Abstract

This study explores the implementation of a language policy at the Al Islahiyyah Islamic Boarding School, which emphasizes the use of the Javanese language (Krama) across various levels. The policy aligns with traditional cultural practices, dividing the language into three levels: Krama Inggil, Krama Alus, and Ngoko Alus, each reflecting different degrees of respect and social hierarchy. The methodology involved qualitative analysis through observations and interviews with students and teachers to assess the application and challenges of this policy. Results indicate that the policy successfully preserves cultural heritage and fosters respect and politeness among students. However, it also presents challenges due to the diverse linguistic backgrounds of the students, many of whom are not familiar with proper Javanese usage at home. The study concludes that while the language policy contributes positively to cultural identity and linguistic proficiency, it requires significant adaptation efforts. Furthermore, the research suggests the need for future studies to examine the long-term effects of the policy on students' proficiency in other languages and its broader implications in a multilingual context. Future research should also investigate the integration of other languages into the curriculum and track the students' linguistic and cultural adaptability post-graduation to provide a comprehensive understanding of the policy's impact.

Abstract

This article study aims to identify the usage frequency, analyse the usage context, compare usage patterns, and provide recommendations for teaching Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA), with the focus on the terms pemelajar and pembelajar. Utilizing corpus analysis with AntConc, the term pemelajar is found to appear 697 times, whereas pembelajar appears 168 times across twenty distinct texts. The KWIC (Key Word in Context) analysis reveals that pemelajar frequently refers to BIPA students in instructional and descriptive contexts, with collocations such as diminta, dalam, and bipa. In contrast, pembelajar is used in more formal contexts related to the BIPA learning process, with collocations including bipa, bahasa, and dalam. N-Gram analysis indicates that the phrase "pemelajar bipa" is the most frequently occurring, suggesting a preference for its use in informal contexts. Based on these findings, it is recommended that BIPA instruction place greater emphasis on using the term pemelajar in instructional materials and curricula. Furthermore, it is advised that explanations of the contextual differences and usage of these terms be included in BIPA teacher training modules to enhance understanding and teaching effectiveness. This research offers practical guidance for BIPA educators in selecting appropriate terminology and strengthens Indonesian language instruction by providing a deeper understanding of the context and frequency of these key terms.

Abstract

This study examines the pronunciation difficulties encountered by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students while articulating specific English consonant sounds absent in Indonesian phonology. It also examines the elements that contribute to these pronunciation issues. The research investigates six English consonants: /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʒ/, /j/, and /w/. A mixed-method approach was utilized, collecting qualitative data via interviews and thorough pronunciation analysis, while quantitative data were obtained through a perception questionnaire. Thirty ninth-grade students’ from Mts Muhammadiyah Karangkajen Yogyakarta, Indonesia, participated in the study. Pronunciation accuracy was assessed using PRAAT and audio samples from the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (CALD). The findings reveal that /ð/ is the most challenging sound, as appropriately said by just 42% of students, while /v/ is the least difficult, with 51% accuracy. The pronunciation challenges revealed significant differences in pitch and intensity between students’ pronunciations and reference sounds. Furthermore, students reported inadequate feedback regarding their pronunciation and perceived English classes as uninteresting. The study underscores the importance of comprehensive educational methods that include all English consonant and vowel sounds to enhance pronunciation instruction.

Abstract

Learning English may be beneficial for adults to explore many things and communicate with others. A strong knowledge of English vocabulary is needed to fulfill those purposes. However, adults may think that they have no time to learn English. Therefore, gamification has become one of the best ways to learn English vocabulary. One of the gamification tools that can be used to learn is Duolingo. Duolingo is a game-based application to help people learn a foreign language, especially English. One research question is presented in this research: “What factors affect adults to use Duolingo to enhance motivation in learning English vocabulary? This research aims to find out factors that affect adults to utilize Duolingo to improve their motivation in learning English vocabulary. This mixed method of research used a close-ended questionnaire containing 17 items of Likert-scale statements and an in-depth interview to gather the data. The Likert-scale questionnaire was distributed to 41 participants and the online Zoom meeting was conducted with 3 participants. This research applies TKT 3 which aims to prove the concept (proof-of-concept) of important functions and/or characteristics analytically and experimentally. The findings displayed that the game features present some beneficial impacts for the users such as better understanding in learning English vocabulary. It is expected that future researchers employ many participants so the results can be specified and used in broader educational contexts.

