Abstract

One of the informal efforts to foster historical awareness is establishing an action-oriented platform that presents historical data tangibly and physically accessibly. This study aims to analyze the strategies of Mlaku Magelang in constructing local historical narratives relevant to the characteristics of Generation Z integrated through the modern elements of walking tours and to uncover the internalizations of local historical values. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design, with data gathered through observation and interviews. David Kolb’s Experiential Learning theory was utilized as the analytical framework. The findings indicate that Mlaku Magelang successfully implemented an adaptive and contextual communication approach tailored to Generation Z's lifestyle by selecting engaging routes and providing tokens of appreciation to participants. Furthermore, the activity leveraged modern elements, including visual aids, historical documents, visual aesthetics, and thematic dress codes worn by storytellers. Through the direct experience of traversing urban spaces, Generation Z participants responded positively, as evidenced by high levels of interaction and the publication of their activities on Instagram. Theoretically, this research contributes to enhancing public historical literacy; practically, it serves as a conceptual reference for digital history pedagogy that blends urban physical activity with social media activism. Ultimately, this study contributes to bridging the intergenerational historical communication gap, preventing identity crises, and strengthening the nation's collective memory in the future.

Abstract

Chronological thinking skills are an important foundation in historical thinking skills because they help students understand the relationships between historical events in a coherent, logical, and meaningful manner. However, the results of a needs analysis at SMAN 2 Klaten indicate that students still experience difficulties understanding the sequence of events in the material "Efforts to Maintain Indonesian Independence." In addition, the learning media used are still dominated by textual materials, while students want more interactive, visual media that align with the development of digital technology. The purpose of this study is to develop Augmented Reality-based History Card learning media to strengthen students' chronological thinking skills in the material Efforts to Maintain Indonesian Independence. The study used the Research and Development (R&D) method, with the Borg and Gall model comprising 10 development stages. The resulting product is a history card integrated with an Android-based Augmented Reality application that includes AR-scanning features, visualisation of historical events, location maps, learning materials, and evaluation quizzes. Based on the validation results, the material experts assigned a feasibility score of 88% to the developed media, 92.8% to media experts, and 90% to history teachers. All assessment results were classified as very feasible. The media's feasibility rate was 82.3% in a small-group trial with six students and 81% in a large-group trial with 30 students. The media's effectiveness was tested through pretests and posttests, which demonstrated an increase in student performance after using the developed learning media. These findings indicate that the developed media meets the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness, making it suitable for use in strengthening students' chronological thinking skills in history learning.

Abstract

The integration of local history into history learning is essential for strengthening students’ historical awareness and cultural identity. However, the availability of digital teaching materials that incorporate local wisdom within the Merdeka Curriculum remains limited. This study aimed to develop an Islamic Aboge-based e-module as a local history learning resource for tenth-grade students at MAN Purbalingga. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation involving subject matter experts, media experts, history teachers, and students. The feasibility of the developed e-module was analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques. The findings indicate that the developed e-module achieved a very high level of feasibility. Material expert validation obtained an average score of 4.72 (94%), media expert validation obtained 4.64 (92.8%), and teacher validation obtained 4.60 (92%). Small-group and large-group trials also demonstrated positive student responses, with feasibility percentages of 88% and 87%, respectively. These findings suggest that the developed e-module is suitable for supporting contextual local history learning and can be utilized as an alternative digital teaching material in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the Dutch colonial presence in the Parlilitan District between 1877 and 1907, examining its impact on the socio-cultural dynamics of the local community. Historical records indicate that Dutch colonialism in the Batak region—particularly in Parlilitan—was not only exploitative but also constituted a form of systemic violence and a violation of human rights. Employing qualitative research methods, including interviews and literature review, this study reveals that the Dutch regime engaged in coercive and oppressive practices that instilled fear among the local population. These included threats, forced labor (rodi), and the destruction of community assets such as rice field huts. Direct resistance was rare, as the colonial forces possessed superior weaponry and physical strength. Instead, the local population resorted to passive forms of resistance, such as fleeing into forests or migrating to safer regions. The colonial period significantly altered the community’s socio-cultural fabric, resulting in a collective sense of inferiority, the erosion of customary legal authority, transformations in labor patterns, and increased mobility due to the construction of transportation infrastructure.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the struggle of the Indo Europeesch Verbond (IEV) in fighting for the existence, independence, and social recognition of Indo-Europeans in the Dutch East Indies. Indo-Europeans, as a group of European and indigenous descendants, were in an ambiguous social position—rejected by the Dutch and not fully accepted by the indigenous community. In the context of strong colonial discrimination, IEV emerged as an organization that voiced the interests of Indos through political and socio-economic channels. This study uses a qualitative method with a historical approach, through literature study, archival analysis, and interviews with descendants of IEV colonists in Giesting, Lampung. The results show that IEV played an important role in the Volksraad as an effort to fight for political rights and civil equality. In addition, the IEV colonization program in Giesting from 1926–1942 was a concrete step in establishing an independent and economically productive Indo community. However, the Japanese occupation in 1942 abruptly halted this project. This research concludes that IEV serves not only as an advocacy organization but also as a symbol of resistance against the marginalization of identity. This historical legacy demonstrates the importance of recognizing minority groups in the formation of an inclusive and multicultural nation.

