Abstract

This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach to explore the types of figurative language employed by Ariana Grande in her interviews with Jimmy Fallon, published in June 2024, following Perrine’s (2018) typology of figurative language. The data collection process followed the observational method and note-taking technique, enabling systematic gathering of instances of figurative language while preserving the authenticity of spoken interactions. The analysis employed the referential identity method and the contextual meaning technique, focusing on how linguistic expressions relate to their external contexts and uncovering the meanings behind figurative language. A total of 38 instances of figurative language were identified across various types, including 4 similes, 7 metaphors, 5 personifications, 4 apostrophes, 4 metonymies, 3 symbols, 4 overstatements, 3 understatements, and 4 ironies. Metaphors emerged as the most frequently appearing type, reflecting the complex emotional states and experiences that Grande expresses, which resonate with her audience. Interestingly, no instances of allegory or paradox were found, suggesting that while the dialogue was rich in imagery and emotional depth, it did not engage in these more complex forms of figurative language. The findings underscore the expressive potential of figurative language in conveying nuanced interpersonal relationships and experiences.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of directive speech acts in Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine interview with Zach Sang, focusing on how commands, orders, requests, and suggestions shape conversational dynamics. Using George Yule’s (1996) classification as the theory, this research examines how language functions to influence and guide behavior in a media setting. The data source is the publicly available interview, and the research employs a qualitative descriptive design to systematically identify directive speech acts. Data was collected through observational method with non-participatory technique, and analyzed using the pragmatic identity method with contextual analysis technique, based on Sudaryanto (2015). Results show that requests, with 20 instances, were the most common directive, suggesting a preference for politeness. Commands followed with 16 instance, and suggestions appeared 15 times, indicating subtle influence, while orders were least frequent with 9 instances, highlighting sparing use of direct authority. These findings underscore how directive speech acts contribute to interaction flow and social dynamics in high-profile media contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the development of students' English-speaking skills and self-confidence by implementing a digital multimodal presentation project in an English-speaking class. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 31 students and one English teacher through classroom observations, reflective journals, interviews, and document reviews. The findings indicate that the multimodal approach helped students improve their speaking proficiency by integrating various digital tools, fostering creativity, and reducing anxiety. However, some students faced challenges in terms of technical difficulties and limited English vocabulary. Despite these obstacles, the digital multimodal project significantly contributed to building students' self-confidence in speaking English. This method is recommended for further use to enhance students' engagement and communication skills in the language-learning process.

Abstract

This research use code-switching and mixing, Merry Riana explores this in the audio episode "Curhat Maudy Ayunda Tentang Perempuan, Jesse Choi, dan Krisis Identitas." This podcast episode examines the obstacles of defining one's identity and surviving life. It talks about learning overseas, taking a break from a demanding work, and changes in lifestyle following marriage to Jesse Choi. To achieve this, the authors use a qualitative descriptive approach that is based on Poplack and Muysken's theories. Code mixing and code switching classifications, such as intra-sentential, tag, and inter-sentential switching, as well as insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization code-mixing, are then used to classify the data. The total number of data points from this episode was 100. The outcomes are as follows: The 87 code-mixing data consist of 84 (97%) insertion data, 1 (1%) congruent lexicalization data, and 2 (2%) alternation data. Additionally, only 13 code-switching data (100%) intersentential data were discovered. The podcast did not contain any instances of intrasentential or tag-switching. This study broadens our understanding of code-mixing and code-switching and emphasizes how crucial it is to examine contemporary media in order to understand how linguistic practices are evolving.

Abstract

The research investigates the effectiveness of the Reverso online application in improving grammar in narrative text writing among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Palangka Raya. The study compared the improvement in grammar abilities between the experimental group using Reverso and the control group using conventional methods. Data was collected through pre-test and post-tests, focusing on narrative writing abilities. Normality tests showed significant differences, necessitating non-parametric tests for further analysis. The hypothesis testing results indicated a significant enhancement in the experimental group relative to the control group, with a p-value of .000, which is less than the significance threshold of 0.05, or the post-test of class XI IPS 2 as the experiment group was 93.33 and the post-test of control group XI IPA 4 was 81.40. This suggests that the Reverso application had a positive effect on students' grammar improvement in narrative texts. The study concludes that the Reverso online application is effective in enhancing students' grammar in writing narrative texts. Based on the findings, suggestions are made for teachers to integrate similar technological tools in their teaching practices, for students to practice grammar using educational applications regularly.

The research employs a descriptive qualitative method to identify and categorize idiomatic expressions within the text. This research uses semantics by using Makkai's theory. The data presented taken from Robert Thier's Wattpad novel Storm and Silence; 106 data were found. The result of this research is that tournure idioms are the most prevalent 48 (45%), followed by phrasal verb idioms 19 (18%) and phrasal compound idioms 14 (13%). Pseudo-idioms 11 (10%). Interestingly, the irreversible binomial idiom contains 8 (8%), whereas the incorporation verb is 6 (6%). The result highlight the significance of idiomatic expressions in enhancing character development and thematic depth while presenting challenges for readers unfamiliar with idiomatic expressions. This research contributes to understanding idiomatic expressions in contemporary literature, particularly on digital platforms like Wattpad.
