Abstract

This study aims to analyze the marketing channels of fishery commodities, examine the quality control of fishery products, and evaluate the utilization of cold storage facilities at the Selili Fish Landing Site (PPI Selili) in Samarinda City, Indonesia.. The research employed a descriptive survey method using both quantitative and qualitative approaches through observation, interviews, and primary data collection. The results showed that there are three marketing channels, namely Fishermen–PPI Selili–Consumers, Fishermen–Collectors–PPI Selili–Consumers, and Fishermen–Collectors–PPI Selili–Retailers–Consumers. The highest marketing margin was obtained by retailers, while the total marketing margin from fishermen to retailers ranged from IDR 3,000/kg to IDR 29,000/kg. The findings also indicate that the utilization of cold storage facilities at PPI Selili still requires improvement to better support the maintenance of fishery commodity quality. Therefore, optimizing cold storage facilities is expected to help maintain fish freshness, extend shelf life, and improve the efficiency of the fisheries supply chain in the region.

Abstract

White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is a leading aquaculture commodity in Indonesia whose production is often hampered by Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection, the causative agent of Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) with mortality reaching 85–100%. This study aimed to determine the effect of immersion in jeruju leaf extract (Acanthus ilicifolius) on the immune response and survival of V. parahaemolyticus-infected white shrimp, and to identify its optimal concentration. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used with five groups: negative control, positive control, and extract immersion at 200, 300, and 400 mg/L for 30 minutes. Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA followed by Duncan's test. Results showed that jeruju leaf extract immersion significantly affected (p<0.05) THC, DHC composition (an increase in the proportion of granular cells), and post-infection survival rate. The 400 mg/L concentration (treatment C) produced the best results, with the highest THC of 15.08 × 10⁶ cells/ml, the highest proportion of granular cells at 65.67%, and the highest SR of 79.17%, compared to only 48.33% in the positive control. These findings demonstrate that jeruju leaf extract has potential as an environmentally friendly herbal immunostimulant for controlling V. parahaemolyticus infection in white shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract

The coastal waters of Tanjung Bayang Beach, Makassar City, are utilized for various activities, including fisheries, tourism, and residential settlements. The intensity of these activities has the potential to degrade water quality due to the input of pollutants, making an assessment of water quality status essential for sustainable coastal management. This study aimed to determine the water quality status of the Tanjung Bayang coastal waters using the Pollution Index (PI) method. Water samples were collected from three sampling stations, namely the Jeneberang River Estuary, Tanjung Bayang Beach, and Anging Mammiri Beach (Blue Beach), during both high and low tide conditions. Water quality status was evaluated using the Pollution Index method in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 115 of 2003, with reference to the marine water quality standards stipulated in the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 51 of 2004. The results showed that Pollution Index values ranged from 0.71 to 1.68 during low tide and from 0.718 to 1.868 during high tide. The water quality status at all sampling stations ranged from good condition to lightly polluted. During low tide, the lightly polluted category was identified at several sampling points in the Jeneberang River Estuary and Tanjung Bayang Beach, while similar conditions were also observed at several points during high tide. Overall, the level of pollution tended to be higher during high tide than during low tide, indicating the need for regular water quality monitoring to support sustainable coastal water management.

Abstract

Pond farmers in Mattiro Sompe District turned their ponds into rice fields due to a decrease in crop yields, limited seawater availability for saltwater fulfillment in ponds because the estuary experienced siltation which caused ponds far from the estuary to experience. This study aims to identify the factors that affect the conversion of pond land into rice fields and evaluate their impact on the socio-economic conditions of the people of Mattiro Sompe District, Pinrang Regency. Using multiple linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS, it was found that more stable availability of irrigation water and decreased pond productivity were the main drivers of conversion. Economically, people's income increased significantly from an average of Rp8,500,000 to Rp25,855,000 after conversion, with conversion cost as the most influential variable (p = 0.000) and R² value of 0.799. Although there were no statistically significant social variables, land type had the highest contribution to social change (β = 0.316), with an R² of 0.783 indicating the strength of the model. These findings conclude that land conversion has a positive economic impact, but needs to be balanced with attention to social dynamics in the process of adaptation and management of community conflicts.

Abstract

Breakwater construction in coastal areas is essential for enhancing port stability and ensuring the safety of fisheries activities; however, the construction phase often generates socio-economic pressures on communities dependent on port operations. This study aims to analyze the impacts of breakwater development at Beba Fishing Port, Takalar District, with a focus on changes in fishermen’s income, local economic dynamics, and social disturbances during construction. The research employs a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, which integrates quantitative and qualitative analyses in a sequential manner. The initial phase involved a survey of 40 respondents—including fishermen, fish traders, small-scale entrepreneurs, and nearby residents—followed by in-depth interviews and field observations based on Participatory Action Research. Chi-square analysis was used to assess the relationship between demographic characteristics and levels of impact. The findings indicate that fishermen’s income decreased by 11% during construction due to operational disruptions at the port but increased by 6% after the breakwater became fully functional. Economic impacts were more pronounced among fishermen and fish traders (χ² = 8.0; p < 0.05). Socially, communities experienced conflict, pollution, and environmental discomfort, particularly in areas affected by heavy-equipment traffic. Inferential analysis revealed significant associations between age (χ² = 11.73; p < 0.01) and education level (χ² = 8.10; p < 0.05) and conflict experiences, with younger and less-educated groups being the most affected.
