an. Second, why do the two differ in interpretation regarding the theme? Third, what are the implications of these different interpretations on the discourse of ilmi interpretation. This article uses content analysis to show Purwanto's interpretive construction of the diction "Qā lat namlah" in QS. al-Naml [27]:18 means "queen of ants," while LPMQ means "al-namlah" with "an ant," so it has a different meaning. This difference lies in the emphasis of both;  Purwanto emphasizes more linguistic aspects as a support for scientific findings to interpret  "al-namlah" with the queen ant, which also emphasizes that this queen is the leader in the colony. At the same time, LPMQ uses an interpretive logic that does not emphasize "who rules the ants"  These two models of interpretation must be positioned as part of an evolving dynamic of interpretation; Moreover, it is recognized that the same discourse also appeared in explanation in the past although it was more on theological and linguistic aspects.

Abstract

The Qur'an states that human beings were created with a duty to prosper the earth; one of which is by preserving the environment and reforestation. This study aims to unveil the hadiths on reforestation by employing the Maqāṣid SharÄ«”˜ah approach of YÅ«suf al-QaraḍāwÄ«. This paper is a qualitative study with content analysis and descriptive-analytical approaches. This study found that the hadiths about the recommendation for plantation and reforestation must be interpreted generally, not restricted to certain conditions. Thus the command for reforestation applies in general, not limited to certain conditions and places. Reforestation must be carried out anywhere and anytime until the end of the day. While the proper meaning of the hadith, which contains the threat of hell for cutting down the Bidara tree, is that such a threat is addressed or people who cut down the tree in open space where it serves as a shelter for travellers and animal habitats. In addition, the hadith should also be understood to a more general meaning, particularly for the Bidara tree and all trees with the same function as shelters.

Abstract

This study discusses the epistemological reasoning of nationalism and national fiqh at Islamic boarding schools, especially at the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, Kediri, East Java. Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School was chosen purposively as the research location. With a case study approach, this article reveals the epistemological reasoning of nationalism that occurs and develops in the research location. The results of the study show that there has been a shift in the epistemology of nationalism. This epistemological shift can be seen from the inconsistency of meaning and choice of action taken. From the theory of social transformation, certain social constructions will also affect specific cognitions or awareness””likewise, the epistemology of nationalism at the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School. During the phase of the struggle against Dutch colonialism, nationalism was interpreted as a form of jihad against non-Muslims, along with the emergence of an awareness of establishing an Islamic state. However, since the establishment of Ma'had Aly Lirboyo, which has the peculiarities of nationalism, nationalism has shifted in meaning to become a form of awareness against radicalism movements born of Islamic Group, such as Hizb at-Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) and the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). The assertion that the State of Indonesia is a state whose government is legitimate and opposing it is a prohibited action further confirms this shift in the epistemology of nationalism.

Abstract

Sexual violence as a crime against humanity in the resilience of migrant workers' families is caused by the lack of cognitive and ethical abilities of basic sexual orientation in religion. The research seeks to formulate the ethical values of preventive sexual education in the study of the Qur'an as a guide for sexual education in the family. The literature review is analyzed descriptively through the study of Toshihiko Isutzu's thematic structural interpretation where the data is analyzed using the family resilience theory. As a result, first, the concept of family resilience in the Qur'an is oriented to three types, namely zurriyyatan muslimatan, zurriyatan thayyiba, and zurriyyat hafidza with the characteristics of educational values. Second, preventive sex is shown in conceptual terms that are not less than 6 themes, such as al Harsu, al Rafas, al Nikah, al Zaujiyyah, al Bid'u, and al Farju. As the basis for the value of sexual education in early childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Third, the value of sexual education as a family resilience strategy provides three sexological paradigms: physiological, psychological, social, humanism, ritual, and spiritual. Through this paradigm, it is expected to suppress acts of violence and orientation. Deviant sexual behavior, especially for families of migrant workers.

Abstract

In the contemporary era, tafsir has evolved, leading to diverse methods and patterns, reflecting its nature as a human endeavor that develops across generations. One example is Allah's prohibition of marriage between believers and idolaters, which continues to draw scholarly interest. Researchers explore this verse to understand its meaning, context, and application, particularly in relation to Indonesian legal principles. This study, using library research and a qualitative approach, examines the prohibition of interfaith marriage in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 221, based on Tafsir Ibnu Katsir and Tafsir Al-Misbah. The findings align with Indonesian law, specifically Article 2, paragraph (1) of Act No. 1 of 1974 on Marriage and its amendment under Law No. 16 of 2019, both of which affirm that marriages are only valid if conducted according to the religious rules of the individuals involved, thus prohibiting interfaith marriages.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the practice of vote buying and selling in general elections from an Islamic perspective. This research applies a qualitative approach with library research as its method. The data collection technique employed is documentation, accompanied by data analysis techniques such as content analysis, induction, and deduction. The conclusions from the discussion in this article are as follows. First, votes buying and selling in general elections is a practice where voters’ votes are treated as commodities or merchandise in exchange for money, goods, or services. Second, from an Islamic viewpoint, votes buying and selling in general elections is a reprehensible practice and is explicitly prohibited because it violates the fundamental principles of justice, honesty, and trust that are advocated by the religion. Third, the practice of votes buying and selling in elections damages the social order by undermining trust in the integrity of the political system, reducing participation in elections, weakening social cohesion, and destabilizing the political stability of Islamic communities. Fourth, the Islamic solution to overcome the votes buying and selling in general elections includes revitalizing Islamic political education, increasing public awareness through campaigns about the dangers of vote buying and selling in elections, educating the public about Islamic values that support honesty and integrity in the political process, providing sharia sanctions for individuals involved in buying and selling votes in elections, as well as enhancing the role of ulama to promote political ethics under Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The article examines the implications of social media misuse by Yoruba Muslim preachers (du’āt) on intra-religious peaceful coexistence. The research aims to highlight how the irresponsible use of online platforms by these preachers has led to increased hostility and division within the Muslim community. The study emphasizes the importance of adhering to Islamic principles that promote unity, tolerance, and mutual respect when conducting da’wah (religious outreach) online. To achieve this, the researchers used a descriptive survey design to analyze the social media activities of Yoruba, Nigeria du‘āt. The study reveals that some preachers have engaged in behavior contrary to Islamic teachings, such as spreading misinformation, hate speech, and engaging in personal attacks. This misuse of social media has caused polarization, mistrust, and even led to legal actions, further harming the peaceful coexistence of the Muslim community. The paper concludes that du‘āt must practice responsible and ethical online da‘wah that aligns with Islamic values, particularly those that foster harmony and peaceful coexistence. Abstract

Sufism has been a key vehicle for expressing Islam. In the 18th century, its growth in West Africa led to a surge in Islamic conversions and the emergence of influential Muslim intellectuals, educators, and political leaders. Salafis, inspired by the writings of scholars who championed jihad and Islamic reforms, are often viewed as the sole jihadist group in the region. This study uses qualitative techniques and a historical lens to examine the significance of Sufism in West Africa, challenging the notion of Sufi passivity. It highlights key factors driving Islam’s expansion, paradigm shifts, and societal Islamization, while analyzing the Sufi Brotherhood’s methods of spreading Islam and shaping society. The research disputes the idea that Sufis are solely peaceful, non-political, or disengaged from activism. It focuses on how Sufis in West Africa not only spread Islam but also established states, governed people, and promoted Islam through conquest jihad. Contrary to popular belief, Sufism is not limited to political silence or spiritual withdrawal; it evolved through the Zawiya, who, despite persecution, played an active role in shaping society.
