Abstract

A podcast is a digital multimedia file that can be downloaded to a portable media player, phone, or other device via the internet. There are many audio podcast that can be used in learning listening, one of them is British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast. This research aimed to describe how the contribution and the problems in using British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast in EFL students’ listening skill. This research was conducted at IAIN Palangka Raya. The type of this study was a qualitative approach. The data was taken from interview and documentation. Eight EFL students and two lecturers in IAIN Palangka Raya were the subjects of this research. They were determined by purposive sampling technique. The findings reveal that the use of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast give positive contribution to students’ listening skill. Based on the result of the research using British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast can develop students’ listening skill, vocabularies and they will be familiar with British accent. The problems in using the BBC podcast faced by the students were unfamiliar pronunciation, lack of vocabularies, and the speaker who spoke fast. Keywords:  Podcast, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) podcast, EFL students, listening skill

Abstract

This community service activity aims to introduce basic English morphology through the teaching of conjunction materials to students in the private secondary school MTS Hidayatul Insan Palangka Raya. The importance of basic English morphology for these students prompted the selection of this topic. Teaching is conducted using an interactive approach involving discussions, exercises, and language games to reinforce students' understanding. The activity involves eighth-grade students as the main subjects, with evaluations conducted before and after the intervention to measure their improvement. Results show significant improvement in the correct use of conjunctions in sentences and a better understanding of simple sentence structures. Additionally, students demonstrated enthusiasm and active participation during teaching sessions, indicating increased interest in learning English. In conclusion, teaching conjunction materials with an interactive method proved effective in introducing basic English morphology to students at MTS Hidayatul Insan Palangka Raya.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is essential for effective language learning and communication. This research investigates “the effect of canva based flashcards on the vocabulary mastery” of VII class students at MTs Raudhatul Jannah Palangka Raya. This research using quantitative methods and quasi-experimental design, with a sample of sixty students split into experimental class and control classes. The canva based flashcards only used in experimental class. Data was collect from the pretest- posttest and analyzed with a t-test. Pretest scores averaged 61.36 for experiment class and 69.29 for control class. Post test scores increased to 85.88 for experiment class, and 76.69 for control classes. The findings indicate a significant effect of canva-based flashcards on vocabulary mastery. Thus, that's possible be inferred that canva based flashcards effective in significantly increasing studentsvocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research study investigates the correlation between self-motivation, interaction, and satisfaction in the context of blended learning. The regression model, using self-motivation and interaction as predictors, significantly predicts satisfaction levels. The model explains approximately 74.5% of the variance in satisfaction, with self-motivation contributing 24.5% and interaction contributing 50%. The findings are based on a dataset of 57 participants, and Pearson's correlations indicate significant positive associations between self-motivation, interaction, and satisfaction. However, the study has limitations, including a small sample size and potential biases, which should be considered when interpreting the results.

