Abstract

Student’s cognitive abilities can be developed early, including thinking logically and symbolically and problem-solving using various methods. Therefore, this quantitative descriptive research aims to determine the symbolic thinking ability of kindergarten students through Montessori games based on gender. The subjects of this study were 112 kindergarten students from eight schools in the Central Aceh district who were selected by random sampling. Data processing techniques include editing, coding, scoring, and tabulation. The analysis was carried out using a frequency table with guidelines for assessing child development. Data were obtained from tests, observations, and interviews. Based on the analysis, it is known that the symbolic thinking abilities of male and female students are at the level of developing as expected. There are still students at the beginning to develop and undeveloped levels for both male and female students in this ability. There are differences in ability between male and female students, especially in indicators: i) Mentioning numbers 1-10 and ii) Counting and matching numbers with number symbols. While on the indicator of recognizing vowel and consonant symbols, there is no difference in ability between male and female students.

Abstract

Supporting students’ physical development and creativity under the influence of modern globalization is one of the key tasks for today’s science community. The present study aims to develop an individual program of physical and creative development in first- and second-year female students, taking account of their educational and anthropometric characteristics. Students’ level of creative thinking was assessed according to William’s methodology, and a physical education program for experimental group respondents was developed to link the two factors. Consequently, the program’s implementation demonstrated significant changes in the respondents’ creative thinking towards a positive gradation. The number of respondents with low creative thinking scores in the primary follow-up survey increased to an average of 120 students. At the same time, the Chi-square analysis to compare the experimental and control sample in detail indicates that experimental and control sample designs are consistent (χ2=122.77). This study may be used in more in-depth research on the interrelationships between youth’s physical and creative development. Besides, it can also serve as a prototype for implementing associated integrated student development programs at the university.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between historical understanding, historical thinking, towards historical consciousness in learning history. This type of research is ex post-facto with a correlational design. The population is class X high school students in Yogyakarta, with a sample of 177. The side technique uses cluster random sampling. Data collection uses instruments in the form of historical understanding tests, historical thinking tests, and historical consciousness questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out through partial correlation and multiple correlations with a significance level of 0.05, and the prerequisite test analysis used normality, linearity, and multicollinearity tests. The results show that the relationship between historical understanding, historical thinking, and historical consciousness in history learning has a strong and significant correlation. These three components should not be separated from the history learning process so that history learning is more meaningful for its historical values.

Abstract

Teachers of elementary school must be professional and have digital skills in Revolution 4.0, and Society 5.0 age progresses. This article includes a thorough assessment of the research on elementary school teachers’ professional competence, professional development, and digital competence. This research is needed to determine what professional elementary school teachers did and why they should be professionals in the digital age. The writing of this systematic review of literature articles was assisted by the Publish or Perish 7, Mendeley, VOSviewer, and Nvivo 12 Plus application. The search for articles in Scopus indexed journals is limited to the last 11 years (2010-2021). From the search results, there were 100 Scopus indexed articles, then articles were selected according to compatible themes into 31 selected articles. Professionals’ teacher, professional development, pedagogical content knowledge, teacher professional development, professional development program, and professional competence are among the findings of the theme/topic. The articles were analyzed according to the topics determined through the NVIVO 12 Plus. This article contributes to subsequent research and becomes a study for the theme of professional elementary school teachers and teacher competence in the digital era.

Abstract

Curiosity and critical thinking as one of the characteristics and skills developed in the goals of Indonesian education and 21st-century learning. Curiosity is a driving force for intrinsic motivation to explore behavior and gain new understanding and knowledge through observation. Curiosity and critical thinking skills are the needs of every individual to explore sciences such as biology. This study’s aim is to explore the curiosity and critical thinking skills of prospective biology teacher students. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a survey method. The sample of this study amounted to 150 students who were taken using purposive random sampling. Curiosity data was collected using science curiosity in learning environments (SCILE) and critical thinking skills were collected using the developed instrument. The data obtained were analyzed using the partial least square program to determine the contribution of gender to scientific curiosity (SC) and critical thinking skills. The results of the analysis show that gender contributes directly to critical thinking skills through SC on the stretching indicator. In general, SC needs to do research to find out the contribution of each critical thinking.

