Abstract

This study focuses on Oliver Twist inferiority feeling during his childhood life. Oliver Twist as the main character of the novel experienced several miserable treatments from people around him. Along with the inferiority feeling, unfortunately it brings some effects towards him. This is the reason of why this study created by describing the inferiority feelings together with the impact qualitatively. Since the study is in literature matter, psychological and sociological approaches were applied to elaborate the inferior feeling experienced by the main character. There were five settings where Oliver Twist got bad treatment done by several supporting figures and made him become an innocent, rebel and courageous boy as the effects of those inferiority in this study.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of icons, indexes, and symbols contained in advertisements on YouTube about one beauty product named Wardah Perfect Bright Creamy Foam Face Wash. This ad aims to explain to the Indonesian people especially teenagers that to be beautiful it must look clean, healthy and shining. By caring for themselves and using certain products in order to highlight the characteristics of each without having to be someone else. The theory used in this research is the sign system theory with the Semiotics approach proposed by Charles Sanders Pierce. Where this theory can divide the sign system into three part namely icons, indexes, and symbols. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method that is applied to determine the contents of the overall meaning of Wardah Perfect Bright Creamy Foam Face Wash beauty products. As a research using descriptive research, this study only describes the writer's purpose in analyzing this advertisement, not looking for relationships, not testing hypotheses or making predictions. The data in this study are using qualitative data. In conducting this research, the writer collects, sorts, and groups the available data. Then the data are analyzed using the theory of semiotics, and finally the writer presents the results. Meanwhile, the writer found 3 data of the icon sign system, 3 data of the index sign system and 2 data of the symbol sign system. The overall data contained in Wardah Advertisement YouTube of Perfect Bright Creamy Foam Facial Wash is 8 data. Thus, it could be concluded that each advertisement had different sign and also different meaning. These differences had given different interpretations.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of icons, indexes, and symbols contained in the song "Ikat Aku di Tulang Belikatmu" by Sal Priadi. This research can be useful for people because it serves to express the song from the lyrics of the song itself and has the same feeling of the meaning of the song lyrics. The theory used in this study is the sign system theory with a semiotic approach proposed by Charles Sander Peirce. Where this theory can divide the sign system into three parts namely icons, indexes, and symbols. The method used is the Content Analysis method. Content Analysis is research that is a discussion of the contents of written or printed information in mass media and uses the theory of semiotic science in analyzing signs in songs. Thus, it can be concluded that each song in the lyrics has different signs and meanings. These differences have given different interpretations.

Abstract

In the animated film Inside Out explained about various types of emotions, including five basic emotional characters found in the film Inside Out, such as Joy (happy), Sadness (sad), Anger (angry), Fear (fear) and Disgust (disgust or hate). The basic emotions in this animated film will be interpreted by the signs implicit in the film. Mass media are official means and channels as a communication tool to spread news and messages to the wider community. But the media are not only a source of information and entertainment, but are also used as a means of communication. This study aims to find out how to present basic human emotions in the animated film Inside Out. The method used in this research Semiotic analysis method is Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis, by looking at the meaning of Denotation, Connotation, and Myth. The result we can see from the specified criteria, namely physical, fashion and clothing. This research shows that there are denotations, connotations, and myths in the representation of basic emotions in the film Inside Out.

Abstract

Ekpsresi netizen menjelang Pemilu 2019 sangat beragam ketika memberikan komentar terkait calon kedua kubu yang akan tampil pada kontestan Pemilu 2019. Ekspresi yang disampaikan berupa dukungan, antipati, dan masa bodoh. Tulisan ini mencoba mengangkat bentuk-bentuk ekspresi yang disampaikan netizen dalam instagram indozone.id. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskripsi yakni memaparkan bentuk-bentuk ekspresi pro, kontra, dan netral. Ekspresi netizen diambil dari Calon Presiden 02, Prabowo Subianto menyampaikan pidato kebangsaan bertema Indonesia Menang di Plenary Hall, Jakarta Convention Center, Senin 14 Januari 2019. Bentuk ekpresi pro jokowi seperti “semoga semangat jadi capres ya pak, siapa tau dapat rekor sebagai *capres terlama*. Sementara yang pro Prabowo “berjanji lahh pak tak apa2. Kubu sebelah 2014 sudah berjanji tapi tak ada yang ditepati. Setidaknya bapak sudah berjanji bakal terpenuhi, tidak seperti kubu sebelahh. #2019gantipresiden, sementara ekspresi netral “nah gitu dong damai, sementara kalian damai, kita coblos nurhadi aldo.”. Ekspresi-ekpresi ini dikaji dikaji dari fungsi ilokusi competitive, connivial, collaborative, conflictive.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis puisi dengan pendekatan hermeneutik. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif dengan analisis isi, dengan menganalisis puisi dengan pendekatan hermeneutik. Hermeneutik itu adalah pendekatan dengan cara yang sangat ilmiah dan terkaji dengan baik. Karena pendekatan puisi dengan cara hermeneutik itu berdasarkan penafsiran kita kepada suatu puisi yang terstruktural. Jadi yang tadinya puisi tidak dapat dipahami oleh semua orang yang tidak mengerti tentang dunia sastra karena kata-katanya yang mengandung majas-majas (hiperbola khususnya) menjadi bisa dipahami oleh semua orang yang tidak mengetahui tentang dunia sastra karena kata-kata dalam puisi tersebut ditafsirkan dalam bentu kata-kata yang biasa. Yang tadinya banyak mengandung majas menjadi kata-kata yang biasa atau yang mudah dipahami oleh semua orang.

