Abstract

This study investigates how focalization techniques are applied in Khalid Fahad's From The Ashes, with reference to the narratological theoretical framework developed by Gérard Genette. The main focus of the research lies on three types of focalization: zero focalization, internal focalization, and external focalization. Through a qualitative-descriptive method, this study identifies and analyzes how the three types of focalization are used in conveying the narrative, shaping the audience's perception, and building social meaning in the storyline. The results show that the film is dominated by a fixed internal focus centered on the main character who is a victim of bullying, thus presenting a subjective and empathetic narrative. In addition, there is also a shift to zero focalization in some scenes that show the objective reality of bullying as a social phenomenon. In other words, From the Ashes not only depicts the personal experiences of the victims, but also highlights the structural and systemic aspects of bullying in a broader social context. This research aims at how focalization strategies can reinforce social criticism and moral messages in cinematic works.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning formed through the interaction of various forms, namely language, images, music, sound, and movement in the song video clip. Using a qualitative method with a multimodal discourse analysis approach, this study analyzes how the five forms of modes work simultaneously in conveying messages. The results of the study show that each form plays an important role in building the theme of longing, loss, and hope. Language is used to convey the narrative, images and movements strengthen the emotional meaning, while music and sound create an atmosphere that supports the overall message. These findings indicate that the multimodal discourse approach is able to reveal complex meanings in works of art, as well as being a means to represent ideas, experiences, and social realities through various complementary forms.

Abstract

This study was conducted because many women's positions are marginalized in a text in a novel. This study aims to describe the position of the characters in the novel Perempuan yang Menangis kepada Bulan Hitam by Dian Purnomo using Sara Mills' feminist theory. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with reading and note-taking techniques to collect data. The data source is the novel Perempuan yang Menangis kepada Bulan Hitam by Dian Purnomo and the data obtained are in the form of quotes, both speech and narrative in the novel. The results of the study contain 64 subject-object and reader positions. The results of this study are the subject or narrator positions described in the novel are Mrs. Leba Ali, Mrs. Agustin, Magi Wara, Magi, Lawe, Leba Ali's relatives, and Mama Bernadet. While the object positions are Magi, Ina Kecil, Tara, Ama, Leba Ali, the kidnapper, Om Vincent Dangu, and the women. The reader position is to involve the reader so that they feel what the characters in the novel feel.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the ability of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Cikarang Pusat in writing speech texts using the jigsaw model. This study used a non-equivalent control group design, namely an experiment (quasi-experiment). The population of this study was all eighth grade students and the sample in this study was class VIII A as the experimental class and VIII B as the control class. Data processing using SPSS version 26 was carried out with normality, homogeneity, hypothesis, n-gain, and TCR tests. The results of this study were proven by the results of the tests given, namely the average posttest score for the ability to write speech texts using the jigsaw model was greater than the average pretest score before the application of the jigsaw model, the average pretest score was 59.33. After the puzzle model treatment was applied, the average posttest score was 85.33. And 88.13% was the result of the TCR. Based on these values, it can be concluded that the application of the jigsaw model is effective in improving the speech text writing skills of eighth grade students.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Found Poetry model on the poetry writing skills of Grade XI students at SMAN 6 Karawang in the 2024/2025 academic year. This research employed a quantitative approach using a posttest-only control group design. The sample consisted of two classes: an experimental class treated with the Found Poetry model and a control class using conventional learning. The instrument used was a poetry writing test based on the assessment aspects proposed by Waluyo (2003), namely diction, imagery, figurative language, rhyme/rhythm, typography, theme, feeling, tone, message, and unity of the poem. The analysis results showed a significant difference between the posttest scores of the experimental and control classes. The average posttest score of the experimental class was 35.70, while the control class scored 23.67. The t-test results showed a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a positive influence of the Found Poetry model on students' poetry writing skills. Thus, Found Poetry is proven effective and can serve as an alternative method for teaching poetry writing at the senior high school level.

