Abstract

A teaching strategy uses methods to achieve specific goals. To improve students' speaking skills, new strategies like discussion and debate are needed. The goal of the study was to determine how the lecturer used these strategies, what challenges the students and the lecturer encountered, and how the strategies used to teach public speaking at IAIN Palangka Raya affected the students. The study design employed by the researcher was a case study and the qualitative method. Three instruments were utilized observation, interview, and documentation for collecting the data.  The subject was a lecturer and the students 4th semester of English education in public speaking at IAIN Palangka Raya. The researcher obtained the lecturer used discussion and debate. Those strategies were used alternately in each meeting in public speaking class. Before meeting, the students had got the topic from the lecturer and the students should prepare their ideas to show in front of their friends and lecturers. Three problems that the researcher found, there were linguistic factors, psychological factors, and external factors.  The students also had improvement in several things such as speaking elements, motivation, and self-confidence.

Abstract

Many students struggle to form simple sentences for everyday conversations. Vocabulary is the main foundation of language, and the richness of a person's understanding greatly determines their ability to capture meaning, understand context, and connect ideas in a text. Teachers must pay special attention to gain students' motivation to expand their vocabulary. Therefore, the research aimed to explore the implementation and investigate students in word-search puzzle games as a learning medium to assist students in reading classrooms. The researcher used qualitative research with a case study design. Five students of junior high school students were involved in this research. Research data was collected through interviews and observation. The data was analyzed by thematic analysis. The study found that teachers implementing a learning strategy following the theory of Safadi and Rababah encourage student engagement and improve reading skills by using the Word Search Puzzle Game as a learning medium. There are four stages to implementing this strategy. This strategy can encourage students to learn so that they can explore their reading skills. It can be concluded that integrating the Word Search Puzzle Game into reading learning can increase students' cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement and prove that interactive and exciting learning media can help achieve learning.

Abstract

This research explores the intersection of project-based learning (PBL) and technology-enhanced language education, specifically focusing on the implementation of PBL through Google Sites to enhance students’ travel writing skills. The research aims to evaluate both the implementation of PBL in travel writing and students’ perceptions of this learning model. Utilizing a case study methodology, data were collected through observations and questionnaires. English for Tourism Industry students were divided into four groups, each consisting of five students, and each group created one Digital Travel Writing project. Findings indicate that all groups effectively followed three key steps in the PBL process: project preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The resulting Digital Travel Writing projects focused on Central Java, Bali, East Java, and West Nusa Tenggara. Questionnaire responses indicated that most students enjoyed the PBL activities. In conclusion, the implementation of project-based learning using Google Sites was successful in enhancing students’ abilities in the Travel Writing course.

Abstract

This article explores the implementation of Narrow Listening (NL) in an Extensive Listening (EL) course at a private English Education Department in Indonesia, addressing a gap in research regarding student engagement. Guided by Krashen's theory of input and repetitive listening practices, the study examines how NL can aid learners in achieving fluency and automaticity. Employing a case study approach, data were collected through observations of 42 multilingual students aged 18 to 19 during their first semester in the 2023/2024 academic year. Analysis revealed themes of both positive and negative behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement among students. While many demonstrated increased motivation and comprehension, some expressed anxiety and discomfort with certain learning tasks. The findings suggest that NL can significantly improve listening skills, boost student motivation, and facilitate a conducive learning environment, ultimately leading to better language acquisition outcomes. This study contributes valuable insights for educators aiming to enhance best practices in tertiary English education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the professional development needs of primary school English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research aims to explore teachers' perceptions regarding their language proficiency, pedagogical strategies, and subject knowledge needs through semi-structured interviews. Participants included two EFL teachers selected based on their teaching experience. Data were collected via recorded interviews, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes related to teachers' professional development needs. Findings indicate a strong demand among teachers for continuous development in language skills, innovative pedagogical approaches, and deeper subject knowledge. The study underscores the importance of tailored professional development programs that address these needs to enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes in primary EFL education. The study's discussion highlights the implications for future research on the professional development (PD) needs of primary EFL teachers.

