Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain the implementation or the use of R.A.F.T (Role, Audience, Format, Topic) strategy to motivate students to write in junior high school. Through this paper, it is expected to give the advantage thing to the teachers in teaching students to write. In addition, by using R.A.F.T (Role, Audience, Format, Topic), it is hoped that this strategy can be an alternative way to increase the ability of students of junior high school in writing. This strategy can increase the students’ attention and motivation during classroom writing activities. Besides, the students become easily to share their ideas in order to write functional texts. Then, it can encourage the students’ motivation in writing and make their group work useful for them in learning English. After that, the teachers have the opportunity to teach of English, especially in writing, more delightful. Abstrak Tujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk menjelaskan mengenai penerapan strategi R.A.F.T (Role, Audience, Format, Topic) guna memotivasi siswa dalam menulis pada satuan pendidikan Sekolah Menengah Pertama(SMP). Melalui makalah ini diharapkan akan memberikan hal yang bermanfaat bagi para guru dalam mengajarkan siswa untuk menulis. Selanjutnya, dengan menggunakan strategi  R.A.F.T (Role, Audience, Format, Topic) ini diharapkan mampu menjadi alternatif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Strategi ini mampu meningkatkan perhatian dan motivasi siswa selama kegiatan menulis berlansung. Siswa juga mudah untuk berbagi ide saat menulis Functional Text. Selanjutnya, strategi ini mampu meningkatkan motivasi menulis siswa dan membuat kerja kelompok mereka bermanfaat dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Kemudian guru juga berkesempatan untuk mengajarkan bahasa Inggris, terutama menulis, dengan lebih menyenangkan.

Abstract

Among the four language skills, listening is one of the language skills that must be mastered and is important to be taught by a teacher to students in learning English. In line with the importance of listening, a teacher must be creative to make listening learning more enjoyable. One of them is by applying interesting and appropriate technique and media in listening learning. So, students are interested and motivated to learn it. In this paper, the author discusses how to improve student listening comprehension through the LyricsTraining.com online site. This website uses music video as a more interesting learning tool to practice English language skills, especially Listening. LyricsTraining provides authentic, complete, new and interesting listening learning materials from various types of music videos on YouTube. In addition to students, the teacher can also make his own material by creating an account on the Lyricstraining.com site. Through writing this paper the authors hope to introduce listening learning media that can motivate students and apply English in their daily lives.

Abstract

This study is aimed to examine the written subject and verb agreement errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Al Istiqamah Simpang Ampek, West Pasaman when they were writing a recount text. Error analysis technique was carried out in this research in order to find the proportion of each type of error made by students. The research is a descriptive study with 30 students participating in the study. The instrument used is writing test about recount text. All subject verb agreement errors that appear in students writing are analyzed using Surface Strategy Taxonomy introduced by Dulay et.al. The findings showed that (1) the students constributed the three types of errors in term of subject verb agreement in their recount writing, those were (a) omission (45 error / 26%), (b) addition (10 error/ 6%), (c) misformation (118 error / 68 %), then there was no error in misordering found in this study. (2) The sources of the errors are inter-lingual transfer (45/ 26%) and intra-lingual transfer (128/ 74%). The research reveals that the students are still having difficulties in using correct patterns of subject and verb agreement in their writing.

AbstrakTujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk menjelaskan mengenai penerapan teknik What’s Missing Games guna memotivasi siswa dalam menguasai kosakata baru pada satuan pendidikan Sekolah Dasar (SD). Melalui makalah ini diharapkan akan memberikan hal yang bermanfaat bagi para guru dalam mengajarkan siswa dalam menguasai kosakata. Selanjutnya, dengan menggunakan teknik What’s Missing Games ini diharapkan mampu menjadi alternatif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan penguasaan kosakata siswa Sekolah Dasar (SD). Teknik ini mampu meningkatkan perhatian dan motivasi siswa selama kegiatan belajar-mengajar berlansung. Selanjutnya, teknik ini mampu meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan cara bekerja didalam kelompok. Abstract

