Abstract

This study aims to analyze the type of Grammatical Cohesion using Halliday and Hasan (1976) theory. This research applied Descriptive qualitative method, while  the data were taken from "The Princess and The Pea" short story text. This research is carried out by reading the whole text, finding and collecting the references used in it, then analyzing the number of references identified and categorizing them into three types: Personal, Demonsrative, and Comparative references. The results show that there are a Grammatical Cohesion used. From the data that have been analyzed, there were one Comparative reference and it shows that there are 33 Personal references and the most Grammatical Cohesion of reference found in the data was Demonstrative reference in amount 42 references. From the findings, it can be concluded that Demonstrative reference ‘the’is the mostly used by the writer to refer a particular thing in the story. It means that in a fiction short story the use of Demonstrative reference as part of Grammatical Cohesion is required to presuming a definite meaning. Keywords:  Grammatical Cohesion, Reference

Abstract

Textbook has an essential role as teaching material, especially in learning speaking English. Teachers should use a suitable textbook in their teaching process to meet learning objectives. This study aims to analyze speaking activities based on cognitive domain in the Indonesian ELT textbook endorsed by Indonesian Ministry of Educational and Culture entitled Bahasa Inggris, Think Globally Act Locally untuk SMP/MTS Kelas IX [English for Junior High School Grade IX]. The data was analyzed with content analysis method and collected using documentary technique. The findings show that there were three speaking activities such as reading aloud, role play, and presentation task. Also, there were 57 speaking activities that focused on cognitive domain category. Besides, all categories of cognitive domain did not apply in this textbook. There are only four categories that were applied such as remembering (C1), applying (C3), analyzing (C4), and creating (C6). However, understanding (C2) and evaluating (C5) level categories did not realize in this textbook. Thus, this textbook was not quite good to fulfill learning objectives and the distributions of cognitive domain for the levels. Keywords:  Speaking Activity, English Textbook, Cognitive Domain, Content Analysis

Abstract

Currently, the development of modern technology in Indonesia is getting better, especially in terms of education which makes learning media very varied. One of them is YouTube as a learning medium has become a more popular medium for students. This study explores students' perceptions of using YouTube as a medium for learning English in Junior High School. This research is limited to 4 aspects of students' perceptions; Effectiveness, Attractiveness, Motivation, and Relevance. This study uses a qualitative method, with questionnaires and interviews as a research instrument. This research was carried out at one of the State Junior High Schools in Sidoarjo, which implemented YouTube as a medium for learning English. Data analysis used descriptive analysis. The results showed that many students agreed that YouTube is an effective learning medium. Moreover, it is not only effective, YouTube is attractive that can motivate students to learn because it contains words, pictures, and videos, but also an appropriate medium to deliver the learning materials. It can help students improve their English skills. However, some students seem to object to using YouTube as a learning medium since it takes up a lot of internet quota and makes them not focus on studying. Keywords:  Students’ Perception, Youtube Learning Media, Junior High School Students

Abstract

Pandemic covid-19 gave big impact to teaching and learning process, government has stated during pandemic , teaching and learning process conduct with online strategy. All off silabus school adopted new strategy to implemented the goverment stated. This journal, explained about the process of teaching and learning English and learning to memorized which was carried out online during the Covid -19 pandemic. Where the problem is that some students do not understand the material, therefore the researcher tries to find and analyze data about these difficulties. The questions of this research are (1) What are the students' problems in online learning? (2) What are the obstacles and constraints in using memorization techniques?.  The aims of this study is to explained barriers and obstacles using memorized method during teaching and learning online process .  This study used a qualitative descriptive, data take from other literatur in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Ummul Qura and own research at SMP Advent Naripan Bandung. From the two questions used, the researcher gets the results that show the difficulty of the students. Forms of barrier and obstacles that are obtained are, (1) students' difficulties in remembering, (2) lack of  students concentration, (3) students are lazy to memorize, (4) students lack enthusiasm in memorizing, (5) limited quota, (6) consistency of networking, handphone problem (telecommunication aspect), (7) students late attendance to the online learning process, (8) lack of student focus, (9) dislike of english subject ( Mindset of the Students ). Keywords:  Barriers and Obstacle, English Learning, Memorized Technique

Abstract

This study investigates the translation methods used to translate figurative languages in the novel from English to Indonesian and the translation quality assessment. The main theory used to help find the answers in the process of analyzing are Newmark and Nababan et al., along with other supporting theories. Qualitative descriptive and focus group discussion are used as a research method. The results showed that the most frequent translation method is literal translation (51.47%), free translation (23.53%), idiomatic translation (18.38%), and word-for-word translation (6.62%). In terms of translation quality assessment, overall data implies high accuracy level, high acceptability level, and high readability level. Keywords:  Figurative Language, Translation Method, Translation Quality Assessment

