Abstract

The child’s playful speech style is not merely an individual form of expression, but also a communication strategy employed to build closeness and influence the interlocutor’s response. This study aims to identify the speech strategies used in playful speaking as well as the socio-emotional factors underlying the emergence of this style in the subject AFR, an eight-year-old child. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study found that AFR’s playful speech style is characterized by word reduplication, phoneme omission and substitution, rising and elongated intonation, and the use of special forms of address. Data were collected in both home and school settings trough the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap (SBLC) method, followed by note-taking, providing direct insight into the contexts of use. Furthermore, AFR’s speech strategies include bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies. The style appears predominantly in interactions with close family members and rarely in school, shaped by socio-emotional closeness and executive functions such as inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulation. These findings affirm that coquettish speech is not a spontaneous childish act but a manifestation of psycholinguistic processes rooted in cognitive mechanisms, reflecting the child’s understanding of interpersonal relations. This study contributes to child psycholinguistics by offering new perspectives on how children’s language us reflects not only structural development but also the social and emotional dynamics shaping everyday interaction.

Abstract

This study analyzes forms of injustice and resistance experienced by the female main character in the short story collection Wit Tanjung Ngiringan Omah using a feminist approach and James C. Scott's theory of resistance. Data collection involved reading and note-taking, with the reading process conducted heuristically and subsequently analyzed hermeneutically to achieve a deeper understanding. The research data consist of phrases and sentences related to forms of injustice, betrayal, and manifestations of resistance by the female protagonists, drawn from the short story collection Wit Tanjung Ngiringan Omah. The results indicate the presence of betrayal in the realms of romance, politics, economics, legitimacy, and protective functions. The female main character's resistance manifests in the form of open resistance (public transcript) and hidden resistance (hidden transcript), with hidden resistance being the most dominant form. Overall, this study demonstrates that power is not always manifested through physical rebellion but also through covert resistance.

Abstract

Poetry is one of the literary literacy materials that can develop students' interpretive, reflective, and appreciative abilities. However, the use of symbols and metaphors often makes poetry difficult to understand because its meanings are not conveyed directly. This study aims to describe and analyze the symbols and metaphors found in the poems of Sapardi Djoko Damono's Hujan Bulan Juni anthology, interpret the meanings of life represented through these symbols and metaphors, and explain their relevance as literary literacy materials for senior high school students. This study employed Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach using a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of words, phrases, lines, and stanzas containing symbols and metaphors in five poems: “Lanskap”, “Tulisan di Batu Nisan”, “Yang Fana Adalah Waktu”, “Aku Ingin”, and “Berjalan ke Barat Waktu Pagi Hari”. Data were analyzed through the stages of distanciation, appropriation, and refiguration. The findings reveal the presence of natural, temporal, color, situational, and abstract symbols, as well as the use of anthropomorphic and concrete-to-abstract metaphors. These symbols and metaphors construct meanings of life related to reflections on life's journey, acceptance of loss, awareness of the limitations of time, sincerity in giving and letting go, and the importance of making peace with oneself. The findings also indicate that the poems in Hujan Bulan Juni are relevant as literary literacy materials for senior high school students because they can foster students' interpretive, reflective, and literary appreciation skills. Based on the complexity of their symbols and metaphors, Aku Ingin and Lanskap are more suitable for Phase E, while Berjalan ke Barat Waktu Pagi Hari, Yang Fana Adalah Waktu, and Tulisan di Batu Nisan are more suitable for Phase F.

Abstract

The development of social media platforms, especially TikTok, has given rise to new linguistic phenomena that are interesting to study sociolinguistically. This study aims to describe the variety of languages and linguistic characteristics in the content of @arab_ngapak TikTok accounts. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a sociolinguistic approach, data was collected from 12 videos uploaded in March–December 2025 through the free participation listening technique (SBLC) and the recording technique. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman models. The main theoretical frameworks include Martin Joos' theory of linguistic diversity and the theory of Chaer and Agustina's language variation. The results showed three dominant language types: consultative, intimate, and casual, with the business variety being the most frequent due to the high level of promotional content. Prominent linguistic characteristics include the mixing of Arabic and Javanese codes of the Ngapak dialect as a form of hybrid identity enregistration, the use of pisuhan as a marker of group solidarity, and the simile language style. These findings contribute to understanding how content creators use a variety of languages to construct social identities in the digital space.

Abstract

In studies of contemporary Indonesian literature, Eka Kurniawan's novel Anjing Mengeong Kucing Menggonggong has primarily been examined through the lenses of internal conflict and power relations. However, few studies have positioned narrative strategy as the primary medium through which the negotiation of religious identity is represented. This study aims to examine how religious identity is represented in the novel and how narrative strategies are employed to portray resistance as part of the ongoing negotiation of identity. The analysis draws on Genette's narratology, focusing on order, duration, frequency, focalization, and is supported by Hall's theory of identity, Bell's theory of ritual, and Scott's concept of resistance. The findings show that religious practices such as prayer, Qur'an recitation, fasting, and circumcision are understood not only as acts of worship but also as practices that shape the characters' everyday lives. This subversive tendency is already suggested in the title (Dogs Bark, Cats Meow), which reverses what is commonly perceived as natural, creating space to question identities and norms that have long been accepted as fixed. The study also finds that narrative strategies play a significant role in constructing this representation through the use of temporal structure, focalization, and voice, allowing religiosity to be understood as a plural and evolving experience rather than a singular one. In the novel, resistance is not presented simply as a rejection of religious identity but as a way for the characters to reinterpret, negotiate, and reshape their religious identities through everyday experiences. Thus, the novel portrays religiosity as a dynamic space of identity negotiation that continues to evolve through the characters' lived experiences, social relationships, and personal choices.

Abstract

Javanese romance stories often portray socio-cultural issues within society, including the practice of arranged marriage. In Javanese culture, family involvement in determining a child’s spouse remains significant, particularly for women, as considerations of social status, family reputation, and economic stability frequently shape marital decisions. This phenomenon reflects the operation of family hegemony through the internalization of cultural values and social consent. This study examines the forms of family hegemony and the female character’s responses to arranged marriage in the romance story Jodho Pilihan Bapak. Using a qualitative approach, this research applies content analysis within the frameworks of sociology of literature and Gramsci’s theory of hegemony. The data consist of narrative passages and dialogues that represent family power relations and the female character’s responses. The findings reveal that family hegemony operates through moral pressure, the legitimization of social and economic values, and parental authority in determining a life partner. Although the female character initially experiences inner conflict, she gradually negotiates and eventually accepts the arranged marriage. These findings suggest that arranged marriage in Javanese romance literature functions not only as a cultural representation but also as a mechanism through which family hegemony shapes individual consent. Furthermore, the study highlights the relevance of literary texts as critical material for Javanese literature learning.
