Abstract

Abstrak Fly swatter game adalah kegiatan yang menarik bagi siswa karena mereka dapat belajar sambil bermain. Dalam permainan ini, siswa merasa tertantang untuk mencari atau menemukan kata-kata yang telah tersedia. Dalam permainan ini, siswa akan dibagi menjadi dua kelompok dan setiap kelompok mendapatkan sebuah pemukul lalat. Sebelum permainan dimulai, guru menuliskan beberapa kata di papan tulis. Setelah itu, guru memperlihatkan beberapa gambar kemudian mengucapkan kata dalam Bahasa Inggris, serta memperdengarkan suara berdasarkan kata-kata yang tersedia. Tugas siswa adalah menemukan kata-kata yang ada di papan tulis berdasarkan instruksi guru. Jika siswa menemukan kata yang dimaksud, siswa harus memukul kata tersebut dengan alat pemukul yang telah diberikan, mengucapkannya dalam Bahasa Inggris dan mengejanya. Poin akan diberikan kepada kelompok yang cepat dan benar dalam menemukan kata. Jadi, dengan adanya permainan ini kelas akan lebih menyenangkan dan membuat siswa lebih tertarik untuk mengikuti pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di sekolah. Abstract

Speaking is one of the ways to communicate that is mostly used by people to interact with others. However, some people feel anxious to speak in English. This research was conducted to find out the factor and the level of speaking anxiety experienced by Tourism and Hospitality students of SMKN 6 Padang. The subject of this research was 59 students from grade 12th of tourism and hospitality department. The data was collected by using quantitative descriptive method. The research instruments were questionnaire and interview. There were two questionnaires used such as FLCAS and FLSAS questionnaire. Each questionnaire consists of 33 statements. Based on the data analysis, it was found the dominant factors of students’ speaking anxiety was fear of speaking test. On the other hand, the level of students’ speaking anxiety from two questionnaires were in medium level with percentage from FLCAS was 75%, and from FLSAS questionnaire was 71%. It can be concluded that students felt anxious because of some causes such as mispronunciation, afraid of making mistakes, lack of vocabulary, and think that friend is better than themselves.

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk membahas bagaimana pengajaran speaking dengan menggunakan strategi jazz chants. Pelaksanaan pembelajaran menggunakan strategi jazz chants ini harus melalui dua tahapan utama. Pertama adalah tahap persiapan. Dalam tahap ini guru mempersiapkan segala materi dan topik yang sesuai dengan tingkatan siswa kemudian mempersiapkan pertanyaan-pertanyaan untuk menuntun siswa mengembangkan ide-ide dalam berbicara.  Tahap kedua adalah prosedur mengajar. Tahap ini terdiri dari tiga proses yaitu; pre-teaching, whilst-teaching dan post-teaching. Dalam pre-teaching, guru melakukan kegiatan warming up yang dapat mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan siswa tentang topik yang akan dajarkan. Whilst-teaching dibagi menjadi tiga bagian: (1) eksplorasi; (2) elaborasi dan; (3) konfirmasi. Guru akan menggunakan strategi jazz chants pada bagian eksplorasi dan siswa disuruh mengaplikasikan strategi ini pada bagian elaborasi. Pada proses post-teaching guru menyimpulkan materi yang telah diajarkan dan menutup pelajaran. Kata Kunci: jazz chants, teaching speaking, Junior High School students

Abstract

Abstrak Pengajaran berbicara bertujuan untuk melatih siswa agar mampu berkomunikasi secara lisan dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan lancar dan benar. Namun kenyataan dilapangan masih banyak siswa mengalami kesulitan berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris. Hal tersebut disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor seperti: kurangnya kosakata yang dimiliki siswa, kurangnya wawasan siswa,siswa dan siswa lebih cenderung menggunakan bahasa ibu mereka dalam berbicara. Untuk mengurangi kesulitan siswa dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, makalah ini membahas salah satu strategi yang dapat digunakan dalam mengajar keterampilan berbicara yaitu Ridicule strategy. Pada makalah ini penulis mengambil topik mendeskripsikan orang. Dalam penerapan strategi ini siswa diperlihatkan sebuah gambar yang lucu dan menggelikan yang mengandung humor. Kemudian mereka di suruh untuk menggambarkan hal-hal yang lucu dari gambar tersebut dibantu oleh guru dengan menyediakan kosa kata yang digunakan untuk menggambarkan seseorang. Setelah itu, siswa dibagi dalam empat grup, masing-masing grup memilih salah satu gambar artis yang mereka anggap lucu dan menarik untuk digambarkan di depan kelas. Dengan menerapkan strategi ini, diharapkan siswa tidak takut untuk berbicara karena suasana pengajaran di dalam kelas akan penuh dengan humor dan tidak terlalu serius Dengan demikian, Riciule strategy diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi yang lebih baik dalam pengajaran berbicara teks descriptive bagi siswa di SMA. Abstract

This research aimed to describe students difficulties in presenting spoken exposition text, limited to the use of simple present tense. This research was a descriptive research, conducted in May-June 2017 at MAN 2 Padang. The population was Grade XI of Science program students of MAN 2 Padang. The sample was 38 students chosen by using stratified random sampling method. The research data was the clauses with grammatical mistakes found in the transcript of students speaking, obtained by a speaking test. The result of the research showed that the most frequent difficulties of verbal clauses using simple present tense were subject-verb agreement (51%) and the use of auxiliary verb (18%). The most frequent difficulties of nominal clauses using simple present tense were no verb (71%) and no subject (13%).