Abstract

Fraud is a problem that occurs in various organizations, including educational institutions. This condition is very ironic, educational institutions as institutions are required to teach anti-fraud education, but in fact, the educational institutions themselves are still fraudulent. This study aimed to explain the factors that can influence the principal, treasurer, and school committee to abuse school aid funds. The research sample was 145 principals, treasurers, and school committees for the elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels selected by convenience sampling method. All variables were measured using five Likert scales and analyzed with the multiple regression method. Instrument validity test using Pearson product-moment. This study shows that we found that pressure, internal control, integrity, and religiosity influence fraud. High financial pressures stemming from greed, a luxurious lifestyle, debt, integrity, low systems of control, and religiosity can increase fraud. These results reinforce the importance of schools or education-related regulatory agencies to be able to take policies to form a school environment that encourages honesty, limits teachers to hedonism, has a fair compensation system, and encourages teachers to practice worship, which needs to be done to avoid financial fraud from abuse of school aid funds.

Abstract

Geometric thinking skills remained a topical issue in mathematics education. The purpose of this research is to investigate the van Hiele levels of geometric thinking skills of the students in Sokoto state to provide a clear picture of the students’ levels for the appropriate development of learning activities, and better understanding. The study involves three mathematics teachers and 200 students (100 students each of basic and senior secondary school students). The samples of the teachers were purposely selected and students were randomly selected. There were two instruments used in the study; interviews for the mathematics teachers while a van Hiele test for geometric thinking was adopted to collect data for the students’ van Hiele levels of thinking. Thematic analysis (for teachers’ interview), descriptive, and Mann-Whitney U test for the analysis of students’ van Hiele levels of thinking was used. The result shows that all the teachers indicate that the traditional approach is the dominant method used in teaching and learning and that students in the state lack basic skills in school geometry. Also, the result indicated that the majority of students sample among Basic and Senior secondary schools in Sokoto state were operating at level 0 respectively. Furthermore, a significant difference between the two independent groups was found in favor of senior secondary school students. It is hoped that in the future, educational institutions could use the present research as a guide for the development and design of modules, learning activities based on the van Hiele levels to bridge the gap in the state.

Abstract

To ensure the success of science learning oriented to higher order thinking skills, especially scientific communication skills (SCS), valid and effective instruments are needed. The existing instruments, although helpful, are still too general and have not touched the socio-cultural context. Therefore, we developed an instrument to measure SCS according to the characteristics of students in Indonesia. This study tested the validity, reliability and assumptions of the hypothetical model of the scientific communication skills inventory (SCSI) instrument developed. This study involved 1,287 students in Indonesia. The test was carried out through confirmatory factor analysis with structural equation modelling (SEM) using AMOS version 21. The results of the analysis show that the reliability of the instrument based on Cronbach’s alpha coefficient is 0.720. The convergent validity test detected one item of the oral presentation indicator as invalid and the discriminant validity test confirmed that all instrument items were declared valid. The goodness of fit test shows all scores according to the recommended standard criteria so that SCSI can be used to identify the SCS ability profile of students in Indonesia. For further research, we recommend the development of a learning model that prioritizes the context of social issues to grow students’ SCS.

Abstract

The general problem of this study was to determine the literacy level of instructors in English on assessment for learning and cognitive process dimensions in terms of the following parameters such as classroom assessment objective, classroom assessment theoretical basis, types of tests, content, and performance standards and competencies, and cognitive process dimensions. To achieve this aim, the researchers involved five university administrators, 15 instructors in English, and 225 college students during the school year 2020-2021. The questionnaire on the literacy level of instructors in English on the assessment of learning and cognitive process dimensions was utilized. The results were processed using statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) and presented using appropriate tables and texts. The findings revealed that: first, although instructors in English are utilizing specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) learning objectives, they still have to distinguish between three learning domains; secondly, while instructors in English are excellent in identifying the diversity of students, they have to look for various assessment tools; third, though they have flexibility in crafting learning goals, and assess students holistically, they need to be familiar with levels of cognitive process in achieving profound assessment for learning.

Abstract

Statistics is a branch of mathematical study in universities. Statistics courses are not too tricky to master for students in Mathematics education. In contrast, non-mathematics students, such as students of English education, own the paradigm that statistics is a complex subject since they have to apply formulas and substitute those formulas with numbers as a basic knowledge of general statistics course. There are a lot of studies on the statistical thinking skills of a pre-service teacher. However, statistical thinking skills influenced by the adversity quotient factor have not been widely studied. This study aimed to identify and examine the statistical thinking skills of pre-service English teachers based on the dimensions of adversity quotient and statistical thinking ability. This is a quantitative study with a sample of 314 students of English pre-service teachers who took statistics courses for language education and were selected by cluster random sampling technique at a university in Cimahi, West Java, Indonesia. The results showed that based on control, origin, ownership, and endurance positively influenced students’ thinking abilities. However, there is no positive effect between the latent variable of the reach dimension on the students’ statistical thinking ability. The students’ thinking skills tend to be classified at the quantitative level.
