Abstract

Elderly individuals are vulnerable to cognitive decline due to aging, which affects memory, attention, and executive functions. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Brain Game Puzzle intervention on cognitive function among elderly residents at the Karawang Social Rehabilitation Center for the Elderly (PRSLU). A pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design was applied to 31 elderly participants selected by purposive sampling. The intervention involved Puzzle games conducted twice weekly for three weeks, with each session lasting 30 minutes, and cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). The Wilcoxon test showed a significant improvement in cognitive function post-intervention (p=0.001), with the proportion of elderly with severe cognitive impairment decreasing from 87.1% to 41.9%. These findings support the neuroplasticity theory that cognitive stimulation can maintain and enhance brain function in the elderly. This study implies that Brain Game Puzzle is an effective, low-cost, and easily applicable non-pharmacological intervention that can be implemented routinely in elderly care facilities to prevent cognitive decline.

Abstract

Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant disease often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Early detection of NPC is necessary to reduce morbidity and mortality of this disease. To date, early detection methods for NPC still have limitations, especially in terms of positive predictive value. Identification of DNA methylation abnormalities has been studied for its role as a marker for early detection of NPC. Objective: This review describes the potential of DNMT1, an enzyme involved in DNA methylation, as a biomarker for early detection of NPC. Methods: We conducted a literature search using PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The keywords used were "nasopharyngeal carcinoma AND DNMT1", nasopharyngeal carcinoma AND early detection, "nasopharyngeal carcinoma AND screening", nasopharyngeal carcinoma OR DNMT1, “DNMT1 OR Carcinoma”, nasopharyngeal carcinoma OR screening, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma OR early detection. Results: Increased DNMT1 expression is associated with global hypermethylation which is part of the early pathogenesis of NPC. LMP1, as an oncoprotein released by EBV, increases DNMT1 expression and activity. Conclusion: High DNMT1 expression in NPC indicates its potential as an early detection method for NPC.

Abstract

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are commonly caused by non-contact mechanisms related to muscle imbalance in supporting the knee, decreased flexibility, reduced muscle strength and endurance, poor joint coordination, and external pressure. ACL injuries can be treated operatively through reconstructive procedures. However, post-operative conditions following ACL reconstruction often lead to complications such as pain, inflammation, muscle atrophy, limited range of motion (ROM), and decreased lower limb muscle strength, which can delay functional recovery. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process to restore knee function. This study aims to describe the physiotherapy management in post-operative ACL patients in reducing pain, improving muscle strength, enhancing joint range of motion, and increasing functional activity. The method used was a case study involving one post-operative ACL patient at ABR Physiotherapy Clinic in Bojonegoro who underwent therapy from January 6 to January 23, 2025. Interventions included Electrical Stimulation (ES) and therapeutic exercise, with data collected using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Range of Motion (ROM), segmental circumference, Manual Muscle Testing (MMT), and the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS). The results showed a decrease in tenderness pain from a score of 2 to 0, motion pain from 2 to 0, an increase in knee flexion from 120° to 130°, extension from 10° to 5°, an improvement in muscle strength from 4 to 5 in the left knee, and an increase in functional activity score from 40 to 41. The conclusion of this study is that Electrical Stimulation and therapeutic exercise are effective in reducing pain, improving range of motion, enhancing muscle strength, and increasing functional activity in post-operative ACL patients.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction:Open fractures are bone injuries involving skin disruption, leading to direct bone exposure and a high risk of contamination. Emergency care reports indicate that around 50% of trauma patients die en route to the hospital, 35% due to severe injuries. Timely nursing response is crucial in early emergency management, especially in open fractures. This study aimed to assess the association between nurses' response time and the risk of hypovolemic shock in patients with open fractures. Methods:A descriptive correlational study was conducted from September to October 2024 at the Emergency Department of Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. Thirty-one nurses were selected using total sampling. Data were obtained through structured observations of eligible nurses. Results: Delayed response was observed in 32.3% of nurses, with hypovolemic shock occurring in 32.3% of patients. Fisher’s Exact Test revealed a significant association between nursing response time and hypovolemic shock risk (p = 0.040). Discussion: Delayed nursing interventions were significantly linked to increased hypovolemic shock risk. The findings underscore the need for effective leadership and prompt nursing action to prevent complications.

Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea is a common condition experienced by female students of reproductive age and can interfere with quality of life and academic activities. Abdominal stretching exercise (ASE) is a non-pharmacological intervention considered safe and effective for reducing menstrual pain without side effects. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of ASE in reducing the degree of primary dysmenorrhea among students of the Physiotherapy Study Program at Bali International University. This research employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test method involving 19 participants selected through purposive sampling. ASE was conducted twice a week for four weeks. The degree of dysmenorrhea was measured using the WaLIDD questionnaire before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results show a significant reduction in dysmenorrhea levels after the ASE intervention (p < 0.05), with an average decrease of 28.56% in WaLIDD scores. These findings indicate that ASE contributes to abdominal muscle relaxation, improved blood circulation, and stimulation of endorphin release, all of which help reduce menstrual pain. This supports the gate control theory and the role of prostaglandins in menstrual pain mechanisms. In conclusion, abdominal stretching exercise is effective in reducing the severity of primary dysmenorrhea.

Abstract

Functional ability is an important indicator in determining the level of independence of older adults in performing daily activities. Low physical activity and non-ideal body mass index (BMI) have the potential to reduce functional ability, especially in older women who experience physiological changes due to aging and hormonal shifts after menopause. This study aimed to determine the relationship between physical activity and BMI with functional ability in older women in Jegu Village. This research used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional analytic design. The sample consisted of 64 older women aged 60–74 years, selected through purposive sampling. Physical activity was measured using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), functional ability was assessed using the Barthel Index, and BMI was calculated based on weight and height. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test and multiple correlation analysis. The results show a significant positive relationship between physical activity and functional ability (p = 0.000; r = 0.783), and a significant negative relationship between BMI and functional ability (p = 0.002; r = –0.376). The multiple correlation analysis shows a significant relationship between physical activity and BMI simultaneously with functional ability (p = 0.000; R = 0.723; R² = 0.523), with physical activity being the dominant factor. It can be concluded that there is a strong relationship between physical activity and BMI with the functional ability of older women in Jegu Village.

Abstract

Background: Buloh honey possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as the ability to accelerate tissue regeneration. The innovative combination of Moist Wound Healing (MWH) and modern dressing based on Buloh bee honey provides an effective, safe, and affordable solution for managing diabetic foot ulcers. This approach can improve patients’ quality of life and reduce both the economic and public health burdens caused by poorly managed diabetic complications. Objective: To analyze the acceleration of diabetic ulcer wound healing before and after the intervention using the combination of MWH and modern dressing based on Buloh bee honey. Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental research design with a control time series comparison group. Results: Wound healing was assessed using the Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool, which evaluates parameters such as wound size, depth, edge condition, tunneling, necrotic tissue type and area, exudate type and amount, surrounding skin condition, peripheral edema, granulation tissue size, peripheral induration, and epithelialization area. The results showed that the combination of Moist Wound Healing (MWH) and Buloh bee honey ointment accelerated the healing of diabetic ulcers compared to conventional treatment. In the first week, the intervention group began to show healthy granulation tissue formation and reduced exudate, while the control group demonstrated slower improvement. By the fourth week, 73.1% of participants in the intervention group reached near-complete epithelialization, compared to 41.8% in the control group. Conclusion: The combination of MWH and Buloh bee honey ointment proved to be more effective in accelerating diabetic ulcer healing than conventional care. This intervention promotes faster new tissue formation, reduces exudate, and enhances wound epithelialization. The approach is safe, natural, and recommended as an alternative therapy for chronic wounds in diabetic patients.