Abstract

Presupposition is one of pragmatics part that should be noticed by everyone because it is essential to know the assumption or interpretation of utterance or written form. Thus, this study aimed to identify the types of presupposition in the headlines of Jakarta Post Newspaper. Qualitative research with content analysis was employed by the researcher to undertake this research.The instrument was a checklist. The corpus was headlines of Jakarta Post Newspaper starting from 1st of February 2022 until 28th of February 2022. The data were analyzed by using several stages namely collecting, reducing, displaying and concluding data. The result showed that five types of presupposition found in headlines of Jakarta Post Newspaper namely existential, lexical, factive, structural, and counterfactual presupposition. The dominant one is existential presupposition. In addition, there is not found non-factive presupposition because the Jakarta Post shows the factual data.

Abstract

This study aimed to know how are the Students’ Perceptions of using Google Translate as media for assisting independent learning in Vocabulary class. This study was qualitative research methodology, by study case. Subject of the study in this research was the first semester students of Vocabulary class English Education Study Program of IAIN Palangka Raya. The total of the students are 57 students and the researcher took 11 students as the subjects of this research by Purposive Sampling. For the data collection; first, the researcher used the observation checklist. Second, the researcher continued with the interview instrument. The interview has 14 questions with 3 topics; students’ personality, students’ motivation and students experience. Next, researcher analyzed the data as qualitative data from interview which has been collected and using documentation to strengthen the data such as pictures screenshot of interviews in WhatsApp and Zoom Application. Based on the research problem, it can be concluded that the using of Google Translate as a media for assisting students independent learning in vocabulary class are very helpul, effective and students also feel their vocabulary increased and they motivated in the teaching learning process. And considering the conclusions drawn above, it implies that the use of Google Translate can be used to help or support independent learning and also beneficial media for students, Google Translate help them to translate English material quickly and easily. Keywords:  Perceptions, Google Translate, Vocabulary, Independent Learning, Case Study

Abstract

Morphology is needed in writing. Most of students have low understanding on it. Therefore, this study was to analyze types of  inflectional and derivational affixes at the eighth grade students’ writing skill of recount text at SMP N 2 Wonosari in the academic year of 2021/2022 and to describe the students’ problems in using affixes. The data were collected by documentation, interview and questionnaire. The researcher used Miles and Huberman’s theory to analyze data. The trustworthiness of the data used theory triangulation. The result showed there were 7 types of inflectional affixes –ed, -s, irregular form, -‘s, -en, -er and suppletive plural. There were 6 types of derivational affixes Verb to Noun, Adjective to Adverb, Noun to Adjective, Adjective to Noun, Verb to Adjective, and Noun to Noun (-er, -or, -ion, -ment, -er, -ly, -y, -al, -able, -ous, -ic, -ful, -ry, -ness, -dom, and –ship). The problems happened to the students in using affixes such as the students had difficulties in distinguish free morpheme and bound morpheme, the students were still confused to determine the affix and root, the students felt difficult on the words that consisted of derivational affixes. Abstract

The focus of this research was to explore the students' perceptions about using the Cake English Apps to improve their speaking abilities. This study involved 14 students from class XI at SMK Giri Taruna Bogor. The qualitative descriptive method was used by the researchers in this study. Information was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The majority of the students, according to the research's findings, said that Cake English Apps gave more opportunities to practice their speaking abilities; they are interested in enhancing their speaking skills with the Cake English Apps, they can use the Cake English Apps to practice speaking as much as they like, and they like to choose the speaking-related content to practice their speaking skills. Four students walk in to be interviewed about using the Cake English Apps to improve their speaking skills; the majority of them are familiar with several of the features of the Cake Apps and understand how to use them. Abstract

English is a native language of some countries, a foreign language for many countries, and an international language for the whole world. English textbook is one of the most important learning and teaching materials in learning and teaching this language to succeed. This article aimed to examine students’ perception of their high school English textbook toward high school national exam papers. The article also aimed to examine students’ perceptions of English textbook that they want so that their needs for English, like daily activities and high school exams, are fulfilled. The study employed a qualitative design. 20 students participated in the study. The findings show that the current textbook is out of date. All the students wanted a new textbook providing them with the daily needs of English and the keys to passing their high school exams. A bigger sample size might be used in a future investigation. It is strongly suggested that the impact of English textbook on students' learning achievements be investigated. It is also suggested that teachers' attitudes toward English textbooks be examined. Keywords: Cambodia, English Textbook, Grade-12 Student, High School Exam
