Abstract

The limited vocabulary and lack of word variety in translations cause vocabulary mismatches between students. This research aims to ascertain the relationship between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate Shakespeare's poem entitled A Fairy Song. This research uses quantitative techniques to collect and analyze data. Translation proficiency (Y) is the dependent variable in this investigation, while vocabulary mastery (X) is the independent variable. Random sampling was employed to get the research sample data Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar students made up the study's population. The study sample consisted of 38 students. The researcher comes to the conclusion that there is a weak association between the two variables based on the Pearson correlation coefficient value of 0.274. This association has a significance value (sig. 2-tailed) of 0.096. This number exceeds the widely accepted statistical significance threshold of 0.05. This suggests that there is no statistically significant relationship between translation and vocabulary skills.

Abstract

English is one of the main subjects that must be mastered by students to keep up with the development of science and technology. To anticipate the development of science and technology, it is necessary to improve English language skills in vocational high school students. This paper presents a descriptive qualitative study on the implementation of reward and punishment in English learning in a vocational high school, namely SMKN 1 Jabon. The researchers used observation and questionnaires as instruments to collect data. The participants in this study were an English teacher and 36 students. The researchers implemented three types of rewards and one type of punishment: social reward, token reward, material reward, and presentation punishment. The results of the questionnaire indicate that the students have agreed and accepted well the rewards and punishments implemented by the teacher. They feel happy with the praise given by the teacher with good words such as good job, amazing, great, and happy when given gifts, congratulations, and extra points as rewards.  Therefore, they become enthusiastic and compete in learning English. In addition, they also agree with the punishments given to students, such as being given advice, and warnings, standing in front of the class, cleaning the class, running around the field, and others. Therefore, they are discouraged and do not want to repeat their mistakes.

Abstract

This research examines the enjoyment and anxiety of learning English experienced by junior high school students in rural areas. This research uses quantitative methods, with data collection using a questionnaire distributed to 54 class VIII students. The findings show that a positive classroom environment and a friendly teacher who always provides support can increase students' enjoyment in learning English. On the other hand, student anxiety stems from self-doubt about their abilities and fear of negative evaluation. Statistical analysis, including independent sample t test, revealed significant differences between levels of enjoyment and anxiety. This makes teachers implement teaching strategies that can reduce anxiety, such as providing emotional support and using varied teaching methods. This study focuses on understanding emotional factors in language learning and provides practical recommendations for improving the quality of education in school environments, especially in rural areas.

Abstract

The study focuses on the assessment strategies implemented by novice teachers at an English language course institution. Through descriptive qualitative research, the study investigates the types of assessment strategies used by these teachers and how they implement them in the classroom. Using open-ended questionnaires and observations, data were collected from three teachers with 1-2 years of teaching experience. The findings reveal that all three teachers predominantly used formative assessment, which includes exercises, written tests, and oral questions to gauge student understanding during the learning process. Each teacher employed different methods tailored to their students’ needs, emphasizing the importance of formative assessment in improving student learning outcomes. The study concludes that while the specific strategies vary, the common goal among the teachers is to assess students’ progress systematically to enhance learning. This research contributes to the ongoing discussion of effective assessment practices in English language teaching, highlighting the challenges and successes of novice teachers in this context.

