Abstract

Textbook-based instruction fails to address students' actual needs, and the lack of a clear learning sequence highlights the need for a structured syllabus. This study develops an Arabic syllabus to improve instruction at Pesantren Mahasiswa X using a research and development approach.  The methods of data collection used were interviews, focus group discussion, and questionnaire with key stakeholders, including students, alumni, teachers, the principal, and the foundation. Thematic analysis of the needs analysis revealed that: 1) instruction aims to develop simple communication skills and subsequently, comprehension of Islamic texts; 2) learning levels require clear specification; and 3) instruction should initially focus on listening and speaking skills to address immediate needs. The study produced a competency-based syllabus aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) for beginner level. The syllabus includes a program description, objectives, assessments, topics, learning outcomes, linguistic competencies, activities, indicators, and learning media. This article also discusses CEFR alignment and challenges encountered in syllabus implementation. Keywords - Arabic syllabus design, competency-based syllabus, CEFR, need analysis

Abstract

The phenomenon of split-intransitivity divides intransitive verbs into two types, namely unergative and unaccusative which differ in syntactic structure and semantic role. As a complex language and rich in morphological systems, Arabic does not explicitly distinguish between the two verbs. So this research is conducted to find out the split ditransitive especially unergative verbs and unaccusative verbs found in Arabic. This research is a qualitative research. Data in the form of sentences that use unergative and unaccusative verbs in Arabic, collected through documentation studies from the third edition of the book Arabic Verbs and Essential Grammar and related scientific journals, then analyzed using the agih method with direct element division and form change techniques. The result of the research is that unergative verbs (al-af‘āl al-lāzimah) in Arabic include various categories, namely character verbs, instinct verbs, behavior verbs, color verbs, physical and emotional state verbs, and verbs with fa’ula patterns. While unaccusative verbs (al-af‘āl al-muṭāwa‘ah) include various patterns such as the transition of object to subject without any change in verb form, passive construction and morphosyntactic affixation process. Keywords – Arabic, Split Intransitivity, Unaccusative, Unergative

Abstract

The development of the era from time to time has a significant impact on the world economic sector. This is also experienced by Indonesia and China. In recent decades, the two countries have established harmonious diplomatic relations, one of which is international cooperation in the economic sector. The results of this cooperation have caused many foreign workers from China to come to Indonesia. Due to cultural differences, this often creates challenges in understanding and adapting, therefore culture shock always accompanies workers from China, causing communication barriers that lead to misunderstandings. The purpose of this study is to identify and find solutions to culture shock that occurs in Chinese workers. This study is a qualitative study with a focus on an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of the problems that occur, discussing existing problems in more depth. From the results of the study, it was found that to overcome culture shock, foreign workers from China and Indonesia must learn to understand and adapt to each other, in this case Mandarin has an important role not only in bridging the process of cultural adaptation between foreign workers from China and local Indonesian workers but also as a means of understanding values and norms, overcoming differences in cultural backgrounds and strengthening relations between the two parties. Keywords – China, Culture, Culture Shock, Indonesia.

Abstract

Early Childhood Education plays a crucial role in shaping gender awareness from an early age. This study aims to analyze how the social environment in PAUD contributes to children's understanding of gender based on Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. A literature review method was used to examine relevant studies. The findings indicate that each ecological system microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem contributes to shaping children’s gender perception. The microsystem, including family and school, directly influences how children understand gender roles, while the mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem establish norms and policies affecting gender education in PAUD. This study also identifies challenges in implementing gender-based education, such as bias in teaching materials, lack of teacher training, and cultural and social norms. Therefore, a comprehensive strategy is needed through gender integration in the curriculum, teacher capacity building, and active parental involvement in supporting inclusive gender education. Keywords - Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory, Early Childhood Education, Gender Awareness, Inclusive Education.

Abstract

This paper examines the representation of orang utan species on the official website of a national park. The study aims to explore how orang utans--an endemic species of Indonesia--are represented on web pages accessible to public, particularly those who are interested in visiting Taman Nasional Tanjung Puting (TNTP, or Tanjung Puting National Park in English) in Kalimantan. Employing a multimodal social semiotic framework, the research analyzes a dataset comprising 11 photographs of orang utans featured on TNTP’s official website. A case study method is employed, utilizing Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1996, 2006, 2020) visual grammar framework to examine three strands of meaning: representational, interactional, and compositional. Data were collected by selecting relevant photographs within the site’s gallery followed by analyzing the selected photographs through the lens of visual grammar to reveal the constructed meanings. Findings indicate that TNTP strategically presents a positive representation of orang utans through curated imagery on its official site. TNTP intends to portray orang utans as the central part of TNTP’s conservation agenda and they live in a state of freedom and autonomy strongly protected by TNTP. This representation highlights that orang utans are an important part of the ecosystem whose existence needs to be preserved, respected and protected, not a mere tourist attraction. Keywords - National Park, Orang utan, Social Semiotics, Visual Grammar, Wildlife.
