Abstract

There are two objectives of this study. The first is to observe the students’ perception on teaching english vocabulary through Cooperative Learning, and the next objective is  to know students’s ability in mastering vocabularies. The method which used by the researcher is Classroom Action Research with the technique is Think Pair Share (TPS). The objective of this research is also to identify the benefits that the students obtained from that technique. The respondents of the research were seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Cimahi in the school year of 2018/2019. In this research, the researcher implemented the research on two cycles for seven meetings. Each cycle consist four steps. They are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In the first cycle, there are four meetings. In first meeting, the researcher gave the pre-test to the students. That is for knowing the student’s ability in the first. Next meeting, the researcher do the first treatment, and second treatment was done in third meeting. So, in the last meeting of cycle 1, the researcher gave the post-test to the students. While, those are three meetings in cycle 2. In the first meeting, the researcher gave the third treatment. This is for continuing the treatment in cycle 1. After that, in the second meeting, the researcher gave the fourth treatment. So, in  the last meeting of cycle 2, the researcher gave the post test for the students.  The results of the study that the teaching english vocabulary through Think Pair Share (TPS) technique could help students’ vocabulary in learning english because they can share the knowledge about English, especially in vocabularies with the other friends. Abstract

This research has purpose to prove the effectiveness of using debate in teaching speaking at eighth grade of SMP Bina Mulia Mandiri West Bandung academic year 2019/2020. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) using two cycles explained through planning, implementing, observation, and reflection on every cycle. The outcome of the research proved that there was an improvement on the students’ speaking skill. It could be proved by the result of the test in this research. The Minimum Score that must be gained by students (KKM) of English lesson was 70. The students mean score was 50 at the first pretest, and 65 in the first post test, and in the second post test the mean of the students score was 85. In addition there were 3 students (8.8%) who exceed the minimum score on pre test. There were 9 students at the first pretest (26.47%) who surpassed KKM. There were 31 students at the second pretest (91.18%) who exceed KKM. Then, from the result of observation and interview the students stated positive responses. The students can be more active and improve their confident for uttering their ideas. The writer conclude that debate technique was effective in teaching speaking English. Keywords:  Speaking, CAR, Debate Technique

Abstract

Studies on the domain of language education indicate that gender stereotypes still exist in teaching-learning media for instance English as a foreign language (EFL) textbook. Since the study within gender stereotypes in EFL textbook has dominantly compared the representation of female and male or men and women, this present study focused on investigating women representation in terms of domestic roles, hobbies, dressing, and social expectation in EFL textbook for Senior High School students published by Ministry of National Culture and Education (MONEC). This study used critical discourse analysis (CDA) to investigate both visual and textual that represent women in term of domestic roles, hobbies, dressing, and social expectation on the selected chapters in the EFL textbook mandated by MONEC as one of the teaching-learning media. Abstract

Charlotte's Web novel is a novel by Elwyn Brooks White, the author of a famous Stuart Little novel. It was first published in Canada in 1952 by Fitzhenry & Whiteside Limited, Toronto. The purpose of this paper is to determine the use of simple past tense contained in the Charlottes’s Web novel. The data was taken from chapter 1 to 5 because these chapters are the orientation part of the story that introduces the characters in the story. Descriptive quantitave methods was applied since the results ofthis study are numbers and percentage which is explained in detail. It was found that there are 237 sentences of simple past tense existed in the chapters, consisting of 165 simple past tense verbal, 52 simple past tense nominal and 20 simple past tense verbal mix nominal. In other words, this chapters mainly discussed the story verbally. Keywords:  Grammar, Novel, Simple Past Tense

Abstract

In learning English, most of the students think that English is a difficult skill. Given that, the writers want to improve the students’ speaking skills in English by using the Unscripted Role Play Teaching Activity. The data from classroom action research is collected by quantitative data (oral test) as main data and qualitative data (notes and documentation) as supporting data. The outcomes show that students have improved in English. It proves by ab average score that the students achieved in cycle 1 and cycle 2. In Cycle 1, the average score was 63.28 with 11 students (31.42%) achieved the standard minimum score whilst the average score in Cycle 2 is 78,28 with 30 students (80.71%) achieved the standard minimum score. In conclusion, the unscripted role-play teaching activity has improved the students’ speaking ability. Keywords:  Unscripted, Role Play, Language Competence