Abstract

This study examines the structure and function of Tutunggulan performances in Raharja Village using Sims & Stephens' performance theory and Dundes' folklore function theory. The method used is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. Research data was obtained from observations, documentation, and interviews with Tutunggulan performers in Raharja Village. The results of the study show that 11 of the 13 performance structures of Tutunggulan in Raharja Village are present. Two indicators are not present in the Tutunggulan performance in Raharja Village because the Tutunggulan performance in Raharja Village is not a verbal performance but a musical performance and does not include text in its performance. Furthermore, 4 out of 6 indicators of folklore functions were found in the Tutunggulan performance in Raharja Village. The 2 indicators that were not fulfilled were (1) imposing social sanctions and punishments to encourage good behavior and (2) serving as a means of social criticism. A shift in the function of Tutunggulan was also found, from its original form as an activity of pounding rice to its current form as entertainment for the people of Raharja Village.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menganalisis makrostruktur dan mikrostruktur dari tiga kamus pelajar ekabahasa, yaitu Kamus Bahasa Indonesia untuk Pelajar, Cambridge School Dictionary, dan Mu’Jam Al-Muḥiid. Efektivitas kamus tidak hanya ditentukan oleh entri leksikal, tetapi juga kejelasan dan kelengkapan desain strukturnya. Makrostruktur mencakup organisasi keseluruhan entri, seperti urutan alfabetis, sistem pengindeksan, jenis lema, dan unsur lainnya. Sementara itu, mikrostruktur meliputi informasi detail setiap entri, seperti pelafalan, kelas kata, definisi, contoh kalimat, etimologi, sinonim, antonim, dan label gaya bahasa. Dengan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif, penelitian ini mengidentifikasi persamaan dan perbedaan struktur kamus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Cambridge School Dictionary memiliki fitur makro dan mikro yang sistematis dan komprehensif sehingga efektif untuk pembelajar bahasa Inggris. Kamus Bahasa Indonesia untuk Pelajar cukup membantu, namun terbatas ketiadaan sinonim dan antonim. Mu’Jam Al-Muḥiid sebagai kamus klasik bahasa Arab unggul kedalaman makna dan kekayaan etimologi, tetapi belum memiliki fitur modern yang ramah pengguna, seperti label sosial dan contoh penggunaan kontekstual.   ABSTRACT This study analyzes the macrostructure and microstructure of three monolingual student dictionaries: the Indonesian Dictionary for Students, the Cambridge School Dictionary, and Mu’Jam Al-Muḥiid. The effectiveness of a dictionary is determined not only by its lexical entries but also by the clarity and completeness of its structural design. Macrostructure encompasses the overall organization of entries, such as alphabetical order, indexing system, types of entries, and other elements. Meanwhile, microstructure encompasses detailed information about each entry, such as pronunciation, word class, definition, example sentences, etymology, synonyms, antonyms, and stylistic labels. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study identifies similarities and differences in dictionary structure. The results show that the Cambridge School Dictionary has systematic and comprehensive macro and micro features, making it effective for English learners. The Indonesian Dictionary for Students is quite helpful, but is limited by the lack of synonyms and antonyms. Mu’Jam Al-Muḥiid, as a classical Arabic dictionary, excels in its depth of meaning and richness of etymology, but lacks modern, user-friendly features, such as social labels and contextual usage examples.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Rendahnya keterampilan membaca teks cerita pendek siswa yang ditunjukkan oleh kurangnya minat membaca dan ketidakmampuan mereka memahami struktur, unsur intrinsik dan ekstrinsik, serta kaidah kebahasaan cerita pendek merupakan hal yang mendorong penelitian ini. Desain penelitian ini adalah quasi eksperimental dan menggunakan metodologi kuantitatif. Sebanyak 62 siswa menjadi sampel penelitian, 31 di kelas eksperimen, yang menggunakan model Teams Games Tournament (TGT) dengan bantuan educandy, dan 31 di kelompok kontrol, yang menggunakan metode ceramah. Dengan rata-rata N-Gain sebesar 0,72 (kategori tinggi) dibandingkan dengan 0,46 (kategori sedang) untuk kelas kontrol, temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan peningkatan yang cukup besar dalam keterampilan membaca cerita pendek kelas eksperimen. Kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol berbeda secara signifikan, sebagaimana ditunjukkan oleh nilai signifikansi 0,000 < 0,05 pada hasil Uji Mann Whitney. Oleh karena itu, telah dibuktikan bahwa model tgt, dengan bantuan educandy, berhasil meningkatkan terampilan membaca cerita pendek siswa.   ABSTRACT The low reading skills of students' short story texts, indicated by their lack of interest in reading and their inability to understand the structure, intrinsic and extrinsic elements, and linguistic rules of short stories, are the driving force behind this research. This research design is quasi-experimental and uses quantitative methodology. A total of 62 students became the research sample, 31 in the experimental class, which used the tgt model with the help of educandy, and 31 in the control group, which used the lecture method. With an average N-Gain of 0.72 (high category) compared to 0.46 (medium category) for the control class, the findings of this study indicate a significant increase in the short story reading skills of the experimental class. The experimental and control groups differ significantly, as indicated by a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05 in the Mann Whitney Test results. Therefore, it has been proven that the tgt model, with the help of educandy, successfully improves students' short story reading skills.

Abstract

Small talk in greetings is an integral part of polite communication in Indonesian society, rooted in cultural and social values. This study aims to identify and analyze forms of small talk in Indonesian greetings through Geoffrey Leech’s politeness principles. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a pragmatic discourse analysis method. The data source consists of utterances found in Indonesian-language vlog videos produced by the researchers and uploaded to the Plurikultural Indonesia YouTube channel. Data were collected using observation, participation, and note-taking techniques, and analyzed based on Leech’s politeness maxims: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The findings reveal that small talk expressions in greetings reflect pragmatic strategies to maintain harmony and communication ethics. Each maxim emerges in varied contexts depending on the situation and relationship between speakers. These findings highlight the significance of politeness in daily interaction and have implications for the development of contextual BIPA teaching materials and intercultural education rooted in local values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze stylistic elements in a collection of poems using a stylistic approach with content analysis methods and a library research design. The data, consisting of words and phrases from 19 poems, were categorized into figures of speech, structural manipulation, and imagery. Data collection techniques included reading, observing, and note-taking. The analysis revealed a rich variety of language styles, with 82 instances of figurative language, 65 structural manipulations, and 98 uses of imagery that enhance the meaning and rhythm of the poems. These findings were implemented into an e-learning poetry module, validated by two experts and applied at SMA Negeri 1 Tanjungsiang. Based on questionnaires completed by 35 students, 96.9% of responses indicated that the module was clear, engaging, and supportive of independent learning.
