Abstract

This study aimed to increase students' grade 9 student’s self-confidence in speaking English at one Junior High School in Jakarta. This study uses the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method which aims to solve the problem of students' lack of self-confidence in speaking English. This classroom action research uses the Kurt Lewin model. This study was conducted in 2 cycles where each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. In obtaining data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data were obtained through observation, while quantitative data were obtained through tests (pre-test and post-test). The results of this study found that the use of the role-play method had been successful with the criteria that 75% of students achieved the target score ≥ 75 based on the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM). The results obtained through the test showed that 80% of students had achieved the target minimum competency criteria score. In addition, the second criterion is that students become more active during the teaching and learning process, so the results of the observation show that by using the role-play method, students become more active and also confident in speaking English.

Abstract

This study investigates conversational implicature in the movie Uglies (2024) through a pragmatic analysis, focusing on generalized and particularized types. The analysis is based Levinson’s (1983) theory, which distinguishes between implicatures understood from general knowledge and those requiring specific contextual information. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing the observation method combined with non-participatory technique. Data were collected by transcribing and closely analyzing the dialogue, focusing on identifying the intended meanings beyond the literal words. The analysis method followed pragmatic identity method, which was applied to interpret the implied meanings in each identified instance. This research A total of 47 data points were identified and categorized, with 47% falling under generalized conversational implicature and 53% under particularized conversational implicature. The findings reveal that particularized implicatures are more prevalent in the movie, as the characters often engage in context-dependent dialogues to convey subtle meanings. The study highlights how conversational implicature serves as a tool for character development and thematic expression in the film. By analyzing selected data, this research provides insights into the use of language to imply meanings beyond literal expressions, contributing to a deeper understanding of conversational dynamics in movie dialogue.

Abstract

This study at STBA JIA seeks to cultivate students’ creativity and critical thinking by implementing Project-Based Learning (PjBL) through English drama performances. It was chosen as it offers students opportunities to enhance their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Likewise, English drama encourages collaboration, creativity, and a deep understanding of cultural and literary contexts, helping students connect classical themes with modern social issues. This drama project specifically utilizes Oscar Wilde's plays, including An Ideal Husband, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Lady Windermere's Fan and conducted in CGV Cinema Bekasi. This study covered several stages which proposed by Kemendikbud (2013), namely planning, rehearsals, and final performance, all of that were monitored and evaluated by lecturers. The findings show that English Drama Project effectively encourages active student participation in the learning process, raises collaboration, and improves management skill, language skill and critical thinking skill, and even gaining confidence and responsibility. However, problems such as time limits, a lack of acting experience, and insufficient facilities were experienced. Suggested solutions are more acting training and better group collaboration. These findings help to further the development of interactive learning methods in literature study in higher education, like STBA JIA.

Abstract

This research aimed to design and develop TOEFL-based vocabulary-building materials for students at IAIN Palangka Raya. The research addresses the need for specialized English instructional materials for TOEFL preparation. Existing TOEFL preparation resources are often generic and not tailored to the specific needs of Indonesian students. The purpose of this research is to create materials grounded in the KKNI framework to enhance students' proficiency in reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar. Data were gathered through needs analysis, reference studies, material development, expert validation, and tryouts using observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The developed materials include sequences of tasks designed to incrementally build the language skills required for the TOEFL. Expert validation and empirical try-outs confirmed that the materials effectively address students' needs and support TOEFL preparation. This research demonstrates a systematic approach to developing targeted instructional materials that fill a gap in available TOEFL resources. Using these materials is expected to improve students' lexical knowledge and lead to higher TOEFL scores, providing a model for data-driven development of instructional materials based on local contexts.