This research is a descriptive research which is intended to reveal the cultural aspects and how cultural contents are presented in reading passages. The data in this research was obtained from the English textbooks entitled Bahasa Inggris for Senior High School grade X-XII written based on curriculum 2013 by Kemendikbud RI. This research employed the descriptive approach with the instrument was the cultural content checklist. After conducting the research, the cultural aspects found in the reading passages were religion and religious rituals; history and politics; foods and drinks; ecology; economy; leisure time, music, and arts; dressing; science and literature; social behaviour, and etiquette; family and male-female relationship; naming systems; geographical names; cultural products; and tribe. Based on the data in this research, it was revealed that Indonesian cultural contents were dominantly used in the reading passages. Furthermore, the presentation of cultural contents was found in forms of monologues, dialogues, and pictures. Since Indonesian cultural contents dominated the reading passages, the evaluation towards these three textbooks needs to be conducted. The cultural contents of the target culture need to be added into the reading passages.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Perangkat lunak komputer merupakan salah satu pilihan yang dapat digunakan dalam membuat suatu media pengajaran. Guru dapat menuangkan dan mengaplikasikan ide-ide baru dalam membuat media yang akan meningkatkan motivasi dan ketertarikan siswa dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya dalam berbicara. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk membantu guru dalam pembuatan media dengan menggunakan “Microsoft PowerPoint” sebagai media pembelajaran, yang berguna untuk melatih siswa secara audio dan visual. Microsoft PowerPoint adalah sebuah perangkat lunak berbasis Windows, yang merupakan sebuah perangkat lunak yang bisa digunakan untuk menciptakan media yang menarik berbentuk multimedia, dan dapat diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran berbicara. Dengan menggunakan Microsoft PowerPoint, guru dapat membentuk media yang terdiri dari slide gambar, video, atau bahkan audio menjadi sebuah media yang sangat menarik, yang dapat mendukung pengajaran berbicara. Dalam makalah ini, terdapat proses dan contoh dari pembuatan media pembelajaran menggunakan Microsoft PowerPoint yang dapat diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran berbicara bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Many students got low score in Semantic and Pragmatic course. They complained that the textbook used in the course is difficult to understand. It is possible to consider that there is a correlation between the students’ bad scores and the readability of the textbook. In previous research, it was found that suitable level of readability and reading skills are important consideration to reach maximum learning gain. Because of that, it becomes important to measure readability level, the factors which influencing readability level and the best way to use the textbook. This research was a descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research was 3 pages from 3 chapters of the textbook, chapter 9, 10, and 11 chosen randomly from each chapter. The instruments were a written questionnaire, an online readability measurement website, and notes during interview. The findings show that the readability level measured by students and readability formula was difficult. The most influencing factors in determining readability level were interest and vocabulary difficulty. The best way to use the textbook was using one single textbook, editting by put some notes on the page, then presenting it in a lecture form by the lecturer.

Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini membahas penggunaan newscast activity dalam pengajaran menulis teks news item dalam bahasa inggris pada satuan pendidikan Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA). Pada newscast activity, siswa bekerja dalam kelompok. Sebelum menulis teks berita, siswa terlebih dahulu mendengarkan rekaman berita dan membaca artikel berita yang diperlukan siswa untuk menulis teks berita mereka sendiri. Kegiatan ini berlanjut hingga mereka menulis teks dan membaca teks berita tersebut di depan kelas. Makalah ini diharapkan memberikan hal yang bermanfaat bagi para guru dalam mengajarkan siswa untuk menulis. Selanjutnya, newscast activity ini diharapkan mampu menjadi salah satu variasi pembelajaran menulis di kelas. Keunggulan kegiatan ini adalah mengintegrasikan beberapa keterampilan bahasa; mendengar, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis. Kegiatan ini juga membantu siswa meningkatkan pengetahuan tentang variasi bahasa lisan dan tulisan. Key words: keterampilan menulis, a newscast activity, teks news item.

Abstract

AbstrakKeterampilan menulis dirasakan sulit bagi sebagian siswa dikarenakan menulis menuntut siswa untuk mengeluarkan ide-ide terkait dengan topik yang akan mereka kembangkan. Selain itu, siswa dituntut untuk mengikuti aturan penulisan yang benar secara gramatikal dalam menuangkan ide-ide mereka ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Dan sebagai konsekuensinya siswa pun tidak termotivasi dalam menulis. Walaupun sebagian dari siswa mampu menulis, namun mereka kurang percaya diri terhadap tulisan mereka sendiri. Untuk itu ada satu strategi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis dan membuat siswa lebih termotivasi serta lebih percaya diri terhadap tulisan sendiri, yaitu melalui COPS Strategy. COPS Strategy adalah prosedur pengajaran yang dirancang untuk mengajarkan siswa dalam aturan penulis yang benar yaitu fokus terhadap komponen mekanik yaitu C (Capitalization), O (Organization), P (Punctuation), and S (Spelling). COPS ini merupakan proses editing dan evaluating terhadap tulisan siswa. Strategi ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan rasa percaya diri siswa terhadap tulisannya khususnya siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama. Dengan begitu siswa pun akan lebih menyenangi keterampilan menulis serta lebih termotivasi.Kata kunci: keterampilan menulis, COPS strategy, siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the reading ability of the fifth semester students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2017/2018 in reading an expository text. This research was a descriptive research. The data collected through a reading comprehension test.  There were five indicators tested; identifying topics, finding the main idea, identifying supporting details, making inference and identifying writers’ purpose. The result shows that students' ability in identifying the topics is good, (the mean score is 71.48), students' ability in finding the main idea is good enough, (the mean score is 65.70), the ability of students in identifying supporting detail is good enough, (the mean score is 68.65), student ability in making inference is enough (the mean score is 59.36) and student ability in identifying writers’ purpose is good enough (the mean score is 68.75). Thus, the results of this research indicated the students’ reading ability of the fifth semester students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2017/2018 is good enough, where the total mean of students’ score is 66.72. Key words: Reading comprehension, students’ reading ability, expository text.
