Abstract

Learning to write poetry in elementary schools plays an important role in fostering creativity, empathy, and appreciation for literature. However, many students face difficulties due to limited imagination, word choice challenges, and low motivation. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of poetry writing instruction using a website-based medium with Canva in terms of process, outcomes, and students’ learning motivation among fourth-grade students in Sumedang Utara District. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with instruments including a teaching module, observation sheets, tests, and questionnaires, analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The findings reveal that the learning process was carried out very effectively with an observation score of 91, student learning outcomes were classified as high with an average score of 71.0 and a z-score of -2.10 within the interval –2.33 < z < 2.33, and learning motivation was also high with an average score of 82.81. Abstract

This work analyzes how idioms in The Truman Show influence the psychological response of audience. The analysis uses Boatner & Gates semantics theory in order to provide the theoretical background regarding idioms while using Leon Festinger's theory of Cognitive Dissonance to draw the psychological connection. Although there are many studies on semantics and psychological dissonance, there has yet to be a study that connects semantics and psychological response through the Truman Show. Using a descriptive qualitative method, 25 idioms were identified from the movie script: Lexemic idioms (44%), Phrase idioms (24%), Frozen idioms (24%), and Proverbs (8%). The dominance of Lexemic idioms requires audiences to interpret both literal and figurative meanings which evokes their psychological engagement. Keywords: Idioms, Cognitive dissonance, Semantics

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms, functions, and typological characteristics of interrogative constructions in the Toba Batak language. The analysis employs a syntactic typology and functional construction approach, focusing on structural, morphological, and pragmatic strategies used by native speakers in daily communication. The data were collected through documentation and in-depth interviews with native speakers from the Samosir and Toba regions. The analysis was conducted using intralingual and distributional methods based on the theoretical framework of Sudaryanto (2015) and Payne (2006). The findings reveal that interrogative constructions in Toba Batak can be categorized into three main types: yes–no questions, partial questions, and rhetorical questions. Interrogative markers include particles such as ma, do, and na, as well as rising intonation patterns at the end of sentences. Additionally, word order inversion often occurs in partial interrogatives. Functionally, Toba Batak interrogatives are not limited to seeking information but also serve pragmatic purposes such as expressing requests, irony, or emotional emphasis. This research contributes to the linguistic documentation of local languages and provides valuable insight into Austronesian typology, especially in the grammatical description of regional languages in Indonesia. Keywords: Toba Batak language, interrogative sentences, linguistic typology, questionparticles, syntactic structure

Abstract

D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951) remains one of the most discussed novels in modern American literature. This study analyzes key symbols in J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye using Saussurean semiotics and connects them to teenage identity in the digital era. Each symbol’s meaning changes depending on Holden Caulfield’s emotions and situations, reflecting Saussure’s view that meaning is relational and context-dependent. Qualitative textual analysis is used to examine how the relationship between signifier and signified shifts across symbols such as the red hunting hat, the ducks in the lagoon, the Museum of Natural History, and the carousel. The findings reveal that Holden’s search for authenticity in a “phony” world mirrors how modern teenagers construct and negotiate their identities through digital signs like social media profiles and online expressions. This study fills a gap in previous scholarship by linking classical semiotics with contemporary youth culture by showing how meaning-making in both literature and digital life depends on interpretation, difference, and social context. Keywords: Saussurean semiotics, The Catcher in the Rye, teenage identity, digital era, symbolism.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of locutionary, illocutionary, perlocutionary, and implicature speech acts in the "Readers' Letter" section of the Solopos Daily Newspaper. Data collection used non-participant observation with note-taking techniques. Data analysis employed referential, distributional, introspective-reflexive, and abductive inference techniques. The results of the discussion indicate that metaphors in the readers' letters contain pragmatic functions such as assertive, directive, and expressive. The pragmatic functions found indicate the indirectness of intent in metaphorical expressions. This indirectness of intent indicates a politeness strategy used by the readers' letters writers to maintain a good relationship with the readers. The readers' letters writers give the readers the freedom to agree or disagree with the discourse presented. Keywords: locutionary speech acts, illocutionary, perlocutionary, implicature

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the English language needs of Information Technology (IT) students from both linguistic and pedagogical perspectives. The research seeks to identify the students’ specific language requirements and the implications for curriculum design in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from 80 students of the Information Systems and Technology Program at ITB Semarang through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. The findings revealed that reading and writing are the most essential skills for IT students, especially in understanding technical documentation and producing project reports. Students also expressed a strong need for vocabulary enrichment, authentic materials, and digital-based communication practices. The pedagogical implications suggest that ESP instruction should integrate task-based and project-oriented learning, align materials with professional contexts, and emphasize communicative competence in technology-related discourse. Abstract

The development of digital technology and global mobility has created new opportunities for the Indonesian language to play a role as a language of international communication. Through the phenomena of migration and the development of social media, Indonesian is not only used by native speakers but is also beginning to be learned and utilized by the global community. This study aims to analyze the potential of Indonesian as a global language, emphasizing migration trends and digital connectivity in 2025. The methods applied are literature review and content analysis of Indonesian-language digital media reaching international audiences. The results indicate that Indonesian is appealing due to its expressive, communicative nature and its ability to adapt to technology, particularly on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and language learning applications. However, challenges remain, such as the mastery of foreign languages, the lack of internationalization policies for the language, and limited support for local language technology. This study proposes strategies for the conservation and development of Indonesian through cultural diplomacy, strengthening language technology, and integration into global curricula. With effective strategies, Indonesian has the opportunity to become one of the important global languages in the age of digital connectivity. Abstract

This study looks at the lyrics of Bruno Major’s Nothing using Ferdinand de Saussure’s view. The study uses a text-based approach. The study finds three pairs, in the lyrics – intimacy vs. Distance certainty vs. Uncertainty and simplicity vs. Complexity. The opposite pairs shape the structure of the song. The meaning in the lyrics does not come from words. The meaning in the lyrics comes from the contrasts, between signs. The result matches Saussure’s idea that language works through differences. I think the study looks at a gap, in research that rarely uses a Saussurean structural analysis, on a single song. I think the study adds to the growth of using structuralism in the study of music texts. Researchers have examined music texts often with a semiotic approach. In practical terms, the findings of this study can serve as a reference for future studies that seek to examine the meaning of lyrics through oppositional structures, while also emphasizing that songs can be understood as complex sign systems, rather than merely emotional expressions. Overall, this research demonstrates that Nothing conveys emotional depth not through explicit narrative but through subtle oppositional tensions, affirming the relevance of binary oppositions as a tool for understanding meaning in contemporary song lyrics. Keywords: Binary oppositions, song lyrics analysis, meaning.

Abstract

Thesis writing is one of the essential stages in completing undergraduate studies, including for students of the Sharia Economics Department. However, many students face linguistic challenges that affect the clarity and quality of the scientific work produced. This research seeks to uncover and examine the linguistic challenges present in the theses written by Sharia Economics students at the Parahikma Indonesia Institute. The method used is descriptive qualitative, employing documentation techniques on 21 thesis manuscripts as the sample. The findings indicate that errors in diction, sentence structure, paragraph coherence, and idea organization are the main challenges. These results highlight the need for more intensive and contextual academic writing training that aligns with the terminology used in sharia economics. Keywords: language, thesis, sharia economics, academic writing, students
