Abstract

This study is about the difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions. The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions from English into the Indonesian language, and the causes of the difficulties. The type of research method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative research method. Data from this study was collected and obtained through tests and questionnaires. The subject of this study was 10 students from the 5th semester in majoring English Education at UNPRI Medan. Tests were distributed to the students to find out the student’s ability to translate idiomatic expressions, and what their difficulties, the results of translation were totally inadequate on 17%, inadequate on 19%, adequate on 11%, almost completely successful on 11%, and successful on 42%. After that, the researchers found the students’ difficulties in translating idiomatic expressions were lexical difficulty at 15%, stylistic difficulty at 28%, cultural difficulty at 28%, and 29% for grammatical difficulty. Based on the questionnaires the researchers found several factors influenced students' difficulties in translating idioms, firstly their lack of knowledge of idiomatic expressions, secondly, lack of vocabulary mastery, and thirdly, the students also rarely practiced expression idioms in speaking and writing. As a result, it is suggested that students study books, articles, papers, song lyrics, and movie subtitles in English to broaden their knowledge of idioms. They should also practice using idioms in writing and everyday conversation. Keywords: difficulties, causes, translation, idiom

Abstract

One of the skills that must be mastered in learning English is speaking. But many peopledo not have the confidence to speak English because of some problems suchaspronunciation, and vocabulary. One method that can improve students' speakingskillsisthe role-playing method. This study aims to determine the application of the role-playingmethod in improving students' speaking skills in speaking English in class IXSMPMarisi Medan. Researchers used the roleplaying method to improve students' speakingskills. The author uses quantitative research. The research subjects were gradeIXstudents. The author took one class used in the study consisting of 38 students. Afterusing the role-playing method, students can improve their speaking skills. This increasecan be seen from the results of observations and practice. Data collection techniquesusing documentation, questionnaires, and observations. The results of data processingshowed an increase in students' speaking ability which was applied by the role-playingmethod. This is evident from the results of the questionnaire. The overall resultsofrespondents' answers obtained strongly disagree as much as 43.9 %, disagreeasmuchas 161.4%, agree as much as 409.4%, and strongly agree 397.5%. Based on theresultsof this study, it can be concluded that the use of the Role Playing method canimprovestudents' speaking skills in English lessons. Based on the results of the study, therearesuggestions to be conveyed to teachers who will conduct English learning toconsiderthe use of learning methods, such as the Role Playing method which has beenproventoimprove students' speaking skills. Abstract

The goal of this review is to look into “Exploration of the Folklore Tongkat Tunggal Panaluan” as reading materials for high school students. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method in this study, which aims to describe systematically, actually, and factually using words and sentences. From January to October 2022, the research will be conducted. Interview techniques and data documentations were used to collect data.. Techniques for data analysis that use interactive analysis, such as reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research strategy consists Because of the mystical element in the stick, research from folklore “Tongkat Tunggal Panaluan” was formed, the stick contained the face carvings of seven humans and several animal carvings. Abstract