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students‟ speaking ability in role playong “Dialogues of guests handling” viewed from grammatical and lexical features. The design of this research is descriptive research. The populations of this research are the eleventh year of Administrasi Perkantoran students of SMKN 3 Padang. The sample of this research is get by using cluster sampling where the researcher chooses one class, that is XI AP 2 class. Data of this research are students‟ speaking ability in role playing dialogues of guests handling. The data are taken by giving speaking test in which the students are required to role play dialogues of guests handling. The result ot students‟ speaking ability viewed from grammatical features is 71,56 which classified into very good. The result ot students‟ speaking ability viewed from lexical features is 79,01 which classified into very good.

Abstract

Makalah ini ditujukan untuk membantu guru dalam merancang dan memilih simple conversation sebagai materi ajar speaking bagi anak kelas 5 SD. Materi ajar simple conversation dalam makalah ini dikembangkan dari kompetensi dasar yang tertera dalam kurikulum tingkat satuan pendidikan (KTSP) mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris SD (2006). Menurut KTSP, materi ajar speaking bagi anak kelas 5 SD harus sangat sederhana dan konstektual sebatas lingkungan sekolah. Materi juga disesuaikan dengan tingkat perkembangan kognitif dan sosial/emosional anak. Oleh karena itu simple conversation yang diajukan dalam makalah ini dirancang sangat sederhana; dengan bahasa yang jelas, kontekstual dan kultural. Abstract

The Sims with their realistic animation, complex scenarios and impressive interactivity, computer simulation games might be able to provide context-rich, cognitively engaging virtual environments for language learning. However, simulation games designed for second language learners are in short supply. As an alternative, could games designed for the massmarket be enhanced with support materials to allow students to enter and make use of them for learning? This classroom-based investigation looked into whether the best selling game “The SIMS” could be rendered pedagogically beneficial to young learners by means of supplementary materials designed to meet criteria for second language learning. The mixed-technique study will significant improvements in vocabulary knowledge, as well as a generally positive reaction to the modifications among users and will better to use this technique for young learners.

Abstract

Many students have difficulties in writing discussion text, such as difficult to deliver contrasting ideas in one topic, no interest in the topic and inappropriate strategy or media when doing teaching and learning process. Considering such problems, an appropriate teaching technique is needed to help students improve their ability in writing discussion text. This paper is aimed at explaining how to use small group discussion in writing discussion text. Small group discussion is conducted by making several groups of students consist of six. In implementing small group discussion, the teacher shows the news to the students to stimulate them to give their arguments about the issue presented. Then, the teacher shows the discussion text related to the news given. Next, the teacher gives the students different topics for each group to be discussed. After finishing the discussion, the students write their own discussion text in the group. Finally, the students who are the representatives of each group present their discussion text in front of the class. The objective of this paper is to help the students to stimulate their critical thinking so that they can deliver their opinions in writing a discussion text.Key words: Writing, Discussion Text, Small Group Discussion

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk menjelaskan penerapan RIDER strategi guna memotivasi siswa dan meningkatkan kemampuan mendengar siswa dalam belajar mendengarkan teks descriptive pada satuan pendidikan Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). RIDER (Read or listen, Image, Describe, Evaluate and Repeat) strategi merupakan salah satu strategi alternatif yang bisa digunakan oleh guru dalam meningkatkan keterampilan mendegarkan teks descriptive. Strategi ini terdiri dari beberapa langkah. Pertama, Read or Listen, yakni siswa mendengarkan teks descriptive tersebut. Kedua Image, yakni para siswa membayangkan apa yang sudah didengarnya. Ketiga, Describe, siswa menuangkan apa yang sudah dibayangkannya pada langkah sebelumnya dalam bentuk kata kata dan gambar. Keempat, Evaluate, siswa mengevaluasi apa yang telah dibuatnya dan juga didengarnya. Kelima, Repeat, siswa melakukan pengulangan kembali, dimulai dari langkah awal hingga langkah keempat. Dengan demikian, RIDER strategy diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi yang lebih baik dalam pengajaran mendengarkan teks descriptive bagi siswa di SMP.Key words: RIDER strategy, teks descriptive
