Abstract

This research is aimed to discover the deixis used in Taylor Swift’s song entitled New Romantics. This study's objectives are 1) to describe the types of deixis used in the lyrics of the song New Romantics by Taylor Swift; 2) to describe the meaning of the deixis reference in the song's lyrics New Romantics by Taylor Swift. A descriptive qualitative is used to investigate the data—the researcher analyzes the data using data tables to generate a better data result. Based on the finding, it was found that three deixes were found in analyzing the song; persona deixis, time deixis, and place deixis. The type of deixis most used in the song lyrics is person deixis, which consisted of 59 data.

Abstract

Researchers in developed countries have explored various types of motivation effects on students' English language learning, yet these are not broadly studied in developing country contexts, especially in higher education institutions. Hence, the objective of the current study is to examine four types of extrinsic motivation in order to evaluate which one is the most effective factor for motivating students to study English better than before. A quantitative method was employed, and data was collected through a survey questionnaire. 105 students were randomly selected from a university, which is one of the best private universities in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The findings show that all four types of extrinsic motivation were crucial in being catalysts to push students to learn English better than before. The findings also revealed that external regulation (M = 4.89, SD = 0.17) was the most important factor among the other three types of extrinsic motivation. The results are vital for teachers of English and relevant stakeholders to motivate students to learn English. Finally, similar topics with a larger sample size should be conducted at other institutions across the country. Abstract

A teacher’s teaching style is the way he/she conducts class instruction an the classroom environment, every teacher has their own belief, ideology, and teaching style. In the end, teaching style may affect learning motivation of the students in the classroom.  This study aimed to  investigate how the students perceive their EFL teacher's teaching style and how the style affects students' motivation in English learning. The study was a qualitative study, the type of qualitative study used was a case study. The data collected from questionnaire that  distributed to 13 students of an islamic senior high school, the interview data from 5 sudents used to verify the data. The results indicated that the students’ EFL teacher used facilitator style, and the students’ perceived that it was good. Most of the students said that the way their EFL teacher teaching affected their learning motivation. The researcher conclude that a teacher teaching style could motivate or demotivate students’ learning motivation. Through this study, the reseacher suggested to all EFL teachers in the future to pay more attention to their teaching styles, in order to boost their students motivation in learning and the learning objectives will be attained well. Keywords:  Case Study, Learning Motivation, Students’ Perception, Teaching Style

Abstract

This research aims to explore types of figurative language found in Taylor Swift’s album and elaborate their meanings. The data source is taken from 9 (nine) songs by an American female singer, Taylor Swift. This study's main theory was adopted from the figurative language theory of Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963). The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. It begins with selecting several figurative sentences from nine song lyrics, then analyzed all. After analyzing, the authors recorded the related data. The results revealed that there are eleven kinds of figurative languages found out of the twelve or the total of the figurative language theory namely simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, overstatement, and irony. Keywords:  Figurative Language, Song, Album

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the types of figurative language and the translation procedures applied in the translation as well as to find out the translation quality assessment based on Newmark’s and Nababan et al’s theories. Descriptive qualitative research is the method used in this study. The result shows that there are 100 sentences that have figurative language, they are :metaphor 21%, hyperbole 25%, simile 34%, personification 18%, and idiom 2%. The translation procedures includes compensation 18%, expansion 8%, through-translation 39%, naturalization 1%, transference 8%, synonymy 9%, and transposition 17%. Finally, the outcome of the translation quality assessment indicate that 1 data is less accurate, less acceptable. Whilst, 2 less readable. Abstract

Pragmatics is part of the branches of linguistics, and in pragmatics we can learn implicatures. The purpose of this research is to analyze the dominant implicature and maxim violations contained in “Madagascar 2” movie script. This research used descriptive qualitative method, and the script was see from the internet. The type of implicature being studied is the conversational implicature. The conversational implicature arises because of the violation of one the four maxims, namely the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relationship, and maxim of the way. In this research, there were 25 implicatures ound from the movie script. The result is a quality maxim has 5 words, a maxim quantity has 9 words, a maxim relationship 7 words, and a maxim manner has 4 words. The implicature function is reflected in the purpose of the speech spoken by the speaker to the interlocutor during the conversation. Speech act are divided inti four, namely assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive. From the above results, the dominant function of the speech act implicature used in the film “Madagascar 2” is the implicature function of expressive speech acts. Keywords:  Speech Acts, Implicature, Madagascar 2 Movie Script

Abstract

Student engagement in learning to write is neglected. Indeed, students' engagement plays a crucial role in the writing classroom. In the writing classroom, students are expected to be able to write simple text. Discovery Learning is a constructivist learning method that engaged students actively in learning to write. Therefore Discovery Learning is expected to enhance students' engagement. This present study aims to explore students' engagement in the Discovery Learning method-assisted factual report text. This current study used a qualitative research method with a basic interpretative study to offer descriptive accounts to understand a phenomenon utilizing data acquired through interviews, observations, and documentation. The obtained data were analyzed by thematic analysis. This study was conducted at a vocational school in Karawang in a class of eleven-grade and involved five students in collecting the interview data. The findings found that there are three phases that potentially cope with students' cognitive engagement, behavior engagement, and emotional engagement. It consists of stimulation phase, data collection phase, and data process phase. The simulation phase engaged students to obtain writing ideas, the data collection phase engaged the student to write collaboratively, and the data process phase engaged students to write completely. Abstract

This study aimed to found out students’ perception and practice in using dialogic reading strategy. This research used qualitative method and case study approach. The participant took from three secondary school students in Karawang. The data of this research collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The result of this study found out that dialogic reading strategy can engage student in reading comprehension such as dialogic reading makes students more understand about context of the text, it increase students vocabulary, and it make students more active and confident in learning English. Keywords:  Dialogic Reading, Reading Comprehension, Student Perception

Abstract

Reading has developed into a critical tool for education, particularly in the teaching and learning processes, and it is now considered as a standard practice. Reading comprehension is the process of constructing the meaning of reading by integrating essential facts that are important in the educational process and students' achievement in school. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of students' perceptions of teaching reading comprehension skills through the use of a conversation strategy provided via WhatsApp. The participants in this study are 35 students in the ninth grade at SMP Unggulan Al - Amin Cimahi. Depending on the results of the student questionnaire, the researcher concludes that students' reactions to the implementation of teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts using WhatsApp data are favorable, with a total of 78 percent of positive responses and 22 percent of negative responses to the questionnaire. Keywords:  Reading Comprehension, WhatsApp

Abstract

Motivation is crucial in the learning process. Motivation is also support and satisfaction in the serious attempt to reach the goal. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not there is a significant relationship between students' motivation to learn to English and their speaking achievement at SMKN 1 Ngasem Kediri. The researcher selected 67 participants as a sample from a total population of 702 students. SPSS version 26.0 was used to analyse the data. The tool was a questionnaire with 26 items and one question in a speaking assessment. The researcher used descriptive statistics and Kendall's Tau calculation to analyse the data. According to the research findings, students' motivation to learn to English was classified as extremely poor (value = 0,193). The value result revealed that the probability level was 0,024. It is possible to claim that 0,024 0,05 indicated that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Thus, in SMKN 1 Ngasem Kediri, there is a very low significant correlation between students' motivation to learn English and speaking achievement. As a consequence of various variables, such as a lack of sample to the population, students' potential or naturally intelligent, and many intelligence characteristics to speak English effectively, the outcome is a very low correlation. Keywords:  Correlation, Learning, Motivation, Speaking, Achievement
