Abstract

Introduction: Carrying a bag that is too heavy, especially if it exceeds 10% of a child's body weight, is one of the risk factors that can cause postural disorders. This condition can have an impact on changes in the degree of spinal curvature, especially in the context of scoliosis. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between bag weight and the degree of scoliosis spinal curvature in children. Method: This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional observational design. The determination of the number of samples was based on the Slovin formula. The design used was a one-group design with an additional analytical approach to evaluate the effects caused. Data were collected by measuring the weight of the bag using a digital scale and measuring the curvature of the spine using a scoliometer. Results: The results of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed that the data did not follow a normal distribution. The Spearman correlation test indicated a relationship between bag weight and the degree of spinal curvature, although the relationship was weak. In addition, the Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference between the two measurement methods used. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between bag weight and spinal curvature in children aged 8 to 12 years.

Abstract

Weakness caused by motor neuron degeneration in Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can result in avoidance of physical activity, resulting in deconditioning and decreased health-related quality of life. The literature review that the author obtained from previous research has a role in shaping the character of thinking in this study. The articles used in this study were obtained from three databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar. The keywords used during the search were ALS, Exercise, Therapy, Exercise Therapy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, carried out a maximum of 2019. Out of 10 articles, there are 7 articles stated that aerobic exercise therapy and strength training had a positive effect on ALS. While 3 other articles showed changes but were not significant. The results of this preliminary ALSFRS-R study support the safety and feasibility of 12 sessions of supine whole-body stepping in individuals with ALS. This respiratory EMST training program was well tolerated and resulted in positive changes in respiratory and bulbar function in ALS. Our prospective CPET study measured significantly reduced exercise capacity in ALS via non-invasive CPET. Genetically predicted physical activity was not significantly associated with risk of neurodegenerative disorders. A 12-week combined aerobic and strength training program was significantly superior to freezing alone in improving respiratory function, mobility, and well-being in ambulatory ALS patients.

Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition affecting peripheral nerves, causing pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and wrist. This occurs when increased pressure develops within the wrist compartment that houses tendons and nerves. When pressure rises, it compresses the median nerve. This nerve innervates the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and half of the ring finger, so clinical manifestations appear in these areas. This condition can be acute or chronic, but chronic cases are more commonly found. Research Objective: To determine whether kinesiotaping and nerve glide exercise have an effect on the functional activity of the hand in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Research Method: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest and post-test one-group design. Observation was utilized to measure the functional activity scale of the wrist before and after the application of kinesiotaping and nerve glide exercise. The sample consisted of 12 respondents. The intervention was administered twice a week for 2 weeks. Results: Analysis using the paired T-test on the effects of kinesiotaping and nerve glide exercise yielded a value of p = 0.002 (p < 0.05). This indicates a significant change in the functional activity scale of the wrist in carpal tunnel syndrome patients before and after the intervention of kinesiotaping and nerve glide exercise. The findings conclude that kinesiotaping and nerve glide exercise

Abstract

Pathological vaginal discharge is caused by infections from pathogens such as Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida species, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Pathological vaginal discharge can cause discomfort, and if left untreated for a long time, it may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and cervical cancer. The Health Belief Model (HBM) is the most commonly used model to guide individuals toward engaging in preventive health behaviors. The application of HBM in preventing pathological vaginal discharge is important because it helps increase awareness and promote preventive behaviors. The use of natural ingredients to address pathological vaginal discharge is becoming more familiar among the community compared to synthetic products due to their safety and affordability.Research Objectives: To analyze the effectiveness of basil leaf decoction, evaluate the influence of HBM on preventing pathological vaginal discharge, and determine the effectiveness of the combination of basil leaf decoction and HBM.Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group conducted in Lubuk Pakam village. Respondents were divided into three groups with a total sample size of 150 individuals. Results: Pre-test results showed that initial scores were almost the same across all groups, indicating no significant differences before the intervention. After six weeks, the basil decoction group showed a 24.6% improvement in preventive behavior, the HBM group showed a 33.4% increase, and the combination group showed a 45.7% increase. These findings indicate that the combination of basil leaf decoction and HBM education is more effective than single interventions. The HBM model proved effective in enhancing awareness and preventive behavior, especially when combined with biological intervention such as basil leaf decoction. This combination produced a synergistic effect that encouraged higher compliance and stronger behavioral change compared to single interventions. The combination of basil leaf decoction and education based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) was found to be the most effective in improving preventive behaviors against pathological vaginal discharge in women of reproductive age compared to single interventions. This intervention significantly increased knowledge, perception, and motivation to carry out preventive actions. Therefore, this combined biological and educational approach is recommended for widespread implementation in women's reproductive health programs.

Abstract

Background: Ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries among athletes, characterized by high prevalence and significant impacts on performance, quality of life, and a high risk of recurrence leading to chronic ankle instability (CAI). Objective: To review current scientific evidence on the effectiveness of proprioceptive training as a primary and secondary prevention strategy for ankle sprains in the athletic population. Methodology: This narrative literature review was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords proprioceptive training, ankle sprain prevention, athletes, balance exercise, and injury prevention. Selected articles included relevant intervention studies, cohort studies, and systematic reviews. Results: Scientific evidence consistently demonstrates that proprioceptive training significantly reduces the incidence of ankle sprain by up to 38%. Its mechanism involves enhancing neuromuscular control, improving joint position sense (JPS), and optimizing protective reflexes through neuroplastic adaptations at both peripheral and central levels. Proprioceptive training offers superior long-term functional adaptations. Discussion: Impaired neuromuscular control resulting from proprioceptive deficits is the root cause of the high recurrence rate of ankle sprains. Proprioceptive training directly targets this mechanism, making it a more fundamental intervention than bracing, which only provides external mechanical stability, or strengthening, which does not fully address coordination deficits. The combination of proprioceptive training and strengthening yields the most comprehensive results. Conclusion: Proprioceptive training is an essential, evidence-based intervention in ankle sprain prevention and rehabilitation programs for athletes. This approach is effective in restoring sensorimotor function, enhancing joint stability, and significantly reducing the risk of recurrent injury. Recommendation: The implementation of proprioceptive training should become a standard in injury prevention protocols for athletes. Future research is recommended to focus on optimizing the dose, frequency, and progression of exercises, as well as utilizing neurophysiological biomarkers to map neural adaptations.

Abstract

Individuals with chronic illnesses, particularly diabetes mellitus, often encounter psychological challenges such as a tendency toward social isolation. Several factors contribute to this condition, including self-esteem and the level of family support. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem and family support with social isolation among patients with diabetes mellitus at Deli Tua Health Center. An analytical research design with a cross-sectional correlational approach was employed. A total of 54 respondents were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The findings revealed a significant association between self-esteem and social isolation (p = 0.000; < 0.05). These results indicate that individuals with higher self-esteem are less likely to experience social isolation.. This confirms that psychological resilience plays an important role in maintaining social functioning amid chronic illness. In conclusion, self-esteem serves as a key factor in reducing social isolation among patients with diabetes mellitus. Therefore, efforts to improve self-esteem through psychosocial support and nursing interventions should be prioritized to prevent social withdrawal in these patients.