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the students' responses in learning writing descriptive text through the two-stay two-stray technique. This research used a qualitative method and the design was descriptive qualitative. The respondents of the research were 23 seventh grade students of Junior High School in Cikadu. The data were obtained from questionnaires and interviews. The results of the research revealed that writing descriptive text using the two-stay two-stray technique can motivate students to join learning activities,  can reduce the time to understand the material, and they braver to express their idea. Keywords:  Two-Stay Two-Stray, Writing, Students’ Response

Abstract

Deixis is the study of deictic or indexical articulations in language exchanges, prefaces, and monolog like you, presently, today. Deixis can be named as a unique sort of linguistic property, managing increasingly natural syntactic classifications of individual, place, time. The purpose of this research are to describe the types and the most dominant of the deictic words used in the Donald Trump Press Conference Coronavirus Task Force. The researchers designed this research as descriptive qualitative research. The data was gathered from a speech of donald trump press conference and using theory Yule (1996). The result showed that there are three types of deixis, they are Personal Deixis, Time Deixis and Place Deixis. This research found that there are three types of deixis in press conference, they are Personal Deixis 23 occurances, Time Deixis 8 occurance, Place Deixis 1 occurance. Based on this analysis it can be concluded that personal deixis is the most dominant types of deixis used than the other types. Keywords:  Deixis, Donald Trump, Coronavirus

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the communication strategies used by English Senior High School Teachers in Bengkulu Tengah. This study belongs to mix method which involved questionnaire and interview to collect the required data. Questionnaire was distributed to 21 teachers who were teaching at the senior high school 2020/2021 academic year. Then interview, was employed to enrich the data. The data were analyzed by using Dornyei & Scott’s (1997) taxonomy of communication strategies. The results show that the English teachers in Bengkulu Tengah more prefer to use communication strategy in the form of prefabricated patterns, nonlinguistic mean and stalling or time gaining. They also try to use those communication strategies in good order from change the word that the student unfamiliar with to familiar word, then they use the body gesture to stress the meaning and last, they use code mix or partial translation to make students get the meaning. The use of those communication strategies is underlying two main reason which are solving the speaking problems and making interactive speaking situation. Abstract

Deixis is the study of how to analyze or understand a word related to the person, place and time in a sentence. This study aims to find out the total and categories of deixis in a narrative text entitled "An Icy Monster". This study uses descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researchers read the story of narrative text carefully to find the deixis. After that, the deixis are classified into categories of deixis by Levinson (1983:54) in (Utara et al., 2019). The last, the most deixis found in the story are analyzed according to the theory. The result shows that the total deixis found in the text is 42 deixis, and there are three categories of deixis found, namely personal deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. The most deixis occur in the text is third person of personal deixis. Thus, this study appearance that the aplication of third person of personal deixis in the narrative text is important. Keywords:  Deixis, Narrative text, An Icy Monster

Abstract

English in universities is taught as a general course in non-English majors, as in the case at the Nursing Department, Muhammadiyah Ponorogo University. Ideally, the content presented should be adjusted to the department, which is referred to as ESP (English for Specific Purpose). Perceptions from several parties are needed to find out how important English is for a career as a nurse and the right material according to their needs. This research aimed to analyze the students’ needs on English for Specific Purposes materials, particularly at the Nursing department, University of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo. The researcher used questionnaire as the research instrument. The subject were the sixth semester students of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo Nursing Academy in the academic year 2018/2019 with the total number of 90 students in three classes. The researchers decided to take only 20% of the total students, namely 15 students for all classes. The results of this study indicate that in general, respondents believe that English is very important to be taught in the Nursing Department. English is taught as a general course, but students expect material relevant to their assignments in the workplace.
