Abstract

This article is written to explain a teaching medium along with the selecting of the teaching writing a descriptive text material for junior high school students through using multimedia storyboard. Multimedia is a combination of some media like video/audio, animation, hyperlink, sound effect, and selected pictures related to the teaching topic. A storyboard here is a slide in power point presentations’ where the teacher can place those media in the slide. Thus, multimedia storyboard is a place for presenting the teaching material more interesting and effectively. In this article, the material is about teaching writing a descriptive text for the first grade of junior high school students in the second semester. The topic is to describe people. The teacher starts the lesson with showing a short video related to the topic of describing people to the students. Then, the teacher review about descriptive text itself and explain about the steps in describing someone. There are three points that have to be explained by the teacher related to the material of describing someone. They are about people’s physical features, their physical appearances, and their characters. The teacher explains those three parts together with the kinds of task given to the students. It can be done by grouping them or creating such a game. The strength of this media is to help the students in developing their ideas in writing a descriptive text through the series of pictures including the video/audio, text, animations, sound effect and hyperlink that are displayed from multimedia storyboard. Abstrak Artikel bertujuan memaparkan suatu media pembelajaran dan pemilihan materi pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif  bahasa Inggris di sekolah menengah pertama dengan menggunakan multimedia storyboard. Multimedia merupakan penggabungan beberapa medium seperti video/audio, animasi,efek suara,  hyperlink, dan gambar-gambar pilihan sesuai dengan topik pembelajaran. Sedangkan storyboard di sini adalah slide yang ada pada tampilan Powerpoint sehingga guru dapat menempatkan beberapa media tersebut di dalamnya. Dalam artikel ini, materi yang dipilih adalah pembelajaran  monolog teks deskriptif untuk kelas tujuh semester dua. Tema yang dipilih adalah mendeskripsikan seseorang. Guru mengawali pembelajaran dengan menayangkan video sesuai dengan topik yang akan diajarkan. Setelah itu guru membahas tentang teks deskriptif dan menerangkan langkah-langkah dalam mendeskripsikan seseorang. Ada tiga hal pokok yang merupakan bagian dari mendeskripsikan seseorang yaitu; bentuk fisik, penampilan dan sifat. Guru menerangkan ke tiga hal tersebut disertai dengan penyediaan beberapa tugas yang dapat diberikan secara berkelompok atau melalui penciptaan permainan (game). Keunggulan dari media ini adalah siswa dibantu untuk mengembangkan ide-idenya dalam menulis teks deskriptif melalui serangkaian gambar yang ditambahkan dengan video/audio, teks, animasi, efek suara, dan hyperlink yang ditayangkan melaui multimedia storyboard.

Abstract

An article under the title “Writing Attitude of the Second Grade Students at SMA Adabiah Padang” is aimed to describe students’ writing attitude. The research was done at SMA Adabiah Padang. There were 48 students that became the sample of this research. They were students of XI IPA 1 and students of XI IPS 4 at SMA Adabiah Padang. They were chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was questionnaire that consists of 20 statements. The Questionnaire was adapted from Kear et al. (2000). Students’ writing attitude was analysed using tripartite theory—affective, behaviour, and cognitive. The result shows that the second grade students of SMA Adabiah Padang have positive attitude toward writing.

Abstract

Grammar is an essential language component that should be concerned to create a good writing, no exception to the use of adjective clause. However, there are still some problems identified in the adjective clause construction. The purpose of the research is to figure out students’ ability in constructing adjective clause. The design used in this research is descriptive research with second year students of English Language Education Program of UNP as the research population.  There were 31 students taken as the research sample selected by using stratified sampling technique out of 162 students. The data were collected through document analysis and Hortatory Exposition essays were chosen as the source of the data. The essays were analyzed by two raters and the score was classified based on score classification. Then, the problems were identified from the students’ adjective clause construction in the essays. The result of the study showed that the students’ ability in constructing adjective clause is categorized into excellent with the average percentage 87. 94%. The common problem found in the students’ adjective clause construction is in sentence element which has total 37.04% problems identified. Students tend to disregard the element of the sentence, such as subject and verb.

