Abstract

There have been many studies about humor, especially verbal humor. Most of them were related to the areas of, for example situation comedy, movie, song and so on where humor can easily be found because it is the main focus of those areas. However, there were no prior studies which explore the verbal humor in the areas where its main focus is not to produce funny remarks. Therefore, the researcher attempted to find the exitence of verbal humor in such area, particularly in preaching where the main focus is to deliver religous teachings, but the existence of humor is also there. The object of this research was the preaching of Ustadz Abdul Somad. The general therory of verbal humor (GTVH) proposed by Attardo and Raskin (1991) was employed in order to analyse the humor creation process of each types of verbal humor. The results showed that Ustadz Abdul Somad produced a significant number of verbal humor, in terms of types, numbers and knowledge recources. Ustadz Abdul Somad produced 9 out 12 types of verbal humor.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the development of speech disfluency of Zayn Malik, ex-One Direction member, regarding his anxiety disorder issue since 2015 – 2017. The types of this research was descriptive qualitative through longitudinal analysis. Data for this research were 281 utterances from trancriptions of Zayn Malik’s speech based on ten videos taken from Youtube since 2015 until 2017. The result showed that there were 1369 types of speech disfluency. Silent pause and filled pause gave huge contribution to disrupt Zayn Malik’s speech. The most common types and the highest types of speech disfluency produced by Zayn Malik was filled pause that was 627 types or 72%. Surprisingly, Zayn Malik developed more silent pause than filled pause since the last of 2016 until the middle of 2017, and he no longer produced types of stuttering like prolongation or block since the middle of 2016. It proved that Zayn Malik is indeed a non-stuttered speaker. In relation to anxiety and speech disfluency, Zayn Malik were more anxious to speak in front of many audiences or with men interviewers because his speech disfluency increased; while it decreased when he talked to woman interviewer or a machine by seeing the result that he produced more silent pause during the interview. Hence, the best way to overcome stuttering for anxiety sufferer is by producing more silent pause during speech in order to create a good speaking performance.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to describe the types of taboo words and types and functions of swearwords used by men and women of Suku Anak Dalam, the differences of swearwords used by men and women. The type of this research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data were the taboo words and swearwords used by the informants. The informants were (men and women) of Suku Anak Dalam. The data were collected by using interview method with stimulation technique. It is found there are five types of taboo words used by men. Meanwhile, there two types of taboo words used by women. It is also found there are six types of swearwords used by men. They are swearwords from sex organs, minor (animals and diseases), mother type, body function, scatology and religious. Meanwhile, swearwords used by women are only three. They are sex organ, minor (animal) and religious. Swearwords have various functions in Suku Anak Dalam.  For men, there are three functions of swearwords, expletive, abusive, and humoristic. Meanwhile, for women there are two functions of swearwords, abusive and expletive. In short, men have more various types of taboo words and swearwords than women. Men mostly use the type of sex organs for the taboo words and swearwords, ruder and impolite than women’s. While, women have fewer types of taboo words and swearwords. Men use swearwords to abuse and mostly to express anger. Meanwhile women use abusive function to express anger and disappointment.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of brutality in novel Human Acts (2014) by Han Kang. It is also intended to find out how the implied author contributes in revealing the issue of brutality. This analysis is related to concept of Power Relation by Michel Foucault that is supported by the text and context-based interpretation. The result of the analysis shows that the brutality that is committed by military government in maintaining their domination done through two strategies: enforcing regulations and utilizing state apparatus.

