Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to describe and analyze teachers' experience with practicing loose part media innovation in early childhood learning and their implications for child development.Design/methods/approach – This study is qualitative descriptive with phenomenological design. The subject of this study is four teachers at PAUD Wadas Kelir. Data collection processes obtain through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and data analysis processes by reducing, presenting, and verifying data.Findings – The results of this study are that the loose part media innovation carried out by the teachers at PAUD Wadas Kelir includes the selection of loose part materials, motions, learning materials, and song or rhythm. The implication of loose part media in early childhood learning is the achievement of child development aspects, children's fine motor development in the form of coordination, and the ability To make motion simple like the clap. Development of cognitive showed with the child's ability to read and mention letters and numbers. Development of child art showed the ability to coordinate motion with rhythm or song, as well as a creation from loose parts material. Finally, the development of language child showed with the acquisition of new vocabulary and the ability to read the moment or after the play following the writing or the shape that has been compiled.Research implications/limitations – This study only focuses on aspects of loose part media innovation in the learning process and its implications for children’s development, so the limitations of this research are developmental aspects that are not focused on and are less sharp.Practical implications – This study contributes as additional reference material for teachers to develop loose media for children learning.Originality/value – This study gives a deep understanding of the innovation of learning media with loose part materials.Paper type: Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – The limited interaction among children in early childhood learning during the COVID-19 pandemic causes the lack of fulfilment of children’s socio-emotional development. This study aims at analyzing the dynamics of socio-emotional development occurred in TK Nurul Islam during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methods/approach – The research design of this study is qualitative research. The data are collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Then, the data are analyzed using Milles and Huberman models. To test the validity of the data, source triangulation and technical triangulation are used.Findings – The findings of this study explain that the socio-emotional development of children in TK Nurul Islam during the pandemic has not developed well. Some habitual actions encouraged by teachers —such as smiling, greetings, memorizing some short surahs, mentoring students, and having fun learning are able to stimulate children’s socio-emotional development after the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, children’s socio-emotional development after the COVID-19 pandemic can develop well as expected.Research implications/limitations – This study is only limited on the aspects of early childhood’s socio-emotional development.Practical implications – This study contributes to the knowledge and provides the examples of teachers’ practice in developing children’s socio-emotional development in early childhood education institutions.Originality/value – Research can be used as an evaluation to develop children’s socio-emotional development during the pandemic and after the COVID-19 pandemic.Paper type: Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to determine the effect of the teacher’s educational background on the ability to manage Early Child learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic.Design/methods/approach – This study is a descriptive correlational study with 86 ECE teachers in the Waru District as a sample. The analysis of this research uses simple regression, and the data collection process uses a questionnaire with the Google Forms platform.Findings – The results of this study are that the educational background and teacher training positively impact teachers' ability to manage Early Childhood Education (ECE) learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is proven by the R Square test obtained 0.467. In addition, the more mature ECE teachers are in line with the teacher's performance in managing ECE learning. So that in general, the educational background of teachers in Waru Regency has met the qualification standards set out in the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 137 of 2014 concerning National Standards for Early Childhood Education.Research implications/limitations – This study interprets that educational background, such as certificates, Linearity of education majors, and professional teachers’ certification, can affect teacher performance in learning management in early childhood education.Practical implications – This study contributes that the higher the level of ECE teachers with educational backgrounds and certificates under ECE, the more professional they are in carrying out the learning process in ECE.Originality/value – This study highlights that the quality of educator/teacher affects the ECE learning quality.Paper type: Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study aimed to determine the effect of the caterpillar game on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in children aged 5-6 years at TK Negeri Pembina Ki Hajar Dewantoro, Dungingi District, Gorontalo City.Design/methods/approach – The research uses experimental quantitative with pre-experimental type one grub pre-test and post-test. Data analysis used the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, followed by a t-test using SPPS software. Research respondents consisted of 30 children.Findings – The findings of this study resulted in an analysis of the value of the tcount amounted to 3,689. While the value of the ttable (α) = 0.05, which equals 0.674. If tcount >ttable 3.689 >0.674, in other words, tcount > ttable, then H 0 rejected and H 1 received. So that there is an influence between the caterpillar game on the ability of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in children aged 5-6 years at the State Kindergarten of Pembina Ki Hajar Dewantoro, Dungingi District, Gorontalo City.Research implications/limitations – This study focuses on children aged 5-6, the activity, and how the child completes the task correctly. In the learning process, some children are still challenged in their level of understanding, so there is a need for proper implementation of learning.Practical implications – This research contributes in the form of innovations to teachers in providing fun learning and references for the teaching team in developing learning media for children.Originality/value – This research provides an in-depth understanding of learning media innovation and developing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) on early childhood education.Paper type: Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to describe and analyze the teacher's experience in implementing independent learning using the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematic) method made from loose parts, namely by creating a fun education so that students can be actively involved in increasing children's creativity, so children's development aspects can develop well.Design/methods/approach – This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data analysis technique uses data collection, display, reducing data, and drawing conclusions. We are collecting data using observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects were teachers and children of group B of Nurul Iman Kindergarten.Findings – The study findings are in the form of loose parts media used by TK Nurul Iman's teacher in learning with the STEAM method, namely the selection of loose parts material using natural materials such as playing with sand, arranging leaves into necklaces, writing with water on the wall, arranging letters using pieces leaves above the ground. By using loose parts media, aspects of children's development will be achieved, including the artistic aspect: children can make pictures on the sand. Social-Emotional: children have behavior that reflects the attitude of self-confidence, caring, and empathy. Religious and moral values: children can name objects created by God. Language: the child can arrange the pieces of the leaf into a word. Cognitive: children can conceptualize numbers with sand and leaves. Physical motor: children can write using a stick and water on the school wall.Research implications/limitations – The study focuses on implementing independent learning using loose parts media with the STEAM method in students' learning process with natural materials, which have implications for children's development and independent learning.Practical implications – The study can be an additional reference for teachers in developing loose parts of teaching media to implement independent learning.Originality/value – This study provides an in-depth understanding of liberating early childhood by using STEAM loose part media.Paper type: Research paper