Abstract

AbstrakMakalah ini bertujuan untuk membahas mengenai bagaimana mengimplementasikan penggunaan ”Mini Musical Drama” dalam peningkatan motivasi dan kemampuan siswa dalam berkomunikasi. Penulis memaparkan langkah penggunaan teknik ini sebagai salah satu kegiatan yang digunakan dalam pengajaran berbicara, meningkatkan minat dan kepercayaan diri siswa dalam pengajaran berbicara. Namun juga memberikan mereka motivasi untuk lebih intensif lagi dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Teknik ini bertujuan untuk pengajaran berbicara, siswa dituntut untuk melatih kemampuan mereka dalam berbicara agar mereka menyerupai native speaker. Penulis berharap makalah ini dapat bermanfaat sehingga guru Bahasa Inggris dapat berkreasi sendiri dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara.Key words: speaking performance, improvement of speaking, mini musical drama.

Abstract

Teaching vocabulary to Elemntary school students is not easy, because their have difficulties to mastery new words well. Futhemore, teachers have to prepare the good and interesting ways to improve students’ attraction and also their memorizing to learn vocabulary. This paper will discuss how teacher teach new vocbulary to Elemantary school students in class does. One way the teacher can use is using Pelmanism game. Pelmanism game is a gmae to improve students’ memorizing to remembering words, because this game using card that consists of picture and words. Vocabullary cards is prepared have to appropiate to picture carrds. Then, the way of using this game is very easy, the teacher just prepare pictue cards and vocabulary card that can get from the internet and can get them cut depends on the shape of picture. Take them in a sterofoam in front of class in roder all of the students in class can see that clearly. This game is strated by teacher explanation about the meaning card that had prepare and students will try to remember and also match the cards appropriate to vocabulary card for many times so, the students can remember the words easier.

Abstract

Abstract This article discusses about some strategies  of  teaching speaking to the  low vision students. The suggested teaching strategies conform to the principles of  teaching and learning  to the students. The three principles that  must be understood by the teachers especially the English teacher are concrete experiences, unification concepts and  learning by doing. These teaching strategies  aim  to obtain the content instruction, language development and to encourage active envolvement in learning process. It is expected that by using these strategies can achieve the graduate competency standard of  speaking skill as stated in the role of education and culture Minister No 23/2006 and 2006 curriculum.   Key words :    Low vision, strategy, competency standard.

Abstract

This research was a descriptive qualitative research that aimed to analyze students’ reading motivation level and students’ types of motivation in English subject at junior high school. The population of this research were 8th grade students of SMP N 11 and SMP N 46 Sijunjung. The sample of this research were 78 students that was selected by using purposive sample. The instruments of study were Motivation for Reading in English Questionnaire (MREQ) by Komiyama (2013) and open-ended interview. The items were scored based on the students’ response to the questionnaire.The total score items became the result of students’ reading motivation (level).The type of students’ reading motivation was came from the score total from items 1 to 16 (intrinsic) and 17-46 (extrinsic).The researcher defined the students’ type of motivation by summing up the score of each type of motivation. The result of this research showed that (1) Students’ reading motivation level in reading English subject of SMP N 11 Sijunjung and SMP N 46 Sijunjung were dominated by the average level of motivation. (2) Students’ types of reading motivation in English subject of SMP N 11 Sijunjung and SMP N 46 Sijunjung was extrinsic motivation.