Abstract

This study aims to identify students' responses to the use of a project-based approach in teaching writing narrative text. This research was conducted in a junior high school in Cimahi involving 23 students of grade VIII as the research subjects. The method used was qualitative research with a data collection technique through the questionnaire. The data were analyzed both qualitatively using Miles & Huberman (1992) data analysis framework and quantitatively only in sum and percentage. The results showed that the use of a project-based approach was positive toward students' motivation and involvement in the writing learning process. Students feel more motivated and challenged to write because they can work collaboratively in groups and have the opportunity to develop their creative ideas. Meanwhile, students' negative responses to the use of the project-based approach were that they were still confused about the demands and steps to be taken in completing the project.  This caused them to feel less confident in completing the project well. The data from the questionnaire shows that using project-based learning in teaching writing provides benefits in learning English writing skills. Therefore, using project-based learning in teaching narrative text writing can improve students' writing ability.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is crucial in language learning as it improves vocabulary, grammar, and general language proficiency. However, a report points out that Indonesian students' English proficiency remains lacking, partly because the proportion of Higher-order Thinking Skills (HOTS) distribution in textbooks is low. This study attempts to analyze the dominant categories of cognitive process dimensions and examines the proportion of cognitive process dimensions between Lower-order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and Higher-order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the textbook “BAHASA INGGRIS Work in Progress” for grade 10 senior high school. Utilizing a descriptive quantitative method and Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, 67 questions from 6 chapters in the textbook were explored. The results show that 59.7% of the reading questions focused on HOTS, with the Analyzing being dominant at 45.58%, Understanding at 22.05%, Evaluating at 17.65%, Remembering at 10.29%, and Creating at 4.48%, with no representation in the Applying. The study concludes that the textbook effectively integrates HOTS, aligning with the educational principle and addressing the need for balanced cognitive skill development in Indonesian senior high schools, primarily in English education. Future research could explore how teachers utilize and improve these materials to enhance HOTS in classroom settings by involving classroom observations and interviews.

Abstract

This research is a R & D research aimed at producing drama teaching materials based on AI script generator for use in drama learning for students of the English literature study program UMN al-Washliyah, developing drama teaching materials based on AI script generator to improve students' understanding of writing drama script by using technology, testing the validity and testing the effectiveness of AI based script generators. The result from the research is mean value before using AI script generator-based drama material = 32.5 and mean value after using AI scripts- based drama materials = 42.5 so there is an increase of 10. The validity of the material on the test of the drama material based on AI script generator obtained a 70,5% percentage result with a good category, so it can be concluded that the development of the AI based script material generator deserves and effective to be used in the drama course.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the translation techniques applied to phrasal verbs in the subtitles of The Devil Wears Prada. The qualitative approach is employed to analyze the translation of phrasal verbs, using the primary theory by Molina and Albir’s (2002). The study categorizes phrasal verbs into three types: intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable, with three examples from each category, consisting of nine verbs. The study identifies the use of six techniques from Molina and Albir’s eighteen proposed methods: (1) one Reduction, 3 (three) Established Equivalent, 3 (three) Literal Translation, (1) one Modulation, (1) one Generalization, and (1) one Substitution. This study on translating phrasal verbs in The Devil Wears Prada provides key insights into the translation techniques used in the film, offering practical guidance for translators and advancing our understanding of cross-cultural adaptation in subtitling.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Wordwall.net in vocabulary learning for junior high school students. Vocabulary is fundamental in language acquisition, but traditional methods often fail to engage students, leading to poor outcomes. This research employs a qualitative case study approach to examine how Wordwall.net enhances vocabulary learning by making the process more interactive and enjoyable. Conducted in a junior high school in Karawang, the study involved four grade VIII students and used interviews, observations, and document analysis as data collection methods. The findings reveal that Wordwall.net significantly improves student engagement and vocabulary retention. Teachers played a crucial role in selecting appropriate activities, preparing lessons, and addressing challenges post-learning. Students responded positively to the platform, citing increased interaction, ease of use, and a more enjoyable learning experience. Despite its advantages, challenges remain, including the need for appropriate selection criteria and effective post-learning reinforcement. The study concludes that Wordwall.net is an effective tool in enhancing vocabulary learning, fostering a more dynamic and interactive classroom environment. Additionally, it highlights the importance of ongoing teacher support and training to maximize the platform's potential and address any limitations that may arise during its use, particularly in different educational contexts.

Abstract

Speaking is a vital skill in language learning, and a student's motivation significantly influences their willingness and ability to improve their speaking Achievement. This study aimed to determine the significant correlation and influence of students' motivation on their speaking achievement. A quantitative research approach with a correlation design was employed. The population consisted of 246 eleventh-grade students at a private high school in Palembang. The researchers used a cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. Data were collected using the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) questionnaire and a speaking test. The results showed no statistically significant correlation between students' motivation and their speaking achievement, as the obtained correlation coefficient (r-obtained) of 0.106 was lower than the critical value (r-table) of 0.339. Additionally, the two-tailed significance level was .550, indicating that the p-value (.550) exceeded the threshold of .005. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H01) was accepted.
