Abstract

The aim of this article is to formulate the contributions of Muqātil bin Sulayman (d. 767), a Muslim scholar from Merv, Central Asia, in the formulation of classical Quranic interpretation and its later development, particularly his idea about Cross-referential interpretation, which seeks meaning by connecting terms across different Qur'anic verses, and Narrative-based interpretation, which considers multiple sources to provide context for the verses being explained. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the study examines how these two approaches shaped classical tafsir and its development. The study finds that the first idea became a foundation for orthodox tafsir i.e., bi al-Ma'thur, while the second one contributed to early contextual tafsir, though it faced criticism regarding the validity of its sources. Additionally, despite criticisms of foundationalism, cross-referential interpretation became an epistemological basis for the development of modern tafsir methods, such as it is largely used in thematic tafsir (tafsir maudhui) and tafsir maqasidi (objective-based interpretation), due to their comprehensive and cohesive approach to Qur'anic interpretation.

Abstract

This study examines three paradoxical phenomena frequently observed in contemporary Muslim societies: generous Muslims who nonetheless endure persistent worldly hardship, miserly individuals who appear outwardly content, and non-Muslims who exhibit notably charitable behaviour. Employing a qualitative, library-based design with documentation as its primary data-gathering method, the study applies Ferdinand de Saussure's structural semiotics through four analytical stages: langue–parole, signifier–signified, synchronic–diachronic, and syntagmatic–paradigmatic relations, to reinterpret Q.S. al-Layl (92): 5–11. The findings reveal that when generous Muslims who affirm divine recompense continue to experience worldly difficulty, this reflects an unfulfilled dimension of taqwā, whereby the promised ease is deferred to the hereafter while hardship persists in the present life. Conversely, non-Muslims who practise generosity without faith receive their worldly ease in full, yet face adversity in the eschatological realm. The apparent happiness of miserly individuals – Muslim and non-Muslim alike– proves illusory and transient, masking deeper forms of suffering that manifest as social disintegration in this world and punitive consequences in the hereafter. Such miserliness further cultivates arrogance, perceived self-sufficiency, anxiety over material loss, and a fundamental rejection of the principle of divine recompense. These findings underscore that ease and hardship, as articulated in Q.S. al-Layl (92): 5–11, operate across both temporal and eschatological dimensions and cannot be assessed solely through observable worldly outcomes.

Abstract

Qur’anic interpretation is inseparable from the historical, intellectual, and socio-political contexts of its interpreter. In the nineteenth-century Malay world, the Qur’an functioned not only as a religious text but also as a source of legitimacy for political authority, legal institutions, and systems of governance. Yet the role of Qur’anic interpretation in shaping Malay political thought remains underexplored. This article examines Raja Ali Haji’s Tsamarat al-Muhimmah to analyse its interpretive method, epistemological foundations, and forms of Qur’anic reception within the Riau-Lingga Sultanate. This qualitative library-based study employs Qur’anic reception theory and social construction theory within a Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The findings indicate that Raja Ali Haji adopted a predominantly taḥlīlī approach grounded in ra’y (reasoned interpretation), characterised by a socio-literary orientation and sensitivity to local political realities. His interpretations were shaped by three interrelated influences: his experience as a royal adviser, a religious worldview informed by the Khalidiyyah-Naqshbandiyyah Sufi tradition, and engagement with al-Ghazālī’s Naṣīḥat al-Mulūk. These influences enabled him to formulate a Qur’an-based vision of governance that integrated political authority, legal order, and ethical leadership. The study further demonstrates that Qur’anic reception in Tsamarat al-Muhimmah is predominantly performative-functional. Qur’anic verses are employed as normative foundations for political, legal, and statecraft discourses while simultaneously informing regulations and socio-political practices. By showing how scriptural interpretation was transformed into mechanisms of governance, this article highlights the Qur’an’s role as a source of knowledge production, political legitimacy, and social transformation in the nineteenth-century Malay world. The findings contribute to broader discussions on the relationship between scripture, authority, and political culture in Islamic societies.

