Abstract

This study examines the representation of female demon figures in two Indonesian horror films, Pengabdi Setan (2017) and Kuntilanak (2018), from the perspectives of patriarchy, social construction, and the monstrous feminine. The study employs qualitative textual analysis by combining visual code analysis and narrative analysis on 24 purposively selected key scenes. The results show that the representation of female demons in both films is consistently built through recurring visual markers, including disheveled long hair, white or pale clothing, abnormal body posture, and their frequent appearance in domestic spaces. At the narrative level, both films position female figures within plot structures that culminate in expulsion or neutralization. Although the two films differ in the construction of backstory, Pengabdi Setan foregrounding domestic conflict and career-related causality, and Kuntilanak foregrounding maternal death under adverse social conditions, both ultimately direct the female supernatural figure toward a threatening role that must be resolved through elimination. These findings indicate that contemporary Indonesian horror continues to rely on gendered visual and narrative conventions in representing female supernatural figures. This study contributes to Indonesian popular culture and gender studies by offering an integrated comparative reading of visual and narrative patterns in two significant contemporary horror texts.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian senior high school students respond to compliments in English within an EFL context, with a focus on gender differences and sociocultural influences. Data were collected from 30 eleventh-grade students (15 males and 15 females) using a Discourse Completion Test covering four domains: appearance, ability, personality, and possessions. Responses were analyzed using Herbert’s taxonomy of compliment responses. The results show that agreement strategies overwhelmingly dominate (over 86%), with comment acceptance and appreciation tokens as the most frequent forms. Gender differences were evident but limited: female students tended to use more elaborated and interpersonal responses, while male students more often employed deflective strategies such as comment history and questioning. The use of religious expressions to reassign praise reflects the influence of local cultural values. These findings suggest that while existing frameworks remain useful, they require contextual adaptation. The study highlights the importance of integrating pragmatic competence into EFL instruction to enhance learners’ intercultural communication skills.

Abstract

The discourse on environmental preservation (hifz al-bi’ah) emerged in response to worsening environmental conditions. There is a view that hifz al-bi’ah is one dimension of the maqasid al-shari’ah (the objectives of sharia in Islam). As one of the largest mass organizations, Muhammadiyah is a highly effective platform for promoting understanding and awareness of environmental preservation. This will also affect the image of Muhammadiyah as an environmentally conscious organization. This study aims to analyze the forms of images related to environmental preservation (hifz al-bi’ah) within the Muhammadiyah. This research is categorized as an analytical-descriptive research, with the selected data collection method being the observational method using the tapping technique. The collected data were analyzed using distributional method with immediate constituent analysis (ICA) technique, and referential method with determinant element sorting (DES) technique. The data source used in this study is the Muhammadiyah.or.id website, with the data narrowed to articles written directly by the Muhammadiyah.or.id Editorial Team. The theory used is ecolinguistics as outlined by Stibbe (2015). The result is that 22 data in the form of phrases and clauses discussing environmental issues, of which 14 present the image of Muhammadiyah as an organization in beneficial metaphor and 8 in ambivalent metaphor. From these data, it is concluded that Muhammadiyah news is dominated by the organization’s environmental consciousness (beneficial), with an image of an organization that is educative, innovative, collaborative, driving, responsible, and implementative in environmental matters. In addition, Muhammadiyah also positions the environment as a places, organisms and networks.

Abstract

This article examines the construction of masculinity through two male characters, Nozias Faustin and Max Ardin Jr., in the novel Claire of the Sea Light (2013) by Edwidge Danticat, a Haitian diaspora writer. Previous studies discuss ecological concerns, postcolonial perspectives, and female characters’ resistance to patriarchy. However, the portrayal of male characters in relation to dominant norms of masculinity remains underexplored. Studies on masculinity in Haitian literature have explored colonialism, race, sexuality, and patriarchal norms, indicating a gap in the discussion of non-normative masculinity. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing how non-normative masculinity is constructed through narrative structures. The study employs close reading within Gérard Genette’s narratological framework, particularly focalization and order, as well as an intersectional masculinity framework based on class and sexuality. The study reveals two main findings. First, non-normative masculinity is negotiated differently according to class position: Nozias, a lower-class man, reconfigures fatherhood through relinquishing his child as a response to provider norms, while Max Junior, an upper-class homosexual man, adopts and performs heteronormative masculinity through sexual violence and financial support to gain patriarchal legitimacy. Second, focalization and order strategies create differences in moral accountability: the fragmented narrative with comprehensive flashbacks opens emotional and reflective space for Nozias, whereas the semi-linear narrative with limited flashbacks restricts the depiction of guilt for Max Junior. These results demonstrate that masculinity in the novel is not only socially negotiated but also structurally produced through narrative form, offering insights into gender, class, and sexuality in post-disaster Haitian contexts.