Abstract

This study aims to find out what moral values are represented in an EFL textbook for Indonesian Junior High School students: “When English Rings a Bell”. This study used a qualitative research. This study was be focused on the English textbook "When English Rings a Bell" produced by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia for eighth grade junior high school students. The data are collected using content analysis methods. The findings revealed the total frequencies from chapter one until chapter thirteen from the least to the most apparent in the English Textbook “When English Rings a Bell”. The result of the data also showed the most frequently moral values that appeared in this English textbook are Discipline (20%), Hard work (16%), Love to Read (9%). These three words the most apparent in the particular chapter of the English textbook and they related to the eighteen moral values in the table.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe strategies for mastering English, the main thing that usually has to be mastered is Vocabulary. This type of research is a qualitative approach. Data obtained from observation, interviews and documentation. The subjects of this study were second semester students of the English study program at IAIN Palangka Raya. Then, the object of this research is learning strategies and also factors that contribute in increasing the vocabulary used by English students. They were selected by purposive sampling technique. Interviews were used to determine learning strategies and contributing factors in increasing students' vocabulary. The findings of this study indicate the following points: (1) students use strategies to increase vocabulary, especially during the Pandemic. The strategies include: direct strategies, namely memory strategies, cognitive strategies and compensation strategies. While the indirect strategies are metacognitive, affective strategies and social strategies. Although there are several strategies in learning, here the informants only use cognitive, memory, and metacognitive strategies. Each student has a different strategy that is tailored to their own desires. This strategy is very helpful for students because they can adapt it to their preferred way of learning. (2) in increasing students' vocabulary, there are also contributing factors. The chosen factor is also the same as choosing a learning strategy, because this factor also has a role that is almost the same as the strategy. These factors are usually used when they are studying, namely when they have free time so that even though they are relaxed, they can still get vocabulary.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat  ini merupakan kegiatan pendampingan kepada mahasiswa Program Studi bahasa Inggris dalam pembuatan media pembelajaran sebagai salah satu media yang digunakan untuk mengajar di daerahb Remote Area. Kegiatan ini dilakukan bersama mahasiswa jurusan Tadris (Pendidikan) Bahasa Inggris Semester 3 di Institut Agama Islam Negeri Palangka Raya. Pengabdian ini dilakukan bertujuan agar mahasiswa dapat menjadi lebih kreatif dan inovatif untuk membuat media pembelajaran sebagai penunjang mengajar. Selain itu tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu agar mahasiswa memiliki kemampuan untuk dapat membuat media pembelajaran yang menarik dengan berbagai kondisi dan situasi. Adapun metode yang digunakan adalah pendampingan kepada mahasiswa melalui beberapa tahapan antara lain : 1) Tahap Perencanaan (menyiapkan materi) 2) Tahap Pelaksanaan (memberikan pendampingan secara langsung), 3) Tahap Evaluasi (hasil laporan kegiatan). Berdasarkan hasil kegiatan yang telah dilakukan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan ini dapat membuat peserta menjadi lebih kreatif dan inovatif dalam membuat media untuk bahan ajar di remote area.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to ascertain how the story face method affects students' reading comprehension of narrative texts. The study was carried out at MA Hidayatul Insan Palangka Raya's class X. One class was picked by the researcher to be the experimental class. Purposive sampling was the method utilized to gather research data by choosing 16 students and administering pre- and post-tests. The story face method was used by the experimental class to learn English. The paired sample t-test method was used to examine the data gathered for this investigation. According to the study's findings, adopting the story face method significantly improves students' reading comprehension of narrative texts. The data analysis reveals that the sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00<0.05, which means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. As a consequence, there is an average difference between the pre-test and post-test scores, indicating that the story face method has an impact on how well students understand narrative texts.

Abstract

Globalization is emerging in a digital era, making it easier to access information, share, and exchange things via social networks, such as Instagram. The purpose of this study is to analyze students’ perceptions of Instagram as a platform to motivate EFL learners. The researcher assumes Instagram is an easy platform and can be used to learn English anywhere and anytime without time restrictions. The research was conducted on the students of IAIN Palangka Raya. Researchers used quantitative methods to solve research problems and employ questionnaires and interviews as data-gathering instruments in this study. For the English Study Programs at IAIN Palangka Raya, a research sample was chosen by purposive sampling in which the sample should be the third-semester students who were also active users of Instagram and active followers of accounts that teach English. This study found that 76% of TEFL students are motivated to learn English using Instagram due to its attractive and easy-to-use application design, fun activities, and improved English vocabulary, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis langkah-langkah utama yang terlibat dalam desain kurikulum merdeka untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan adalah library research, yang melibatkan analisis dan sintesis data yang dikumpulkan dari sumber-sumber tertulis seperti buku, jurnal, artikel, dan dokumen-dokumen lainnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan kata kunci yang relevan seperti "desain kurikulum merdeka," "pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris," dan "pendekatan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris" dalam pencarian sumber-sumber yang relevan.Langkah-langkah penelitian meliputi identifikasi tujuan penelitian, pencarian sumber-sumber yang relevan melalui basis data, perpustakaan online, dan situs web akademik, serta penyaringan sumber-sumber berdasarkan relevansi dan kualitasnya. Sumber-sumber yang dipilih kemudian dibaca dan dianalisis secara cermat untuk mengidentifikasi tema, temuan, atau pendekatan yang berkaitan dengan desain kurikulum merdeka untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris.Data yang dikumpulkan dari sumber-sumber tersebut kemudian disintesis untuk mengidentifikasi kesamaan, perbedaan, atau pola yang muncul dalam desain kurikulum merdeka untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Laporan penelitian disusun dengan menyajikan langkah-langkah yang dilakukan dalam penelitian kualitatif library research serta temuan-temuan yang relevan.Melalui penelitian ini, diharapkan dapat memberikan pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang langkah-langkah utama dalam desain kurikulum merdeka untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini juga mendorong evaluasi kritis terhadap sumber-sumber yang digunakan dan pemilihan metodologi penelitian kualitatif library research yang diterapkan. Hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi kontribusi penting dalam pengembangan kurikulum merdeka yang efektif untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dalam konteks pendidikan saat ini.