Abstract

Scholarly attention to local Islamic textual traditions has grown considerably, yet the pedagogical dimensions of regionally produced hadith literature remain underexplored. This article investigates the pedagogical function of hadith in Hidāyat al-Ṭālibīn fī Bayān Aḥādīṡ Sayyid al-Mursalīn (Guidance for Seekers in Explaining the Hadiths of the Leader of the Messengers), a local hadith text composed by Buya Manshur within the intellectual tradition of Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah (PERTI) in Minangkabau. Employing qualitative textual analysis and compilation criticism, the study examines how the selection, arrangement, and explanation of 82 hadiths across eight thematic chapters construct a coherent educational discourse that integrates hadith, fiqh, and practical spirituality. The findings reveal a deliberate progressive structure, moving from epistemological foundations (hadith scholarship, revelation, faith, and religious knowledge) toward embodied ritual practice (ablution, ritual bath, menstruation, and dry ablution). This structure indicates that fiqh is not simply a repository of legal rulings but a pedagogically ordered framework for cultivating religious subjectivity. Significantly, the foregrounding of ritual purity demonstrates that bodily discipline functions as a formative site for spiritual awareness and worship readiness. The article argues that Hidāyat al-Ṭālibīn represents a distinctive local model of Islamic pedagogy in which hadith operates simultaneously as normative proof-text and as an instrument for shaping Muslim selfhood. This finding contributes to broader discussions on indigenous Islamic educational traditions and the vernacular development of hadith scholarship in the Malay-Indonesian world.

Abstract

Kitāb Maulid al-Barzanji, composed by Jaʿfar al-Barzanji in the 12th century AH/18th century CE, holds a central position in Muslim devotional life across the Malay-Indonesian world. While existing scholarship has examined its liturgical and cultural significance, its Qurʾanic dimension, particularly the presence, reception, and transformation of Qurʾanic verses within its narrative structure, remains underexplored. This study investigates the modes of Qurʾanic reception embedded in Maulid al-Barzanji, focusing on the identification of Qurʾanic verses thematically aligned with its faṣl narratives and their reinterpretation within hagiographical, cosmological, and panegyric discourses. Employing a qualitative library-based methodology, this research utilizes systematic content analysis through keyword identification, semantic mapping, and cross-referencing with two authoritative exegetical works: Tafsīr Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī and Tafsīr al-Munīr by Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī. The analytical framework draws on Ahmad Rafiq's theory of Qurʾanic reception, categorizing reception into exegetical, aesthetic, and functional modes. The findings reveal strong thematic correspondences between selected Qurʾanic verses, including Q.S. al-Anbiyāʾ [21]:107, Q.S. al-Qalam [68]:4, Q.S. al-Aḥzāb [33]:21, and Q.S. al-Isrāʾ [17]:1, and narrative episodes concerning the Prophet's birth, moral excellence, exemplary conduct, and spiritual journey. These verses function exegetically as theological legitimations, aesthetically through symbolic and literary elaboration, and functionally as normative references shaping ritual practice and communal identity. The study argues that Maulid al-Barzanji represents a form of living tafsīr (al-tafsīr al-ḥayy), wherein Qurʾanic meanings are dynamically rearticulated into devotional narratives. This research thereby contributes to Living Qurʾan studies by demonstrating how Qurʾanic reception operates through hagiographical literary constructions that reinforce prophetic authority and collective religious experience.

