Abstract

This study aims to analyse the English language needs of Information Technology (IT) students from both linguistic and pedagogical perspectives. The research seeks to identify the students’ specific language requirements and the implications for curriculum design in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from 80 students of the Information Systems and Technology Program at ITB Semarang through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. The findings revealed that reading and writing are the most essential skills for IT students, especially in understanding technical documentation and producing project reports. Students also expressed a strong need for vocabulary enrichment, authentic materials, and digital-based communication practices. The pedagogical implications suggest that ESP instruction should integrate task-based and project-oriented learning, align materials with professional contexts, and emphasize communicative competence in technology-related discourse. Abstract

The development of digital technology and global mobility has created new opportunities for the Indonesian language to play a role as a language of international communication. Through the phenomena of migration and the development of social media, Indonesian is not only used by native speakers but is also beginning to be learned and utilized by the global community. This study aims to analyze the potential of Indonesian as a global language, emphasizing migration trends and digital connectivity in 2025. The methods applied are literature review and content analysis of Indonesian-language digital media reaching international audiences. The results indicate that Indonesian is appealing due to its expressive, communicative nature and its ability to adapt to technology, particularly on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and language learning applications. However, challenges remain, such as the mastery of foreign languages, the lack of internationalization policies for the language, and limited support for local language technology. This study proposes strategies for the conservation and development of Indonesian through cultural diplomacy, strengthening language technology, and integration into global curricula. With effective strategies, Indonesian has the opportunity to become one of the important global languages in the age of digital connectivity. Abstract

This study looks at the lyrics of Bruno Major’s Nothing using Ferdinand de Saussure’s view. The study uses a text-based approach. The study finds three pairs, in the lyrics – intimacy vs. Distance certainty vs. Uncertainty and simplicity vs. Complexity. The opposite pairs shape the structure of the song. The meaning in the lyrics does not come from words. The meaning in the lyrics comes from the contrasts, between signs. The result matches Saussure’s idea that language works through differences. I think the study looks at a gap, in research that rarely uses a Saussurean structural analysis, on a single song. I think the study adds to the growth of using structuralism in the study of music texts. Researchers have examined music texts often with a semiotic approach. In practical terms, the findings of this study can serve as a reference for future studies that seek to examine the meaning of lyrics through oppositional structures, while also emphasizing that songs can be understood as complex sign systems, rather than merely emotional expressions. Overall, this research demonstrates that Nothing conveys emotional depth not through explicit narrative but through subtle oppositional tensions, affirming the relevance of binary oppositions as a tool for understanding meaning in contemporary song lyrics. Abstract

Thesis writing is one of the essential stages in completing undergraduate studies, including for students of the Sharia Economics Department. However, many students face linguistic challenges that affect the clarity and quality of the scientific work produced. This research seeks to uncover and examine the linguistic challenges present in the theses written by Sharia Economics students at the Parahikma Indonesia Institute. The method used is descriptive qualitative, employing documentation techniques on 21 thesis manuscripts as the sample. The findings indicate that errors in diction, sentence structure, paragraph coherence, and idea organization are the main challenges. These results highlight the need for more intensive and contextual academic writing training that aligns with the terminology used in sharia economics. Abstract

This study analyzes the symbolic meaning of the colors pink, blue, and green that appeared in digital demonstrations in Indonesia in 2025 using Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotics approach. This approach views signs as a combination of three main elements: representamen (signs), objects (what is signified), and interpretants (the meanings produced). The research method uses qualitative analysis of posts and comments on social media that contain these color symbols. The results show that these colors not only function as visual elements, but also convey social, emotional, and ideological messages that develop dynamically according to the social and political context. Pink symbolizes women's courage, green symbolizes solidarity and justice for workers, while blue represents national consciousness and resistance. The combination of these three colors unites the meanings of courage, solidarity, and resistance as symbols of the people's struggle that lives on in Indonesia's culture of digital protest. This study provides a new perspective on the use of color as a dynamic and contextual medium of political communication in the digital age. Keyword: Semiotic, Digital Protest , Resistance

Abstract

Religious tolerance is the main thing in realizing harmony between people in the life of Indonesian society which consists of various religions and cultures. Abdurrahman Wahid is a figure who provides a role model for special communities in Indonesia regarding harmony, diversity, and religious tolerance. The focus of this research is to describe the actualization of religious tolerance of Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur in implementing multicultural values in Indonesia. This research is a type of qualitative research, using a narrative approach, with data validation using theoretical triangulation, the research data is interviews, data analysis techniques using interactive analysis (Milles Huberman) which include: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results of this study indicate that Abdurrahman Wahid seeks to provide an example for religious people to uphold multicultural values in people's lives in Indonesia. This is done with mutual respect and respect for each religious believer as a form of tolerance in an effort to create inter-religious harmony. The application of Abdurrahman Wahid's multicultural values in the lives of Indonesian people plays an important role in creating national unity and integrity. Not only upholding religious tolerance which is the essence of diversity, Abdurrahman Wahid also fights for the rights of religious minorities. This is done because minority religions have the same rights as the majority religions in carrying out their worship and carrying out their life activities, so Abdurrahman Wahid's goal is not to discriminate against minority religions. The application of multicultural values carried out by Abdurrahman Wahid in realizing religious harmony can actually be carried out by every religious community in social life, because Abdurrahman Wahid's sacrifice and struggle in upholding tolerance is a role model that can be emulated by every religious believer. The results of this study have implications for the life of the Indonesian people as a reflection of a harmonious life that respects differences. Not only that, the results of this study can also be used as role models for real life in people's lives who apply religious tolerance. Keywords: religion, tolerance, multicultural

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the short story City of a Thousand Interpretations by Mulla Shandri using Webb Keane's social semiotic framework. The research employs qualitative descriptive methods with semiotic analysis approach. Research data consists of linguistic units containing semiotic signs in the short story. Results indicate: (1) iconicity is represented through symbolic objects such as the silver peacock, olive wood gate, and ancient manuscript representing plurality values and meaning ambiguity; (2) indexicality appears in causal relationships between the ancient manuscript and Sofyan's dimensional transfer, and cracks in the peacock as index of diversity value degradation; (3) semiotic ideology presents conflict between "thousand interpretations" versus "single interpretation" paradigms, representing dialectics between pluralism and monism in meaning-making; (4) representational economy shows how words and material objects interact to form value systems in the narrative. The conclusion is that "Kota Seribu Tafsir" contains semiotic complexity transcending conventional dichotomies between meaning and matter, as argued by Webb Keane in his theory of social semiotics of material things.