Abstract

Improving speaking fluency remains a challenge for EFL students in secondary schools, highlighting the need for innovative teaching methods. Fluency involves expressing oneself naturally, without frequent pauses or hesitations, and participating in conversations confidently. Educational YouTube videos, designed to teach or share knowledge, engage viewers through both visual and audio elements, making them effective learning tools. This study explored the use of YouTube videos to enhance speaking fluency among EFL students. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with 65 participants divided into an experimental group, using YouTube videos, and a control group, using educational podcasts, over the course of one month. Results indicated a significant improvement in speaking fluency, with the experimental group scoring 655 compared to the control group's 455. The findings suggest that using YouTube videos can be a more effective tool for improving speaking fluency than traditional methods. This study provides a reference for future research in the field, encouraging further exploration of innovative approaches to language teaching and fluency enhancement.

Abstract

Teaching speaking skills is a significant challenge for teachers, especially in a vocational school environment. This study aims to identify the strategies used by teachers in teaching speaking at SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan. The subjects of this study were three English teachers and 35 eleventh grade students from the Broadcasting class in the 2023/2024 academic year. Using descriptive qualitative method, this study collected data through interviews and classroom observations. The results showed that teachers used a variety of strategies, including storytelling, class discussions, and the use of social media, which effectively improved students' motivation, active participation, and speaking skills. Storytelling engages students emotionally, helping them build vocabulary and public speaking confidence. Class discussions encourage active participation, improving students' communication and critical thinking skills. Meanwhile, social media allows students to practice English in real-life contexts, making learning more interactive and fun. These strategies are proven to not only improve students' speaking ability, but also foster their personal and social development. This comprehensive approach aligns with the demands of the vocational curriculum, preparing students with the essential communication skills needed for professional and social growth.

Abstract

The abrupt transition to online instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted educators to implement a wide range of innovative teaching strategies. This scenario becomes even more complex when English is taught as a supplementary subject in the first year of pharmacy programs. A primary concern in online English language instruction is how to maintain student engagement and encourage continued use of the target language. However, understanding students' learning motivation is a crucial factor in establishing a conducive environment that will motivate them to continually study English and achieve proficiency in the four language skills. This study aimed to determine whether interactive, technology-mediated task-based language teaching can enhance students' motivation and confidence and explore their perceptions of the tasks. Employing a qualitative approach, the study relied on observations and questionnaires as the primary data collection methods. The findings demonstrate that interactive, technology-mediated tasks significantly increase students' motivation and confidence for learning English. Additionally, the paper provides examples of how technology-mediated tasks can be designed to promote learners' productive use of English. Finally, the study discusses some anticipated challenges in implementing technology-mediated task-based language teaching in online instructional contexts.

Abstract

One of the languages used for communication is English. Speaking fluently in English is one of the most important components. Learning to speak was another essential component of learning a new language. Students needed to choose the most effective learning strategy to help them got more knowledge and to develop their speaking skills. Therefore, this research was carried out to know the strategies of learning that were used to develop speaking skills by English Language Education students at Muhammadiyah university of Prof. Dr. Hamka. To collect the data, the writer used questionnaire as quantitative data. The results showed that there were six learning strategies used by students namely metacognitive strategies, compensatory strategies, cognitive strategies, affective strategies, memory strategies, and social strategies. Related to this, the most frequent strategies implemented by the students were metacognitive strateegies (80%), compensatory strategies (79.38%),  and the cognitive strategies (78%).

Abstract

This research aims to design and develop a tourism digital dictionary for students in Persada Husada Indonesia Vocational School in Bekasi. Using Research and Development method, this research was conducted in five stages of ADDIE proposed by Branch (2009) including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stage. The instruments used are questionnaire, interview, observation, and documentation. The dictionary is developed referring to Jackson (2002) which covers macro (front matter, body, appendices) and micro (arrangement and type of information) structure. The dictionary was validated by two experts both in content and design with no revision which later was implemented in hotel department classes. The result of the implementeation and evaluation from the teachers showed that the dictionary is beneficial not only for students during teaching and learning process but also during internship for self-learning media.
