Abstract

This study explores the readiness of Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers in West Java for 21st-century learning. Utilising a survey research design, an online questionnaire was distributed via WhatsApp to ECE teachers across multiple regions in West Java. The survey assessed teacher readiness based on Jan's (2017) characteristics of 21st-century educators, covering aspects such as student-centred classrooms, personalised instruction, technology competence, social competence, and continuous learning. Responses from 186 teachers were analysed using a Likert scale approach, revealing high readiness in learning management and social competence but moderate readiness in technology-related competencies. The findings indicate that while teachers are well-prepared to manage student-centred learning environments, there is a need for improved ICT training, particularly in areas like using digital tools and social media for educational purposes. Additionally, while social competence is strong, continuous professional development in technology integration remains essential. The study highlights the necessity of targeted professional development programs to bridge these gaps and ensure teachers are equipped with the skills needed for 21st-century education. These implications highlight the need for comprehensive teacher training programs and supportive professional communities to ensure ECE teachers can effectively meet the demands of modern education. Despite the study's geographical limitation to West Java and reliance on self-reported data, it provides valuable insights into the preparedness of ECE teachers. It suggests directions for future research to expand understanding across diverse contexts.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate the "Redi: Sang Sel Pelayar" storybook series as an educational tool for pediatric cancer patients, enhancing their understanding of cancer and improving treatment adherence with age-appropriate content. Using Sugiyono's R&D method, the study progressed through defining, designing, developing, and disseminating stages. Five types of childhood cancers were addressed: leukemia, retinoblastoma, osteosarcoma, neuroblastoma, and nephroblastoma. This study demonstrates that illustrated storybooks are effective in helping children understand cancer and related medical processes. The storybooks, tailored to specific cancer types and age groups with adapted characters, make it easier for children to grasp their condition. The overall average score of our readability questionnaire was 3.9, which means that our book is categorized as readable (3.4 < Mean > 4.2 = Readable). There was also a significant increase in post-test scores after the children underwent intervention by reading storybooks (P: 0.015; 95% CI 0.013–0.018). Evaluations showed significant increases in children's knowledge after reading the books, along with positive changes in their behavior and understanding of cancer. The implications for pediatric oncology care are significant, suggesting that culturally relevant educational tools can reduce anxiety and improve adherence. Despite the promising findings, the study was limited by a small sample size and a lack of long-term effect measurements. Future research should focus on larger samples and longitudinal studies to better assess the impact on adherence and well-being. Overall, the "Redi: Sang Sel Pelayar" series offers a novel approach to pediatric oncology education, with potential applications for other chronic illnesses, proposing a valuable addition to standard pediatric care practices.

Abstract

This study investigates the acquisition and development of Indonesian as a second language among early childhood learners within the Indonesian diaspora at the Kepong Guidance Studio in Malaysia. Utilizing a qualitative case study methodology, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving 21 children aged 4-6 years, their educators, and the principal. Despite the structured Indonesian curriculum, findings revealed that the dominant use of Malay significantly influences language development. Teaching strategies incorporating traditional Indonesian games and songs were found to be effective in enhancing language acquisition. Observational data indicated that 60% of children aged 4-5 years showed significant development in understanding and using Indonesian, while 87.5% of children aged 5-6 years exhibited strong repetition and communication skills in Indonesian. However, challenges included inconsistent language usage and the influence of the children's first language, Malay. The study underscores the necessity of tailored educational strategies that address individual learning needs and emphasize active parental involvement to reinforce language skills acquired in educational settings. Triangulation ensured data reliability and validity, though the small sample size and context-specific nature limit the generalizability of the findings. These results highlight the importance of inclusive and adaptive learning environments that cater to the linguistic and cultural needs of diaspora children. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of these educational strategies on language proficiency and cultural identity, with a broader scope and larger sample sizes to enhance understanding and support effective educational policies and practices for diaspora communities globally.

Abstract

This study investigates kindergarten teachers' perspectives on the poem "Panca Indraku" and its suitability for promoting language and cognitive development in children aged 5-6. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through interviews and online questionnaires from seven kindergarten teachers selected through purposive sampling. Based on the Miles and Huberman method, the analysis involved data collection, sorting, display, and conclusion drawing. Results indicated several challenges: limited time allocated for poetry activities, difficulty finding suitable poems, scarcity of early childhood poetry, perceptions of complexity, insufficient emphasis on reading skills, children's lack of confidence, and the complexity of language in existing poems. Nonetheless, "Panca Indraku" was favourably viewed for its simple vocabulary, appropriate structure, repetitive patterns, and alignment with cognitive development. These findings suggest that integrating age-appropriate poetry like "Panca Indraku" into early childhood education can enhance language development, cognitive skills, and imaginative exploration. The study highlights the need for more age-appropriate poetry and a curriculum that supports diverse literary forms. Limitations include a small sample size and subjective teacher perceptions. Future research should include larger samples and quantitative measures to understand poetry's impact on early childhood development comprehensively. It should explore various poetic forms and their effects on child development.
