Abstract

Saga dari Samudra by Ratih Kumala is an interesting novel to study. As a fiction, this novel weaves together historical facts of life in Java in the 15th century. This article is compiled to reveal the dialogic forms between the characters, space and time, and how the novelist dialogues and negotiates with the characters he builds. Data are collected in the form of sentences and clauses, classified using Bakhtin's dialogic criteria which include chronotope, polyphony, and carnivalesque. The classified data are then coded and analyzed textually. The conclusions and meanings revealed are the results of analysis using Bakhtin's Dialogic theory. The analysis conducted leads to the conclusion that dialogue can influence power structures, moral and social norms, the anxiety of two voices in the same event but do not judge each other. Change not only reflects individual transformation, but also describes a broader social reality, such as imbalance of power, ignorance or social pressure that influences his actions in the past. The reversal of social hierarchy, two interpretations in one incident, a symbol of moral ambiguity and crossed boundaries, at the same time marking the change from victim to perpetrator, how Taksa responded by accepting what Nyai Ageng Pinatih's servant did who did not like her.

Abstract

This research is a study of five faces of oppression of Lamaholot women in three short stories by Silvester Petara Hurit, namely “Ina Tonu”, “Mama Eta” and “Pilkades”. Using Iris Marion Young's notion of oppression, the focus of this research is to identify the forms of oppression experienced by women and to understand the mechanisms by which customary, religious and government institutions practice this oppression. This research uses a discursive approach with a qualitative interpretation reading method. The results show that in these three short stories there are practices of exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperalism and systemic violence. This oppression is rooted in patriarchal structures, institutional control and cultural stereotypes. Therefore, through these three short stories, Hurit not only describes the reality of gender inequality but also criticizes the oppression experienced by Lamaholot women. In addition, these findings are expected to expand the socio-cultural study of literature and inspire advocacy for gender justice in the Lamaholot community in East Flores.

Abstract

The concept of intercultural communication competence (ICC) has become increasingly important in both formal and informal language learning contexts. ICC refers to the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and normative backgrounds. Despite its significance, there is a gap in the literature regarding the assessment of ICC, particularly in the context of Indonesian teachers. The  aim of this study is to assess the level of ICC among pre-service teachers in Indonesia. The study involved 66 randomly selected participants from three Indonesian private universities. Data were collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics and a one-way ANOVA test, with normality as a prerequisite. The results revealed that pre-service teachers exhibited a high level of ICC, with strong intercultural attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Furthermore, no significant differences were found based on the universities attended, indicating that the institution did not influence ICC levels. These findings underscore the importance of assessing ICC in pre-service teachers and suggest that they are well-equipped to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds in language learning contexts. The study highlights the need for further exploration of ICC in educational settings.

Abstract

This research aims to examine typology of personal pronouns in Austronesian language families in Indonesia with a particular focus on phoneme variation and syntactic patterns. This research takes examples from five regional languages: Bengkulu Malay, Belitung Malay, Pontianak Malay, Rejang, and Lembak. Data collection involved classifying personal pronouns according to the '1/2/3' person system as proposed in Dixon’s theory of personal pronouns. These pronouns were then analyzed within sentence structures to observe their syntactic behavior and then the researcher looked for similarities that characterize the language as an Austronesian family, as well as identifying its distinctiveness. The results of this study show that the five languages studied have similarities that characterize the language as part of the Austronesian family. In addition, there are differences in phonemes that characterize each language. For example, the use of the word “aku” to refer to the first person singular pronoun known in all the languages. However, phonological variations occur, in Rejang, the word “aku” undergoes a phoneme change to “uku”. In syntactic system all the languages studied have a system of Subject, predicate, then object. The findings in this study show phonological and syntactic dynamics that enrich the diversity of the syntax that enriches the linguistic diversity in the Austronesian family in Indonesia. These dynamics are influenced by various factors, such as social, history, and geography.