Abstract

The research focuses on the analysis of category shift in the movie of Joker (2019). This study has two aims, namely (1) to identify the types of category shifts that appear in the English-Indonesian translation of Joker (2019) movie and (2) to describe the use of category shifts of Joker (2019) movie texts on transferring messages from the source language into the target language. Descriptive qualitative method was used in study to analyze the data. In this study, Catford's (1965) theory of translation shifts was applied. The data source of this study was the Joker (2019) movie by Todd Phillips in English with Indonesian subtitles. Observation and documentation method were applied in collecting the data. The subtitle of the film was the object of the observation. The results showed that all types of category shifts presented by Catford were found in the translation. The structure shift occurred in the highest occurrence, consisting of 46 data (43,40%) out of the 106 data. It appeared because there were different classes and functions of the word between English into Indonesian. The fewest occurrence was class shift consisting of 17 data (16,03%). The majority of the class shifts discovered in this study is shifts from noun to a verb. Unit shift occurred 24 cases (22,65%). Most of the unit shifts found in the source language were transferred from words to phrases in the target language and intra-system shift occurred 19 data (17,92%) from the total of 106 data found. This shift was represented by the plural forms in English that were mostly translated into singular forms in Indonesian because, as it can be seen in the translation, the markers of plural quantifier were followed by the singular noun in Indonesian. The plural forms were shown by the use of them in the noun phrases.

Abstract

The title of this research is Perjalanan Hidup Tokoh dalam Puisi The Raven karya Edgar Allan Poe. This research explains the description of the main character and the way of the main character live his life using imagery and figurative language. The Descriptive and Qualitative use on this research by taking all the data's poem in the form of lines and stanzas. The approach in this study uses the Objective Approach, because this research focuses on the literature itself. The result of this research show the main character as a coward, hypophrenia, and unstable. The main character in The Raven lives a life full of struggles, sorrows and sacrifices.

Abstract

Pada era digital, teknologi informasi dan komunikasi menyebabkan batasan antar negara menjadi pudar. Informasi yang didapatkan acap kali berbaur dengan hal-hal negatif sehingga mengikis rasa empati yang dimiliki. Nilai empati yang terkikis dapat mengakibatkan hilangnya tegang rasa sehingga dapat menimbulkan konflik dalam tatanan masyarakat. Membaca adalah salah satu kegiatan yang dapat meningkatkan rasa empati. Saat ini, sastra adiluhung mulai tidak diminati ditengah arus sastra populer. Untuk meminimalisir hilangnya karya Sastra Inggris adiluhung, penelitian ini mempertemukan mahasiswa muda dan karya sastra adiluhung dalam aspek empati. Data primer yang akan digunakan dalam penelitian kualitatif ini adalah narasi serta dialog dalam karya Robert Louis Stevenson yang berjudul Treasure Island (1883). Kemudian, data sekunder berupa hasil kuisioner yang ditujukan pada empat (4) mahasiswa Sastra Inggris Universitas Muhammadiyah Lampung. Teori yang akan digunakan dalam membantu penelitian ini adalah teori respons pembaca / Reader Response dan teori aspek empati. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan Treasure Island sebagai karya sastra Inggris adiluhung dapat mengasah kemampuan empati para mahasiswa Sastra Inggris Universitas Muhammadiyah Lampung. Kehangatan, kelembutan, rasa peduli dan kasihan adalah aspek empati yang di temukan dalam karya sastra ini. Relevansi Treasure Island dengan kondisi era digital saat ini adalah tentang nilai nilai kerjasama, nilai kebaikan hati, dan nilai kekeluargaan.

Abstract

This research analyses the internal focalization of characters in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Based on narratology, focalization can be divided into three kind zero focalization, internal focalization and external focalization. Internal focalization is when narrator knows what character thoughts, they cannot explain the thought of others character. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley told us about the story about a man named Victor Frankenstein who created monster and brought that back to life. After that Victor was terrorized by the monster and ruin his life. The story mostly uses internal focalization as every character told the story through their perspective. This paper uses a qualitative method. The data are collected and represented in direct quotes from the book. The theory that is used in this research is based on Gérard Genette's theory about narratology, which is provide the information about how the story is told based on narrator. The research reveals that Mary Shelley uses more than one internal focalization in Frankenstein. The first is coming from Captain Walton to Victor Frankenstein to the monster and come back to Victor and ended with Captain Walton. The shifts point of view in internal focalization shows others character perspective about how the story goes.