Abstract

Although Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) is widely used to evaluate multimedia learning, its application to textual language styles in printed distance learning modules remains under-explored. To address this gap, this study investigates how specific linguistic choices impact students' cognitive load within Sociolinguistics modules at Universitas Terbuka. Employing a multi-method qualitative design, the research analyzed 40 thematic textual segments and conducted semi-structured interviews with three Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students whose first language is Indonesian. The findings indicate that within this specific context, extraneous cognitive load is primarily triggered by dense academic registers, syntactic opacity, and culturally distant examples. Conversely, localized contexts and conversational markers functioned as germane load triggers. These results suggest the presence of an "expert blind spot," where markers of academic rigor paradoxically act as cognitive barriers for autonomous learners. Consequently, instructional designs in text-driven distance education should integrate culturally relevant schemas and explicit linguistic scaffolding to optimize comprehension without diluting theoretical depth.

Abstract

Literary narratives in the context of historical trauma play a role in shaping collective memory and gender resistance, especially for Chinese women during the New Order era. This study aims to analyze interpersonal relationships in emotional memory narratives as resistance by Chinese female characters in Soe Tjen Marching's novel Dari dalam Kubur. Therefore, this study is a descriptive qualitative study with a literary discourse analysis approach based on Karen Horney's feminist psychology theory (1973;1937). The main stages of analysis include the identification of gender trauma discourse, the categorization of three styles of interpersonal relationships (approaching, opposing, and distancing), the analysis of the representation of New Order mental trauma, and a study of the historical context that reflects the dynamics of patriarchal power. This model is relevant for describing literary narratives with psychological resistance strategies against historical trauma memories. The data collection method used was to document the discourse of the novel through in-depth reading and recording elements of resistance. In the data analysis stage, this study used Horney's interpersonal style analysis scheme (1973; 1937) and a trauma study approach in literature. The results of the study show that interpersonal relationships (tendencies to approach, oppose, or distance oneself) through Chinese female characters become a symbolic resistance strategy, not merely a neurotic fulfillment, but a transformation of the subaltern position into an active subject that opposes patriarchal ideology and the history of marginalized women within the collective sphere of the state and family.

Abstract

This study examines how Tempo magazine represents the ethical scandal of the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court through its October 22 and November 12, 2023 covers. Using a qualitative approach, the study integrates Peirce’s semiotics and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to analyze how meaning is constructed and ideologically framed in visual media. The findings show that Tempo consistently constructs the scandal not as an isolated personal violation, but as a broader institutional crisis. This representation is produced through the interaction of judicial iconography, metaphors of rupture and collapse, and critical lexical framing. At the micro level, semiotic analysis reveals structured relations among signs that signify weakened judicial legitimacy. At the macro level, these sign patterns function as an encoding strategy that directs audiences toward a preferred reading in which judicial authority is delegitimized and linked to political dynasty. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Tempo’s visual representation operates as a counter-hegemonic discourse that challenges the normalization of dynastic politics and highlights tensions surrounding judicial independence. By integrating semiotic and representational approaches, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how media actively constructs political meaning and participates in broader ideological struggles.

Abstract

This study examines lexical external innovation in Sundanese in Babakan District, Cirebon Regency, a linguistic border area between Sundanese and Cirebon Javanese. The research aims to (1) identify external lexical innovations, (2) analyze the factors driving them, and (3) examine their sociolinguistic impact on language use. A descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative distribution analysis was employed. Data were collected from 200 lexical items based on the GSKSKB (a combined Swadesh and cultural vocabulary list) through fieldwork with native speakers. Findings reveal that 61 lexical items (30.5%) represent external innovations, primarily from Indonesian (22%) and, to a lesser extent, from Cirebon Javanese (8.5%). These innovations occur across core lexical domains, including body parts, kinship, and basic vocabulary, indicating that even a stable lexicon is susceptible to change. Distribution patterns show varying stages of diffusion, from localized occurrences to widespread adoption. The analysis suggests that external innovation is shaped by linguistic accommodation and language prestige. Indonesian, as a high-prestige national language, is the primary source of lexical borrowing, while Cirebon Javanese reflects localized influence. These innovations coexist with native Sundanese forms, creating lexical competition rather than immediate replacement. This study contributes to Sundanese dialectology by providing empirical evidence of external innovation in a border region and highlights the interplay between language contact, diffusion, and sociolinguistic adaptation.
