Abstract

Limitations in electricity access and reliability remains a critical challenge for small islands and remote areas in Indonesia, constraining socio-economic development and sustainable tourism growth. This community engagement program aimed to design and implement a solar shelter system to support renewable energy utilization in Gili Iyang Island, Sumenep, widely recognized as an “oxygen island” and emerging health tourism destination. The program adopted a participatory approach involving local youth organizations (Karang Taruna) and the Kelompok Sadar Wisata (Pokdarwis) through needs assessment, system design, installation, testing, and technical training. The implemented off-grid photovoltaic system consists of a 100 Wp solar panel, a 24 V 20 A solar charge controller, a 12 V 50 Ah VRLA battery, and a 1000 W pure sine wave inverter supplying 220 V AC loads. Field testing demonstrated that the system reliably powered an automatic coconut irrigation pump and multiple electronic charging devices under typical operating conditions. Beyond technical performance, the program enhanced local capacity in basic solar energy operation and maintenance while strengthening the island’s image as a sustainable ecotourism destination. The initiative directly contributes to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and supports long-term renewable energy adoption in small island contexts.

Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (K3) is an important effort to prevent workplace accidents and maintain the physical and mental health of workers to increase productivity. One of the risks that often occurs in the workplace is musculoskeletal disorders due to unergonomic lifting activities. K3 physiotherapy plays a promotive and preventive role through ergonomic education, improving work posture, and training in correct lifting techniques. This community service activity aims to increase workers' knowledge of correct lifting techniques through the application of the diagonal lift method. The methods used include education using posters, practical demonstrations, and discussion sessions for five ceiling shop workers in Sidorame, Barengkrajan, Krian District, Sidoarjo Regency. Evaluation was carried out through pre-tests and post-tests to determine the level of knowledge of the participants. The pre-test results showed that most participants still had low knowledge regarding correct lifting techniques. After being provided with education, the post-test results showed a significant increase in knowledge, where all participants were able to answer questions correctly. In addition, practical observations showed improvements in work posture such as keeping the back neutral, bending the knees when lifting, and bringing the load closer to the body so that it is safer for the musculoskeletal system.

Abstract

The internal road access at Ainul Hayah Islamic Boarding School in Deli Serdang remains unpaved, leading to slippery and muddy conditions during the rainy season and increasing safety risks for students and the surrounding community. Limited financial resources also constrain the implementation of conventional pavement solutions. This community service program aims to improve road quality through participatory training in the production and installation of paving blocks. The method employed a participatory and applicative approach, including preliminary surveys, hands-on training in manual paving block production, laboratory testing of compressive strength at 28 days, and field implementation of paving installation. The results show that participants were able to independently produce and install paving blocks, with compressive strength values generally ranging from quality D to approaching quality C based on SNI 03-0691-1996 standards. The installed pavement significantly improved road conditions, making them more stable, less muddy, and safer for daily use. In addition, the program enhanced participants’ technical skills, knowledge, and confidence, contributing to the community’s self-reliance in simple infrastructure development. This study demonstrates that participatory training combined with appropriate technology can effectively address infrastructure problems while empowering local communities, and it has strong potential for replication in similar educational and residential settings.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance active family involvement in the Community Research (Litmas) process as an effort to support the guidance of correctional clients at the Class I Correctional Center (Bapas) of Palu. The identified problem is that the role of families in the Litmas process remains limited, as families tend to function merely as formal guarantors and administrative data providers rather than active partners in the client guidance process. This activity was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach based on community service, employing in-depth interviews with Community Supervisors and clients' families, as well as direct orientation sessions delivered to families during the Litmas process, in line with the mandate of Law Number 22 of 2022 on Corrections, which stipulates that correctional guidance shall be implemented through accompaniment, counseling, and supervision to prepare clients for social reintegration. The results indicate that family involvement in the Litmas process has not yet been running optimally, as not all guarantors are core family members who deeply understand the client's condition, supervision remains weak due to distance and time constraints, and no standardized mechanism exists for sustained family involvement beyond the Litmas schedule. Through the orientation sessions, families demonstrated improved understanding of their active role as guidance partners, and Community Supervisors confirmed that active family involvement positively impacts client behavioral change. This activity recommends strengthening intensive and sustainable family-based approaches by Community Supervisors to improve guidance effectiveness and correctional clients' social reintegration.
