Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify moves and steps in the Literature Review and Findings / Discussion chapter of four Master’s Degree theses namely JA, LY, ML, and MM. In analyzing the moves and steps in the Literature Review (LR) and Discussion in this research, the researchers used two kinds of framework namely Kwan (2006) framework and Yang Allison (2003) framework. Kwan framework was used to analyze the moves and steps in the Literature Review, while Yang Alison’s framework was used to analyze moves and steps in the Discussion chapter. It was found that the most frequently used in the LR was Move 1 (Establishing one of the territory of one’s own research), Strategy A (surveying the non-research-related phenomena or knowledge claims) included definition or explanations of terminology, constructs and theories. The authors of four Master Degree’s theses used Move 1 to present the theories and definition of terms. Then, in the Findings/Discussions, the most frequently used is Move 2 (Reporting Result). The authors used Move 2 in presenting the results of their study (research).

Abstract

This research aimed to explain the defense of oral interactions in the presence of information and communication technologies such as WhatsApp (WA) as well as to explore some of the positive contributions of WA used in building the Real Life Communication especially in the learning environment. By applying the Exploratory design, this research involved 4 participants from various educational backgrounds as a purposively selected data source indicated as WA users at once. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussion, Interview, and Observation and analyzed by several stages i.e. data reduction, displaying data, categorizing, and verifying and concluding. The results showed that oral interactions can decrease both in the language community and learning environment as the dominant use of WA that is not wise. Nevertheless, the use of WA applications also had some positive contributions in building a real relationship. Finally, the assumption that the negative impact of using the WA application should be able to change the mindset and positive attitude of the scholars in initiating and defending an oral interaction in the learning environment.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to investigate the improvement of students’ reading achievement by applying one of cooperative learning techniques namely STAD technique at class XI IA 1 of SMAN 7 Kendari. The target of this study is 70% of total students at class XI IA 1 who are expected to get 65 (based on standard of minimum score of the school). The design of this study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) that involves four stages, namely: 1) planning, 2) action, 3) observation, 4) reflection. This study is conducted in two cycles because the target has been achieved successfully in which each cycle consists of three meetings. The research data are collected by 1) test, 2) observation sheets, and 3) field note. Based on the data in pre-observation, there were problems in students reading achievement 1) students could not find out specific information of narrative text, 2) they found difficulty to identify main idea of the text, 3) they could not determine the generic structure of narrative text correctly, (4) they did not know the meaning of the text well because they sometimes found unfamiliar words. The result of this study shows that STAD technique as cooperative learning model can improve the students’ reading achievement at class XI IA 1 of SMA Negeri 7 Kendari in academic year 2010/2011. It is reflected from the improvement of students’ score of reading test in every cycle, in which, at the first cycle, the total number of students who can get the score of ≥ 65 is 18 students or 56.3% of 32 students, with the mean score is 62.2. Moreover, after conducting the first cycle, two problems that identified in the preliminary research can be treated well in which students can find detail information from reading text and they can determine the generic structure of the narrative text. Nevertheless, the target of students’ reading achievement has not achieved yet and there are some problems that have not been treated well. Thus, this study is continued to the second cycle, where in the second cycle, the weaknesses and constraints in the first cycle are solved effectively. It can be indicated by the students’ reading improvement, in which students can get main idea of the reading text and they know how to guess the unfamiliar word. Besides, students help each other, interact, discuss with the teacher and their classmates, contribute scores for teams, give respect to others, and become independent and good students. Therefore, in the end of the second cycle, the target achievement of this study is achieved, where there are 84.4 % or 27 students of 32 students at class XI IA 1 get the score ≥ 65.  In brief, STAD technique is an effective technique that can improve students’ reading achievement at class XI IA 1 of SMA Negeri 7 Kendari.

Abstract

The increasing number of ICT integration into language classrooms has made many teachers conducted research to examine its effectiveness. Studies have shown that Edmodo is an effective tool for students to improve their writing skills. However, very few studies investigate the use of Edmodo as a media for digital portfolio and explore its impact in EFL writing classes. This research was done primarily aimed to describe EFL learners’ perceptions of the implementation of Edmodo-based digital portfolio in a Paragraph-based Writing course. Fifteen students participated in the study that lasted for seven meetings. Data were analyzed qualitatively and collected by using questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Findings revealed that the students responded positively to the use of Edmodo-based digital portfolio in the writing course. Furthermore, they also reported that digital portfolio helps them improving their writing fluency and increasing self-reflection. This study recommends the use of Edmodo as a platform for an online portfolio in the writing class.
