Abstract

This study investigates intercultural barriers in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking, particularly in the context of virtual communication. Nowadays, communication requires not only language proficiency but also intercultural communicative competence. Nevertheless, learners can experience difficulties when they try to communicate with people coming from different cultures. The study aims to find out the types of intercultural barriers Indonesian EFL learners encounter and the ways in which such barriers occur during live interactions. This research employed a qualitative case study design involving ten Indonesian EFL learners who participated in virtual communication sessions with native English speakers through a language exchange platform. Data were collected through recorded interactions and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using thematic analysis and interactional analysis. The results show the following main types of intercultural barriers: linguistic, pragmatic, sociocultural, and psychological barriers. These barriers were interactionally discovered through processes with signs like hesitations, self-repair, misinterpretations, and the negotiation of meaning. The study shows that communication problems do not arise merely from the lack of competence but are interactionally produced during real-time communication.

Abstract

This study explores how Indonesian postgraduate students in Queensland University cope with language barriers in academic contexts through the use of personal strategies and institutional support. The research employed a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews. Two postgraduate students were selected through purposive sampling based on their length of study and experiences as international students. Data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns and themes. The results show that students adopted various self-directed strategies, such as active participation in academic and social forums, practicing spoken English with peers, and engaging in extensive reading. Both participants also emphasized the importance of institutional support, including English conversation clubs, academic workshops, and Artificial Intelligence-related training programs, which significantly enhanced their academic engagement. Preparation for advanced academic tasks varied, one participant focusing on structured training and competitions, while the other emphasized content mastery and relied on institutional services to refine language skills. The study concludes that overcoming language barriers requires a combination of individual initiative and systematic institutional support, highlighting the need for integrated approaches to assist international students in academic settings.

Abstract

advances in digital technology have driven changes in the history learning process in secondary schools through the use of technology-based interactive media. History education, which previously tended to be conducted in a conventional manner, is now undergoing innovation through the use of digital multimedia, interactive videos, educational apps, virtual museums, and web-based educational platforms. This study aims to analyze the use of interactive media as an innovation in history learning in secondary schools and to identify its impact on students’ learning motivation, learning outcomes, interest in learning, critical thinking skills, and participation. The study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, utilizing data collection techniques through a search of scholarly articles on Google Scholar, Garuda, DOAJ, and ResearchGate. The analyzed articles were published between 2020 and 2026, with a final total of 15 articles meeting the study’s inclusion criteria. The results of the study indicate that the use of interactive media has a positive impact on history learning because it enhances student engagement, strengthens understanding of the material, and fosters a more active and communicative learning environment. Furthermore, interactive media is considered more effective than conventional learning because the learning process is more visual, engaging, and contextual. The findings of this study indicate that the development of interactive media plays a crucial role in supporting innovative history education that meets the needs of 21st-century education.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative learning model assisted by online games in improving students' motivation and learning outcomes in sharaf (Arabic morphology) course material. This research was initiated by students' low motivation and difficulties in understanding word inflection patterns due to teacher-centered learning. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The research subjects consisted of 11 eighth-grade students at MTsS Inshafuddin, Banda Aceh. Data collection techniques included learning outcomes tests and motivation questionnaires, which were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant increase in learning outcomes, with the average score increasing from 64.3 to 85.1, or by 32.3%. The hypothesis testing revealed a significance value of < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. Furthermore, student responses showed an average percentage of 92%, falling into the highly positive category. Therefore, the online game-based TGT model is effective in improving students' learning outcomes and motivation in learning sharaf.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of self- learning and organizational climate on students’ academic achievement at Matangkuli State High School 1. The phenomenon of low student acceptance rates in college admissions serves as the primary rationale for conducting this study on the synergy between internal and external factors in education. The study employed a quantitative causal approach involving 48 respondents selected through a combination of purposive and accidental sampling techniques. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression to test both partial and simultaneous effects. The results indicate that self-learning has a positive and significant effect on students’ academic achievement. Conversely, the organizational climate did not show a significant effect when analyzed partially. Simultaneously, self-learning and the organizational climate together exert a significant influence on academic achievement, with a determination coefficient of 15.9%This confirms that students’ potential for independent learning and literacy will maximize their academic achievement and has been proven capable of overcoming potentially suboptimal school environmental conditions. Schools are advised to continue maintaining literacy support facilities to optimize the effectiveness of students’ self-directed learning

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate teachers’ digital literacy to improve their pedagogical competence at Jabal Rahmah Mulia High School in Medan, as well as to identify supporting factors, inhibiting factors, and the implications of its implementation using the Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) evaluation model. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using the CIPP evaluation model. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and a review of documents involving the vice principal for curriculum and teachers. Data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, while data validity was tested using source and technique triangulation. The results revealed that the evaluation of teachers’ digital literacy has been carried out through instructional supervision, evaluation meetings, and professional discussions. The evaluation is supported by school resources and policies, although it still faces several challenges in its implementation. Research findings indicate that the assessment of digital literacy contributes to improvements in teachers’ pedagogical competencies, the quality of learning, and the development of digital learning in schools. This study produced a model for assessing teachers’ digital literacy in boarding schools that positions teachers as the primary agents in the digitization of learning. This model can serve as a guideline for schools in developing sustainable teacher evaluation and professional development systems to enhance pedagogical competencies and support the transformation of digital learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the alignment between students’ learning styles and teachers’ instructional methods in relation to Arabic vocabulary (mufradat) mastery at MTsN 2 Banda Aceh. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach to obtain an in-depth understanding of the learning process. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with Arabic language teachers, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. To ensure the credibility and validity of the findings, data and theoretical triangulation were applied. The findings indicate that most students demonstrate characteristics associated with kinesthetic learning, preferring active participation, physical involvement, and direct learning experiences. In contrast, the dominant instructional method used by teachers is the lecture method supported by visual media, which remains largely teacher-centered and passive. This mismatch contributes to low student engagement, reflected in behaviors such as talking with peers, losing focus, and leaving the classroom during lessons. Furthermore, students exhibit limited Arabic vocabulary mastery and face difficulties in understanding, retaining, and applying vocabulary to construct simple sentences. The study concludes that greater alignment between students’ learning characteristics and instructional methods is essential for improving vocabulary mastery, increasing classroom engagement, and supporting the development of essential 21st-century learning skills.

Abstract

This study looks at how students view tourist advertising movies as genuine resources, the advantages and difficulties they encountered, and their recommendations for classroom integration. Fifty English for Tourism students at Bosowa University in Gowa, South Sulawesi, participated in a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design. Three focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and a 25-item questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model were used to gather data. Descriptive statistics, multiple regression, and Pearson correlation were used to evaluate quantitative data; reflexive thematic analysis was used to assess qualitative data. The results revealed a preponderance of favorable opinions. On a five-point scale, Attitude Toward Videos had the highest mean score of 4.28, while Perceived Usefulness received a mean score of 4.12. While technological access obstacles had a negative correlation with video acceptance (β = −0.38, p < 0.01), perceived usefulness had a substantial correlation with attitude toward videos (r = 0.72, p < 0.001). Three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: curriculum optimization, scaffolded challenges, and transformative engagement. Although there were still pedagogical and technological issues, students appreciated the videos' realistic tourism contexts. According to the study's findings, promotional videos for travel are seen favorably as genuine resources for English for Tourism classes.
