Abstract

This research examines the application of Nida’s (1964) formal equivalence theory in machine translation, with a focus on the structural and grammatical aspects of CNN headlines translated by Bing Translator and DeepL. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing translated headlines related to the 2024 United States Election. Data was collected from CNN’s official website from October to November 2024, and translations were obtained from both machine translation tools. The analysis shows that whereas both translation tools attempt to maintain structural accuracy, Bing Translator tends to preserve rigid sentence structures, while DeepL adapts phrases to improve fluency, sometimes at the expense of grammatical accuracy. A readability assessment, based on the researcher’s interpretation, shows that DeepL produces smoother translations, which are more accessible to readers. This research contributes to the machine translation reliability discussion in journalism and emphasizes the challenge of maintaining formal equivalence while ensuring readability. Future research can explore a broader corpus or integrate computational linguistic analysis to improve translation evaluation methodology. Keywords:  Formal Equivalence; Machine Translation; News Translation; Readability;  News Headlines

Abstract

This study investigates the role of context that influences the use of elaborated code (EC) and restricted code (RC) in Asma Elbadawi’s speech on Wardah Heart to Heart talk show episode two. Employing a sociolinguistic approach, this study draws on Bernstein's code theory, as well as Holmes’s context theory using intralingual and extra-lingual commensurate methods. The results show that Asma tends to use EC to convey her message effectively, but she also uses RC in particular situations on the talk show. The findings indicate the use of EC and RC in Asma’s speech is not only influenced by her socio-economic background but also by the situational context of the speech event, such as genre, setting, participants, message content, and purpose. This study contributes to offering a broader perspective in the sociolinguistic field by highlighting how different contexts in a speech event, especially in a talk show, can influence the code usage of an individual.

Abstract

Archives in fine arts are the subject of study, namely how archives are presented in galleries or public spaces. This article examines the curatorial ideas at the Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s exhibition held in 2019 at the Cipta II Gallery, Taman Ismail Marzuki, using a historical method approach and through an archive analysis method supported by archival theory according to Terry Cook's view. During his life, Sanento Yuliman was an Indonesian art critic where at the Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s archive exhibition. The exhibition curator exhibited Sanento Yuliman's archives in the form of sketches, illustrations, caricatures, paintings, and objects collected personally. Through this exhibition study, the collection of archives as the subject of the exhibition presented in the Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s exhibition provides findings that Yuliman's work is no longer just scientific work in written form. Still, various other forms of work, such as visual and illustrative works, are found in caricatures and paintings. This archival exhibition study sees the impression of Yuliman's deep appreciation of fine art so that his critical work is not just an idea that the art field can accept but a deep appreciation that comes from the ability to work, thoughts, and results of reflection that can be seen from the objects exhibited in Mengingat-Ingat Sanento Yuliman (1941-1992)’s as an archive.

Abstract

This research examines the Archival Exhibition: 1st Annual Jeprut Permanen 2014, which showcases documentation and artefacts from the performance art of the Jeprut group in Bandung. This exhibition is interesting to analyze due to its unconventional presentation of archives, resembling contemporary art installations. Though detailed descriptions of the exhibition and analysis based on archival theory, this research aims to examine the status and display format of archives in the exhibition. The method used is descriptive qualitative of archive study. The results show that although the presentation resembles installation work, the exhibited objects still meet the criteria of archives as records of performance events. This exhibition expands the understanding of the form and presentation of archives in contemporary art, demonstrating that archives can function not only as historical documents but also as artistic mediums. The archival exhibition approach successfully makes archive the main object while presenting them in a visually appealing form, showing the potential of archives in the context of art galleries. Keywords: archival exhibition, performance art, artefacts

Abstract

The total number of users of regional and local languages in Indonesia has declined significantly. Such dominant factors are noticed to be able to weaken local languages in Indonesian society such as the lack of competence about Indonesian culture, the demands, and benefits of learning foreign languages. Similar to the situation which happens to the use of the Lembak language from the Lembak tribe of Bengkulu province in everyday life, it is fading significantly as the impact of globalization, foreign languages like English and Korean, and the lack of parental attention in cultivating it toward their children. Thus, there were concerns about keeping indigenous languages like Lembak language alive, especially with the influence of dominant languages. It is urged that bilingual dictionary must be compiled to be learnt by young generation and to make it easier as well as to preserve the indigenous language to be mastered by them since there is no specific document on the word collection of Lembak language. The systematic method was used in compiling the regional-Indonesian bilingual dictionary of Lembak language including Data Collection, Data Processing, Data Compilation and Editing, Testing and Revision. This process includes Translation, Pronunciation, Definition, and Examples. As a result, the process of compilation ends with the preparation of a bilingual dictionary format that comprises the alphabetical format, editing process, and dictionary testing. This dictionary is expected to be able to provide benefits in education and preservation of regional languages, facilitate learning, and support intercultural communication.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the character dynamics of the central characters in the novel Lord of the Flies to demonstrate the character development of humans when faced with isolated island due to World War II. This research uses descriptive research method with qualitative approach. The data collection technique involves reading Lord of the Floes and look for experts’ data related with character dynamics of the central character. Data are linked to intrinsic elements, including character and characterization, setting, plot, conflict, symbolism, and irony, and relate them to extrinsic studies covering psychoanalytic theory, the life and death instincts theory, and narcissism theory, all three theories proposed by Sigmund Freud. The results of this study show that the character dynamics experienced by the central characters, Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, are dominated by complex psychological and social factors, including the influence of an isolated environment and group tensions. The central characters play their respective roles. Ralph tends to favor the values of order and morality, Jack is influenced by the death instinct and aggression, whole Piggy retains logic and rationality. In conclusion, this analysis shows that under extreme conditions, human character can change. Humans can lose their moral values due to basic primal drives such as the desire of power, fear, and the tendency to act violently. When tensions rise. The moral principles that guide human behavior seem to disappear, so humans tend to fall into destructive behavior that ignores a sense of empathy and civilization. Keywords:  Central Character; Dynamics; Psychoanalysis; Instinct; Morality

The second generation of Indian immigrants encounter a range of difficulties in adjusting to a new environment, including economic hardship and discrimination due to their non-native English proficiency. They also experience the consequences of discrimination that their parents faced, such as being denied recognition as Indian immigrants in Canada due to their thick accents. Furthermore, some second-generation Indian immigrants may discriminate against their fellow Indian immigrants.

Abstract

This research focuses on the wide-ranging notion of inclusivity looking at cultural studies and highlights the non-Western contexts like Indonesia. Following PRISMA protocols, a systematic literature review was carried out on 45 selected articles published between the years of 2015 and 2025. The findings show that there are three primary themes: culture representation, power relations, and local traditions. It can also be remarked that the western notion of inclusivity seems inadequate when placed in collectivist contexts. ‘Gotong royong’ as an example of Indonesian inclusivity models reflects traditional local customs. Furthermore, decolonial and intersectional frameworks illuminate the enduring socio-historical inequalities that are shaped through identity-based hierarchies within practices of inclusion. This research articulates the need to develop a culturally specific framework of inclusivity which regards inclusivity as multiscopic; rooted in local contexts while applicable worldwide. It seeks to contribute to scholarship and guide policy for more inclusive governance towards social justice.
