Abstract

This study examines the issue form and pragmatic strategies of the imperativeinsistence in Banjar language. Through this study will be known speaking cultures of Banjar sosciety. The research objective was to describe the nature and pragmatic strategies of imperative in Banjar language. The method useisdescriptive qualitative by using record and field-notes techniques. The data werecollected from daily speech events in the traditional markets in the Wujud District at the South, North, and Central upstream. The data collected from January until March 2015. The result of the research that is pragmatic imperative insistence in the speech between sellers and buyers at the upstream traditional market in South Kalimantan is using markers, such as: ayu 'come on', kasi/capati/lajui 'quickly', the affirming gin 'yes', and the reason larangnya'expensive'. Besides, the other marker is when the speaker uses utter speech intonation hard or firm. The sentence use is a command line mode while the narrative strategies used in the imperative command of Banjar language is direct strategy.

Abstract

 The language choice is a maintenance symbol of traditional culture value concept. By using and choosing regional language- in this paper is Bugis - in the family field, have meaning that the traditional culture value concept of Bugis ethnic can be maintenanced. This is because the traditional culture can be well known by its own language. By using the phenomenon of choosing Bugislanguage by Bugis ethnic in the regency of Donggala, The Province of Sulawesi Tengah, the aim in the paper will describe (1) The pattern of Bugis language by Bugis ethnics in family, and (2) the supported factors of the pattern. Method applied in the paper is sociolonguistics approach in givingquesioner technique, interviewing, surveying, and recording. The analysis based on the percentage of choosing the usage of Bugis language pattern in family field. The result shows that the Busgis ethnics in the regency of Donggala as the non-native ethnics, have maintenanced the using of language infamily field, eventhough they have different in age, gender, education, and jobs. Supported factors of choosing Bugis language is loyality, the awareness of language norm, language pride, the age, and jobs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the improvement of learning to speak by using the method of learning community (study group) in the students of class IXB SMP Negeri 19 Palu in the planning, implementation and assessment phase. The approach used in this research is qualitative descriptive approach. This type of research is a classroom action research. The data of this study were taken through tests and nontes. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The result of the research shows that (1) this planning is done in collaboration with the teacher in preparing the lesson plan and the planning of language learning on the speaking skill aspect by using the learning community method on the aspect or criteria of speech assessment (the accuracy of speech, grammar, word choice, mastery of topics, voice volume, and gestures and mimics, (2) the implementation of cycle I, there are still many activities of students and teachers have not been done maximally.In the second cycle of learning to speak increased during the learning process, and (3) the evaluation results learning to speak through the application of learning community method (learning community) showed improvement.The results of speech test analysis showed that in the first cycle average value of 45 and including very low category increased in cycle II, that is with an average value of 74 and including the high category.As for the percentage results an increase of 29%. Keywords: Learning, Speaking, Methods Learning Community (Community Learning) Students Class IXB SMP Negeri 19 Palu

Abstract

A primary issue in this study is a rule phonotactics in Muna language. This study aimed to describe the rulesphonotactics of syllable and word in Muna language. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitativemethod. The use of this method is intended to systematically and accurately describe the characteristics andproperties of natural language data Muna and relationship of phenomena in the data and resulting desriptionof actual data. Method applied is a method of data collection and methods refer to a conversation. Referto the method is done by listening to the use of language by tapping techniques, refer to the technical note,recording technique and technique of introspection. Furthermore, data analysis using a unified assessmentand distributional methods. The use of these techniques meant that the problems associated with the toolsstudied determinants that are beyond the language in question and which are in the languages concerned.Furthermore, this technique is conducted with the following steps: (1) making a prediction probability distribution of phonemes based on the number of phonemes in a language Muna, both in its level of syllables and words; and (2) looking for evidence of the existence of the distribution of data sources in order to obtainthe rules of substitution and permutation fonotatik with phonemes. The results showed that out of 200 inBM Swadesh vocabulary found as many as 56 or 28% said syllable pattern V and as many as 199 or 99.5%patterned silabe KV. Furthermore, the rules fonotatik words with vowels with vowels with 14 words or around56% collocation of V-V and not found as much as 11 or 44%; collocation of vowel-consonant there are 91 orabout 73% and is not found as many as 34 or 27% collocation of V-K; and consonants collocation with vowelsare 102 or as much as 82% collocation of K-V and not found as much as 23 or 18%.