Abstract

Humor is a universal language that cuts across cultural barriers. Trevor Noah's stand-up special "Don't Lose Your Accent / Learning Accents are good examples of humor in the classroom. The theory of systemic functional linguistics says language functions as a system for meaning-making. A positive and fun atmosphere in the learning environment can increase motivation and interest in the language. Moreover, it often involves wordplay, puns, and linguistic creativity. Engaging in language play helps learners become more comfortable with the structure and flexibility of the language, fostering linguistic creativity and a deeper understanding of how the language works. In hence, Incorporating humor into language learning can be done through a variety of means, including funny anecdotes, jokes, cartoons, humorous videos, and interactive activities. It's essential to strike a balance between humor and educational content, ensuring that the humor enhances the learning experience rather than becoming a distraction

Abstract

English has been adopted as a medium of instruction in international classes at Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) for around six years now. However, research examining its use is very rare. This study then aims to investigate the experience of lecturers and university students using English medium instruction in international classes at UNP seen from six aspects. The study focused on undergraduate social science programs in four faculties. Nine lecturers and eight students were chosen through purposive sampling technique to participate. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to obtain data for this descriptive qualitative study. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Generally, the result reveals that (1) the teaching and learning are conducted bilingually; (2) lecturers use the same method while teaching in the EMI and non-EMI classes & focus on the content not the language; (3) both students and lecturers have difficulty in using English to interact; (4) the use of English has, to some extent, developed the participants’ English skills; (5) there is lack of support to improve the English skills of both participants, thus (6) trainings on how to enhance the English skills of both lecturers and students are necessary.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceived needs, lacks, and wants of sports students in learning English to develop an effective English coursebook tailored to their academic and professional contexts. Despite the significance of English proficiency in sports education, existing materials lack alignment with the unique requirements of sports students, creating a research gap in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for this field. The study employed a quantitative approach, collecting data through a need’s analysis questionnaire distributed to 100 sports students from three universities—two private universities and one public university—in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The questionnaire, consisting of 132 items divided into necessities, lacks, and wants, was analyzed using a Likert scale. Data collection was conducted online via Google Forms. The findings indicate that students prioritize learning materials with practical applications and project-based approaches, particularly for communication skills and sports-related vocabulary. However, significant gaps were identified in students’ language skills and foundational language components, emphasizing the need for targeted instructional interventions. The study concludes by recommending the development of a specialized ESP coursebook that integrates project-based language learning (PBLL) with sports-specific content to address the identified gaps.

Abstract

In popular media, women are often portrayed in antagonistic rivalries, reinforcing the narrative that female relationships are inherently competitive. This research explores how Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE, a docu-series documenting the journey of female contestants vying for a spot in a global K-pop girl group, challenges and complicates that narrative by presenting a more nuanced interplay of rivalry and solidarity. While existing scholarship on the Korean Wave (Hallyu) and K-pop has addressed gendered representations and the structural dynamics of the entertainment industry, limited attention has been given to how documentary storytelling mediates these gendered tensions. To address this gap, this study investigates how documentary film can shape, reflect, and potentially disrupt dominant gender ideologies. Employing feminist film analysis, documentary narratology, and close analysis of cinematic techniques, the study demonstrates how Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE constructs a cinematic language of sisterhood that both navigates and subverts the masculine logic of survival shows. Importantly, the study also engages with the cultural and linguistic dimensions of K-pop’s transnational reach, emphasizing how language, performance, and cross-cultural communication inform representations of identity and gender. This intersection of media, language, and culture offers critical insights into the global resonance of female solidarity in contemporary popular culture.