Abstract

The differences in address systems between Javanese and Arabic cultures require translation strategies to achieve equivalence. The address systems in these two cultures not only reflect personal relationships, but also distinct social structures and cultural values. This study aims to examine the translation strategies of address terms in the novel Gadis Kretek into Arabic. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a comparative and interpretative approach. The data consists of linguistic units in the form of address terms that represent social relations, closeness, and hierarchy among characters. Data were collected through close reading, identification of address terms in both the source and target texts, recording of data pairs, and transliteration of Arabic text into Latin script. The analytical techniques involved grouping the data, comparing forms and meanings, and identifying translation strategies. The results of the study reveal five translation strategies: borrowing, omission of address terms, contextual paraphrasing, alternative paraphrasing, and cultural substitution. The choice of strategies was influenced by the intention to preserve the source culture, clarity of the target text, lack of direct equivalence, and the context of character relationships. This study asserts that the translation of address terms reflects a complex cross-cultural meaning transfer process, which is not only linguistic, but also social and cultural in nature.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the representation of masculinity and the responses of male characters to societal demands for masculine characteristics in Eka Kurniawan's novel Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas. The article utilizes R.W. Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity and Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony to explore how masculinity is represented in the narrative and how male characters respond to the social construction of ideal masculinity. It identifies key themes related to masculinity and male character responses, as well as the interactions between characters and the internal conflicts they experience. The findings reveal that the representation of masculinity in the novel reflects the 1980s era, characterized by authoritative behaviour, sexual aggression, and the use of violence as a form of manliness. The conflict between masculinity expectations and individual emotional needs drives male characters to exhibit responses that reflect both resistance and affirmation of societal masculinity stereotypes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the denotative and connotative meanings of the word sponsor in the context of police investigation reports related to human trafficking cases in Indonesia, using a corpus linguistics approach supported by the AntConc software. The data consist of seven BAP documents from victims, witnesses, and suspects of TPPO cases, analyzed using the Word List, Concordance, and Collocates features to identify the frequency and collocational patterns of the word sponsor. The findings reveal that denotatively, sponsor refers to individuals or parties involved in the recruitment of prospective migrant workers. However, connotatively, the term carries a negative implication, often associated with illegal recruitment and exploitation practices embedded within human trafficking networks. Frequent collocates such as who recruited, on behalf of, and requested documents illustrate that sponsor is not semantically neutral, but socially constructed as a key actor in trafficking crimes. The findings indicate that changes in legal terminology are needed to improve accuracy and transparency in legal documents. As such, the results of this study can contribute to efforts to increase transparency and effectiveness of law enforcement in human trafficking cases.

This study aims to explore the forms and factors that cause disfluency in the television series Arisan. The method in this study uses Qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data were obtained through observation and documentation studies of dialogues broadcast in December 2024. Data collection techniques in this study used direct observation and documentary studies. While the data analysis technique used in this study was content analysis. The results of the study revealed that disfluency in Arisan! can be classified into four main types: repetition, pauses, speech repair, and use of filler words. These four types can occur at various levels, from words, syllables, to phrases. This is caused by unpreparedness or immature speech planning, psychological factors such as nervousness, mental burden, and situational pressure as well as social factors such as interaction with the interlocutor and listener expectations also contribute to the emergence of disfluency. This study shows that disfluency is not only a barrier in communication, but also part of the speaker's adjustment strategy in managing spontaneous verbal interactions. With this study, it is expected to be a source of knowledge related to the phenomena of language disorders that appear in daily activities.

Abstract

The term Deep Learning has become the current issue in educational field all around the globe. Deep learning is true learning, in the sense, that it is enduring, as opposed to shallow or surface learning that tends to be momentary. This term was proposed by Fullan et al. to refer to the process of acquiring the global competencies known as the 6Cs: character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. These competencies are suitable to prepare students to be confident in encountering globalization challenges. Deep learning is designed based on a new pedagogical model, a learning partnership between and among students and teachers to master of content knowledge, create and use new knowledge in the real world. The focus of teaching is to develop students’ ability to manage their own learning and to do things with their learning. In Indonesian context, Deep Learning is implemented based on a framework consisting of four main components: learning framework, learning experience, learning principle, and graduate profile dimension framework. The learning experience framework includes three aspects: understanding, applying and reflecting. In practice, Deep learning is based on three main learning approaches mindful learning, meaningful learning, and joyful learning.