Abstract

The motifs means an element that is meaningful and that are repeated in one or a number of works. In asingle work, the motive is the meaning of the smallest elemenin the story, while a symbol is a person,object, or event that suggest more than its literal meaning. A literary symbol can include traditional,conventional, or public meaning, but it may also be estabilished internally by the totalcontext of the workin which it appears. A literary symbol can be setting, character, action, object, name, or anything else inwork that maintains its literal significancewhile suggesting other meanings.The problem studied in thisresearch is the study of the psychology literature on the motives and symbols of the existing characters inthe novel The Mayor of Casterbridge. The goal of this research is to discover, collect the fullest thendescribe disclosure motifs and symbols of the existing characters in the novel The Mayor of Casterbridgeis. The method used is the method of the study of literature (literature research), descriptive, and informalmethods. The result of the discussion showed that The Motif novel ofThe Mayor of Casterbridge areCoincidence, The Tension between Tradition and Innovation, and The Tension between Public Life andPrivate Life. The symbolof the existing main character in the novel The Mayor of Casterbridge are Redand Black, Bridge, Five Guineas, The Casterbridge Ring, The Caged Goldfinch, The Bull, and TheCollision of Wagen.

Abstract

Indonesian folklore are varied in the regional languages. Those folklore, however, have similar patterns as well as different patterns. One of the similar patterns that can be found in the Indonesian Folklore is the phenomenon of the characters turning into a stone. This research is aimed to elucidate the meaning of the phenomenon in the folklore. Based on the analysis of LeviStrauss’stucturalism to the folklore of central Kalimantan, it is concluded that the change of the character turning into a stone is a symbol of calamity as a results of breaking the rules and life norms.

Abstract

Affix verbs in the Saluan language can be added to basic word or basic form in the form of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and numerals. The affix has various forms and functions. This study examines the forms and function of verb affixes in the Saluan language. Related with that, this paper aims to describe the forms and function of verb affixes in the Saluan language. The data of this study were obtained using the litterary method. The data is processed using the intralingual equivalent method through a change technique. The results of this study indicate that there are five verb affixes in the Saluan language, namely prefix, suffix, confix, infix, and combinations of affixes. There are nine verb prefixes, namely moN-, pino-, i-, o-, ba-, po-, ko-, maha-, and mompo-. The moN prefix has four allomorphs, namely mom-, mong-, mo-, and mon-. There are  two verb suffixes, namely -onon and-kon. There are four verb confixes, namely kino-an, kina-mo, kina-anmo, and maha-an. The verb infix is only one, namely -in-. Different case with a combination of affixes. The combination of verb affixes is nine, namely moN-akon, moN-kon, moN-i, i-akon, i-kon, pino-akon, pinokon, i-i, -in-an, -in-akon, and iin-kon. There are five functions of the affix form, namely changing the word category in its basic form, forming bitransitive verbs, forming transitive verbs, reciprocal verbs, and forming passive verbs.

Abstract

Things on women's lives have always been discussed in various domains of life, suchas legal, economic, politic, or social. Those are also being the main discussion in theliterary world. Some authors in their own manner and perspective reveal sides ofwomen. However, most of them in literature shows that women are weak creatures asare being weakened by the pressure of various things, such as politics, culture, or thelaw. Women’s voice and movement are still underestimated by the dominant power. Itapplies universally, not least in China, the country which was known as a source ofvery high culture. The paper will explore conflicts of Feng whose life on the extremedifferent political situation on the novel The Flowers in Shanghai by Duncan Jepson.The analysis was based on the descriptive analysis methodology by approaching somegender concepts from Holmes and Oakley. The conclusion shows that changes in thepolitical situation and culture never allow women to develope themselves as chargedto their weakness spot. Jepson emphasized that women should pay so dearly forchanges their made.

Abstract

One of the phenomena of language contact is interference. Languageinterference can occur at the level of phonology, morphology, sintax, andlexical. This research aims to describe the lexical interference in the locallanguage on the use of Indonesian language by the teenagers in Palu and alsodescribe the lexical factors causing interference local languange intoIndonesian language. The method used is participant’s observation, that is byobservation, recording, and note-taking. The data classified by the types ofinterference and then analyzed by structure. The result shows that the using ofIndonesian language by teenagers in Palu, there is lexical interference, namelylexical interference of local language (mother tongue), lexical interference ofderivative words (Betawi language and Javanese language), and lexicalinterference of foreign language (English). Lexical interference influenced bybilingualism, the low of language loyalty, the prestige of source language andlanguage style, and the influence of mother tongue.