Abstract

The research aimed to find the types of language style and the frequency of the style used by facebook users in Indonesia. The source of data in this research is facebook users in Indonesia. This research focused on language style used by facebook users from the teenager to pre adult users in Indonesia. The writer used descriptive method which is describing the phenomenon based on the source of data. This research analyzed the status of the facebook users to find the types of language style and the most frequency style used by facebook users in Indonesia. On the analysis, the writer found that there are four language styles namely formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Then, casual style is the mostly language style used by the speakers with percentage is about 70%. Furthermore, the writer found that the causes of casual is the mostly used by facebook users

Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the language that dominantly used rather than other languages in Indonesian movies titles 2016. Clearly, it intended to see the used of English, the forms of language hegemony of English and the tendency of title characteristics in Indonesian movies titles 2016. The method used in this research was descriptive. The data of this research were the words, phrases or clauses as the titles of Indonesian movies in 2016. In other word, the research data consisted of 131 titles. From the 131 titles, it was found 80 data of forms of langauge hegemony of English. Based on the research finding, the dominant language used in Indonesian movies titles 2016 is Indonesian language that was about 76 titles (58%). Moreover, it also showed that there were four forms of language hegemony of English found in Indonesian movies titles 2016. It also can be an evidence of the existence of language hegemony of English in Indonesian movies titles. The four forms were code switching, code mixing, borrowing word and language interference. Meanwhile, the most frequent characteristics of the Indonesian movies titles were concise and accurate which means that Indonesian movies titles 2016 contained the story of the movies obviously.

Abstract

Language is the oldest tool of communication which already exists from the first time humans were created. The use of language, at first and with the simplest form, is the form of nonverbal, which is language of symbol, sign, body language, face expression, and gesture forms. However, the study of language as a field of linguistics is the language in the form of words, or can be called as academic language. But, even academic language also has errors in their written conversation. Even less, these errors are done by the academic people itself. Based on the analysis of the data, it can be seen that there are 6 types of conversations occur in WhatsApp Group Chats “SASING UNP” and has 24% of error from total data that analysed was 118 utterances. However, another result of this research proved the hypothesis of researcher, which the dominant conversation happened, was used both verbal and nonverbal.

Abstract

Language is a media of communication that has an important role in human life. The background of this research because of interesting issues in terms of figurative languages that contained in Online Padang Ekspres Newspaper. The use of these figurative languages sometimes makes the reader difficult to know the meaning of the sentence, because the form of figurative languages cannot be known the meaning literally. This paper aims to identify the type and meaning of figurative language used by the author in Online Padang Ekspres Newspaper in March until May 2016 editions. The paper focuses on the types of figurative language in Opinion Column of Online Padang Ekspres Newspaper, because the writer finds many sentences in form of figurative language in that column. The writer collected data by downloading opinion column of online Padang Ekspres Newspaper. In analyzing the data, the writer groups the data into specific types based on the theory Keraf (2009). Then the writer translated it in English and discussed based on the theory. From the results of this study found as many as 100 words / phrases that categorized into figurative languages. From 100 data, found metaphor as many as 66, 25 phrase belongs to simile, and 9 pieces personification. From these results we conclude that the style of the dominant language used in newspapers Padang Express Online is metaphor and most dominant meaning is positive meaning.

Abstract

Euphemism is one of language phenomena that exists in society in order to keep the relationship in good harmony. This research aims to describe forms and functions of euphemism that are found in Celebrity News published in people.com website. This research is descriptive qualitative based on phenomena of euphemism in written language. Data of this research are words, phrases and sentences that contain euphemistic expression found in Celebrity News during February 2017.The result of the research shows that there are four forms and four functions of euphemism. The form of euphemism that is mostly found is semantic change, especially metaphorical transfer. The researcher also found various functions of euphemism. The function of euphemism that is mostly found is avoiding taboo.

Abstract

This study analyzed the differences and the similarities between metaphors found in political news in The Jakarta Post and The New York Times online. Kovecses (2010) theory about conceptual metaphor is used to analyze the data. The concept of metaphor is elaborated into source domain and target domain. The type of this research is qualitative descriptive. After analyzing 40 political news in The Jakarta Post and The New York Times, it was found that there are 61 metaphors in the The New York Times and 16 metaphors in The Jakarta Post. The result of this study shows that politics is the most dominant type of target domain in the metaphors found in both newspapers. However, the most dominant type of source domain is different. In The New York Times, it is found that the most dominant type of source domain is movement and direction. Meanwhile in The Jakarta Post, the most dominant type of source domain is machines and tools. The differences occur because the writers of both NYT and TJP have different cultural background and writing style.