Abstract

Buya Mawardi Muhammad is a distinguished Islamic scholar, recognised as a senior educator at the Thawalib Padang Panjang Islamic Boarding School and for his extensive scholarly publications. His distinctive contribution lies in the compilation of hadith books expressly intended to enhance the moral education of students—an approach rarely found in the pesantren literary tradition. The ethical principles included in these hadith books remain relevant, transmitted for generations, and are still imparted at Perguruan Thawalib (Thawalib School), Padang Panjang. This study aims to examine the contributions of Buya Mawardi Muhammad to the development of moral education through his hadith works and their impact on students' character formation, particularly at Thawalib Padang Panjang. This study employs a qualitative approach that is based on a literature review. Primary data were taken from three hadith books by Buya Mawardi: Jawāhir al-Aḥādīth al-Nabawiyyah, al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah, and al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah wa Syarḥuhā, while secondary data were gathered through interviews with his descendants, students who had studied with him, and leading figures from the Thawalib. Using content analysis facilitated by ATLAS.ti software, several key findings emerged. First, Buya Mawardi's works significantly contribute by systematically compiling hadith literature focused on three main themes: ethics or character (akhlak), creed (aqidah), and worship (ibadah). These books are systematically organised and designed for various educational levels, ranging from three years of tsanawiyah (junior high school) to three years of 'aliyah (senior high school, or Kulliyatul Ulūm al-Islāmiyyah). Second, the impact of Buya Mawardi's teachings can be seen in the formation of students' character, marked by virtuous conduct, scholarly enthusiasm, and a commitment to social values such as empathy, solidarity, and generosity. This study helps improve hadith studies related to moral education in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Minangkabau and enhances the understanding of Islamic teaching methods that are relevant to today's social and cultural issues in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the paradigm shift in the interpretation of Q. 4:1 within the corpus of Indonesian Qur’anic exegesis across historical landscape of Indonesian exegesis, an area that has not been systematically mapped using a theory-driven framework. Five primary works were selected as the objects of analysis: Tarjumān al-Mustafīd by ʿAlī al-Fansūrī, Marāḥ Labīd by Nawawī al-Jāwī, Tafsīr al-Azhar by Karim Amrullah, Tafsīr al-Mishbāh by Quraish Shihab, and Tafsir Kebencian by Zaitunah Subhan. Employing Thomas S. Kuhn’s paradigm shift theory and discourse analysis methods, this study identifies three key findings. First, the interpretation of Q. 4:1 has undergone a transformation from a theocentric paradigm, which views the creation of Ḥawwāʾ from Ādam’s rib as its theological basis, to an anthropocentric paradigm that grounds human unity in humanistic and egalitarian values. Second, this shift is also evident at the epistemological level, moving from classical to modern sources, from global to thematic methods, and from disciplinary to interdisciplinary approaches. Third, the paradigm transformation correlates directly with the exegetes' intellectual contexts: Alī al-Fansūrī and Nawawī al-Jāwī reflect traditionalism, Karim Amrullah and Quraish Shihab represent modernism, while Zaitunah Subhan embodies neomodernism. Overall, this study demonstrates that the paradigm shift in Qur’anic exegesis is not merely an exegetical phenomenon but also reflects broader epistemic and ideological transformations in Islamic thought which offer a critical lens for understanding the evolution of religious authority and social values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse how hadiths have been employed as means to delegitimize health protocol policies during the performance of prayer, including the use of masks, spacing of rows (saf), praying at home, and even mosque closures—a phenomenon that has received limited attention in hadith studies, particularly in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Adopting a constructivist approach, the study employs two levels of analysis: descriptive and critical, drawing data from social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. The findings show substantial variation in the media type, source, and quality of the hadiths employed. The interpretations of the hadith largely fall into two categories: simplistic and literalist–translationist. Both modes of understanding are prone to specific cognitive patterns: (1) authoritarianism and irrationality, and (2) romanticization of the past coupled with religious egoism. Collectively, these results underscore a pronounced polarization between “hadith” and “science.”

Abstract

This study examines hadiths concerning religious moderation through a maqāṣid al-sharī'ah framework in the context of contemporary interreligious relations. Despite extensive hadith scholarship, few studies systematically apply the maqāṣid framework to moderation discourse, especially in addressing religious extremism rooted in literalist interpretations that overlook Islamic law's normative objectives. Employing a thematic (mawḍū'ī) method, this study analyses hadiths from Ṣaḥīḥayn and al-Sunan al-Arba'ah concerning tolerance, the prohibition of ghuluw (excessiveness), and the Prophet Muhammad's interfaith practices. Al-Shāṭibī's maqāṣid framework serves as the interpretive lens, focusing on the protection of religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn), life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), and human dignity. The findings show three guiding principles: rejecting religious extremism (ghuluw), putting ease (taysīr) over difficulty, and accepting religious pluralism as a normal part of life. This study is the initial effort to implement al-Shāṭibī's classical framework for contemporary interfaith ethics, which illustrates that religious moderation in hadith transcends doctrinal mandates to provide contextual ethical-operational guidance. The research offers a maqāṣid-based hermeneutical paradigm that bridges scriptural authenticity with plural social realities, equipping Islamic scholars, policymakers, and interfaith practitioners with methodological tools to counter extremism and develop inclusive public theology in religiously diverse societies.

Abstract

This study examines TikTok content in Indonesia featuring the “Keajaiban Al-Quran (Miracles of the Qur’an),” focusing on its intersection with product promotion and audience engagement, which reflects practices of religious commodification. It investigates the relationship between posts highlighting Qur’anic miracles and broader Qur’anic scholarship, identifying strategies of commodification and their impact on audience perceptions of the Qur’anic concepts presented. Using Miles and Huberman’s content analysis framework—data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing—the study finds three key points. First, TikTok posts contribute to the popularization and construction of the concept of iʿjāz al-Qurʾān. Second, the presentation of this concept is closely tied to commodification through product promotion, engagement prompts (likes, shares, comments, follows), and hashtags. Third, audiences generally accept and actively disseminate these commodified posts. TikTok features, including the “yellow basket” and audiovisual framing, enhance engagement and perceived credibility. However, these posts risk misrepresenting iʿjāz al-Qurʾān and weakening viewers’ critical reasoning. The study highlights how social media dissemination of Qur’anic knowledge is increasingly susceptible to distortion, shaped by competing personal and group interests.
