Abstract

This research examines Kartini in Kartini: Princess of Java through the lens of Judith Butler’s concepts of vulnerability and gender performativity. Butler argues that cultural norms and power structures shape individuals’ gender identities and render them inherently vulnerable to external influences. By applying Butler concepts to the stories in Kartini: Princess of Java, the article asserts that the characters not only conform to gender norms to gain recognition but also face vulnerability due to her position within societal structures. This research carried out in a qualitative framework. The analysis explored how the character performed gender roles and the implications of her actions in the social realm. The findings show that Kartini’s performative acts involves breaking free from the normative scripts assigned to women of her time. She confronts gender expectations through her outspokenness, challenging practices like early marriages and polygamy that perpetuate inequality. Her advocacy for women's education is a performative act that aims to disrupt the conventional roles of women and to open new possibilities for their empowerment. This performative activism is intricately intertwined with Kartini's vulnerability. She shares her inner struggles, aspirations, and conflicts, transcending the boundaries set by her society. Her vulnerability becomes a catalyst for social change, inspiring other women to join her cause and challenge existing norms. Kartini's willingness to embrace her vulnerability demonstrates authenticity and sincerity, making her advocacy relatable and impactful.

Then, the students who learned Contrastive Linguistics and Error Analysis (CLEA) and the lecturers who have taught CLEA were chosen to be the participants. The instruments used in this research were questionnaires both from student’s perspective and lecturer’s perspective. Student’s questionnaire consisted of 20 questions, and lecturer’s questionnaire consisted of 12 questions. The data collection was taken from 55 students and 8 lecturers who were given the questionnaire. Based on the results and discussion, it shows that dimension of “suit environment” from the lecturer’s perception, that the text in CLEA book is no longer suitable for this global era. Considering with Sustainable Development Goals, the CLEA textbook syllabus needs a revisiting to insert the SDGs theme in its reading text that is related with the 17 goals, such as: quality education, no poverty, zero hunger, gender equality, climate action, and many more. Since syllabus is guidance in achieving the learning objectives, it needs revisiting gradually to pursue the developing situation. The revisiting syllabus should consider both student and teacher as the practitioners of teaching and learning process. Variant categories of word classes are also found, such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, directional words, conjunctions, agreement words, and question words. Suggestions that could be considered in this research include creating an etymology dictionary or a dialect dictionary. Those two dictionaries are considered necessary because currently, the influence of other language might lead to convergence, and therefore documentation is needed for further study or the preservation of the language in the future

Abstract

The call for the implementation of Outcome-Based in Indonesia has been emphasized since 2019, highlighting the necessity for adjustments in the higher education context. In English academic writing classes, incorporating OBE principles presents challenges, particularly in the realm of assessment. The assessment process must effectively evaluate all abilities, skills, and knowledge specified in the learning outcomes. These challenges are further amplified by the large class sizes, resulting in suboptimal assessments of students' writing abilities. Therefore, Project Based assessment that aligns with OBE principles and assists academic writing lecturers in addressing the complexities of providing quality assessments to a multitude of students in Indonesia is of utmost significance. The Proposal Writing Course Universitas Wijaya Putra, consisting of twelve students from the English Department, utilizes the OBE-Project-based assessment method. This study aims to describe the students’ composition as the learning output based on the writing rubrics assessment. The analysis of the student’s proposals revealed a notable enhancement in various aspects, including the context, literature review, research design, and data. It is found that Project Based assessment that aligns with OBE principles significantly enhances their research writing skills and improves their academic achievement throughout the research process. analysis. The incorporation of project-based assessment in OBE in the courses holds great potential for elevating the academic performance of graduate school students engaging in proposal writing courses.