Abstract

Abstrak Pengajaran menulis narrative text untuk siswa menengah pertama bukanlah hal yang mudah karena siswa sering kali mengalami kesulitan dalam mengekspresikan ide dan kurangnya motivasi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan dalam keterampilan menulis. Comic creator adalah salah satu aplikasi website yang dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam pengajaran menulis narrative teks. Pada aplikasi ini siswa dapat membuat cerita sendiri karena comic creator telah menyediakan karakter-karakter, latar-latar, tulisan-tulisan, dan sebagainya untuk mempermudah siswa dalam membuat dan merancang cerita yang mereka inginkan. Langkah-langkah dalam pengajaran menulis dengan comic creator yaitu preparation, pre-teaching, whilst-teaching dan post-teaching. Pada preparation guru mempersiapkan materi, media ajar dan rancangan pelaksanaan pembelajaran yang akan digunakan. Pada pre-teaching guru mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan murid dengan memperlihatkan video atau gambar yang sesuai dengan materi yang akan diajarkan. Pada whilst-teaching guru menerangkan lebih lanjut tentang narrative teks dan bagaimana langkah-langkah dalam menulis cerita yang baik melalui comic creator pada situs Bitstrips tersebut. Pada post-teaching guru menyimpulkan pelajaran dan memberikan tugas kepada siswa untuk memantapkan materi pembelajaran.   Kata kunci: Narrative text, Comic creator, Bitstrips.

Abstract

Abstrak Salah satu tujuan dari Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP 2006) mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris adalah siswa mampu menulis. Dengan demikian,  siswa memiliki kemampuan untuk menulis teks monolog sesuai dengan tuntutan kurikulum. Siswa banyak mengalami masalah pada saat menulis. Mereka merasa tidak mempunyai ide tentang topik yang diberikan, mereka kesulitan dalam mengembangkan ide tersebut dan mereka tidak bisa mengelompokan ide tersebut secara benar, khususnya pada menulis teks deskriptif. Berdasarkan masalah diatas, dalam makalah ini memaparkan salah satu solusi yaitu teknik pengajaran writing di Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP)  dengan menggunakan Clustering Technique. Clustering Technique adalah teknik yang mengelompokkan ide dari yang umum menjadi yang lebih spesifik dan lebih terarah. Teknik ini dapat digunakan untuk membantu siswa dalam mencurahkan ide – ide yang mereka punya, mengembangkan ide yang mereka punya tersebut dan dapat mengelompokan ide – ide tersebut secara benar. Teknik ini menggambarkan dan mengelompokkan ide secara terinci sehingga siswa mudah dalam menulis. Teknik ini dapat bermanfaat bagi guru dalam peningkatan motivasi anak-anak dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris khususnya dalam menulis dan hal ini dapat memberikan dampak positif dalam proses belajar mengajar. Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) mendeskripsikan penyimpangan – penyimpangan grammar yang terdapat pada hasil terjemahan bahasa Indonesia kedalam bahasa Inggris mahasiswa tahun keempat yang terdaftar pada kelas translation tahun ajaran 2012/2013 di Jurusan Bahasa dan sastra Inggris UNP, (2) mendeskripsikan bagaimana kemampuan mahasiswa bahasa Inggris dalam menerjemahkan bahasa Indonesia kedalam bahasa Inggris dilihat dari penyimpangan grammar. Data dari penelitian ini adalah hasil terjemahan mahasiswa jurusan bahasa Inggris dari bahasa Indonesia kedalam bahasa Inggris. Sample penelitian ini adalah 27 orang mahasiswa yang terdaftar pada kelas translation di semester 7 tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes translation yang berjumlah 2 teks tentang pendidikan dan bahasa. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat penyimpangan grammar, mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris dalam menerjemahkan teks bahasa Indonesia kedalam bahasa Inggris sebagai berikut 16,96 % pada tipe omission, 5,16 % pada tipe addition, 21,97 % pada tipe misformation dan 55,89 % pada tipe misordering. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan menerjemah mahasiswa dilihat dari penyimpangan grammar berada pada level sedang.   Key words: Deviation, Grammar, Grammatical Deviations, Indonesian – English Translation.