Abstract

During the dutch colonial era, coffee was not just a commodity, but also a tool of power and the mainstay of the dutch east indies economy. The java region, especially the Malang Afdeling, played an important role in coffee production since the implementation of the forced cultivation system (Cultuurstelsel) in 1830. This research began with curiousity about how the role of Afdeling Malang, with all its geographical and social potential, contributed to the colonial economy for more than a century. The aims of this study is to trace the role of Afdeling Malang in the colonial coffee production and distribution network, particularly in the economic sector. as well as to see its impact on local communities at al time. The method used in this research is a historical research method from literature studies as the main technique for collecting data sources. The data sources analyzed include books, research journals, colonial archives, dutch east indies goverment document, and plantation report. From the research result, it was found that the Malang Afdeling played an important role and many local people were involved as coffee plantation workers under the strict control of the ducth goverment and businessmen. The contribution of the Malang Afdeling to the dutch east indies economy was enormous, but it was built on a structure that was unfair to the local population.

Abstract

Lamongan Regency is an area that often experiences flooding and drought, which affects crop failure. This condition caught the attention of the colonial government, which at that time was implementing an ethical policy. The Lamongan area affected by irrigation development and improvement was the Bengawan Solo river basin. The Bengawan Solo basin is prone to flooding due to rainwater overflow and often experiences drought during the dry season. To address these problems, the colonial government needed to build irrigation facilities in the form of reservoirs and drainage systems through the Sollo-vallei irrigation project. The Sollo-vallei irrigation project was a water supply system development project aimed at providing water for agriculture and community needs. The Sollo-vallei irrigation project was halted because it required a large amount of money from the colonial government. However, during the construction process in several areas of Lamongan, not everything went well because the water coverage in the limestone area was very low. The existence of the Sollo-vallei irrigation system certainly had an impact on the social and economic life of the Lamongan community, especially on the agriculture of the communities through which the Sollo-vallei irrigation system passed. Even so, the Sollo-vallei irrigation project was not entirely able to overcome flooding due to overflowing water discharge and drought during the dry season. These problems still occur in the Lamongan region, resulting in cases of starvation and poverty due to crop failures. This paper uses historical research methods with several stages, including: topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, historiography, as well as geographical, economic, and social approaches. Thus, this paper shows that during the Dutch colonial period, the Lamongan region experienced development and improvement in irrigation facilities, which aimed to maintain water availability during the dry season, mitigate flooding, and overcome agricultural problems.

Abstract

The resurgence of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) and its emergence as the fourth-largest party in the first general election of 1955 was founded upon a massive and strategic effort. This achievement is particularly notable considering the party’s failure in the 1948 Madiun rebellion, which severely tarnished its reputation and rendered its leaders fugitives. Although the party was not officially disbanded, rebuilding it from such a compromised position was a formidable challenge. This study employs a historical method to analyze the strategies utilized by Dipa Nusantara Aidit in revitalizing the PKI and enabling its active participation in Indonesian politics. The methodological stages include: (1) topic determination; (2) heuristics, involving the collection of relevant data and information; (3) source verification or criticism to assess the validity, authenticity, and credibility of the collected sources; (4) interpretation through analysis and synthesis of data; and (5) historiography, which entails the writing of a historical narrative based on the discovered facts. Under the revolutionary programs led by Dipa Nusantara Aidit as General Secretary, the PKI consolidated its foundation in the 1955 election by securing 39 seats in parliament and 80 seats in the Constituent Assembly. The strategies implemented encompassed party reorganization, the formation of a national front, empowerment of peasants, active support of the government, expansion of educational initiatives, and fostering close relations with President Soekarno and the Indonesian National Party (PNI).

Abstract

History learning at the MA and SMA levels is still dominated by conventional methods that are centered on teachers, making students less active, uninterested, and tend to just memorize the material. In fact, history learning should encourage students to think critically, understand the historical context, and reflect on past values in today's life. Based on this, this study aims to determine the reasons for the need for a student-centered history learning model to be implemented in MA and SMA in Madiun City, how it is implemented, and what its influence and impact are on students. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The subjects of the study included history teachers, students, and principals at several MA and SMA in Madiun City. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that a student-centered history learning model needs to be implemented because the conventional approach is no longer relevant to the demands of the Merdeka Curriculum and the needs of 21st century learning. The implementation of this model is carried out through various active strategies such as group discussions, projects, and problem-based learning, with teachers as facilitators. The impact is that students become more motivated, active, and able to think critically and reflectively. This approach also improves cooperation, communication, and deeper understanding of historical materials. However, its implementation still faces obstacles in the form of limited time, teacher readiness, and supporting facilities.