Students’ interest in reading comprehension was affected by the source of texts at the school. Student have low ability in reading comprehension because the students did not have various reading textbooks. The limitation of English reading book sources had affected the students’ motivation in learning English, especially in reading comprehension. Many students were not interested in reading comprehension bacause they thought that it was really boring. In according to overcome these problems faced by the students at school, this research aims to develop Folklore in Traditional Wedding Rituals from Java Island and how to How to design English reading text based on folklore in traditional wedding rituals from Jawa island. This research was conducted by applying qualitative descriptive method. The writers took the data by interviewing a cultural practicioner (Mr. M.S.), classified as an interviewee in this research. The writers interviewed a person who had understood weel about Traditional Wedding Rituals from Java Island, especially from central of Java. From the data it was known that there were some traditional wedding rituals from Java islan, such us Balangan Gantal, Wijikan, Pondongan or Kanten Asto, Tampa Kaya, Dahar Gembul, Ngunjuk Rujak Degan, Mapag Besan and Sungkeman. The writers designed English reading text based on folklore in traditional wedding rituals from Jawa island by preparing questions to the cultural practicioner, choosing the appropriate practiconer, discussing with the cultural practicioner, conducting interview to the cultural practicioner, writing down the interview result, translating the texts into English reading text, revising it, and finally it became an Englsih reading text that could be used by the English teachers and students. The data collection was done by reading the interview result, then they were made to be an English reading text. After carrying out this research, it can be conluded that folklore in traditional wedding rituals from Jawa island can increase the students’ interest in reading comprehension class and the students could get more motivation in joining the class.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out the aspects causing stress among the schools staff and how the principal of the school manage it. This research was conducted at Telkom 2 Vocational schools. Descriptive qualitative research design was used in order to collect the data. From the analysis of the data, it was found some facts, they are teachers' work-related stress was caused by their roles and responsibilities as teachers, as well as by their nature, behavior, and limitations as students. Non-work-related sources of stress at work include working hours that are viewed as excessively long by informants and a lack of family time. Complaints at the time of teaching that are felt in the form of dizziness, headaches, and tiredness are symptoms of work stress. Mind and body, daydreaming, and sighing looks Individual approaches, such as sharing a story or chatting with colleagues, time management by allowing children to express themselves, and organizational approaches, such as improving internal teacher communication organization through relationships with superiors, colleagues, and students, and providing support social support from the school through annual walks, are all methods of stress management.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the students in tenth grade at SMK Telkom 2 Medan's ability to use conjunction. The study's goal is to find out how well the students use conjunction and what obstacles they face. The tenth-grade students at SMK Telkom 2 Medan were the focus of the investigation. The research used qualitative method and analyze data. In collecting the data the researcher used test and interview. From the analysis of data, it was found that there were 4 (13,3%) students were good and categorized able, and 10 (33,3%) students were poor and categorized unable and 16 (53,3%) students were very poor and categorized unable. In this case, students were unable to learn use conjunction. It is concluded that analysis of students’ ability in using conjunction.

Abstract

This research is useful for increasing students' interest in reading through the local cultural reading text "Mbaba Belo Selambar". This research focuses on the meaning of mbaba belo selambar from Tanah Karo to make a reading text for students so they can be more interested in reading. This research method uses qualitative methods and there are 4 (four) informant subjects in it, consisting of tribal chiefs in Tanah Karo, the bride, the bride's family and the community. Data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this study show what is the meaning of mbaba belo Selambar in Kutambelin Village, Tiga Panah District, Tanah Karo Regency, designing reading texts through Mbaba Belo Selambar for students in Kutambelin Village, Tiga Panah District, Tanah Karo Regency. The results of this study also lead to students' interest in reading, the influence of local culture on students and researchers will design reading texts in English based on "Mbaba Belo Selambar" in Kutambelin Village, Tiga Panah District, Tanah Karo Regency. Abstract

This research is aimed to analyse grammatical errors in the written essays that consists of simple present tense and simple past tense. The sample member in this research is the eighth-grade students who attend Panca Budi school Medan where simple random sampling method is adopted to generate the participants. Qualitative and descriptive research methods are used as the research design. Documentation method is used as the data collection method because the data are the descriptive essays written by 40 eighth-grade students. The research results revealed that all 4 types of errors were found in the students’ essays such as omission, addition, misinformation, and mis ordering. Omission type of errors were known to be dominating with 92 times of occurrence, followed by addition errors with 70 times of occurrence, misinformation errors with 54 times of occurrence, and lastly, mis ordering errors with only 8 times of occurrence. Therefore, eighth-grade students of Panca Budi school Medan commit a significant large number of errors. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the leadership style of the principal of SD Negeri 173115 Sitompul. The method was used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. This research was used descriptive qualitative because the researcher described what kind of situationhappened in public schools, especially in terms ofthe leadership style applied by the principal at SD Negeri 173115 Sitompul .Interviews, obeservation and field notes was used in this research. The data were cooleected and interpredted based on the types of leadership style. From the research, it was found that the pricipal of SD Negeri 173115 Sitompul applied a servant leadership type, in which the implementation of this leadership is carried out by prioritizing a moral and familial approach.

Abstract

The study identified and analyzed the types of sentences found in the text and what types of sentences were the dominantly used. Researchers use qualitative descriptive research methods by using analysis documents to obtain the desired results. Researchers collected 88 sentences data. The result showed that first, the types of sentences are declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamative sentence. Declarative sentence consists of 18 data, interrogative sentence consists of 30 data, imperative sentence consists of 24 data and exclamative sentence consists of 16 data. Second, the data analyzed showed that the interrogative sentence is the most frequency dominant used, while the least frequency dominant is exclamative sentence.
