Abstract

In digital era, seesaw application becomes alternative platform used to connect and learn. It also contains updated contents as sources of speaking practices. The research was to investigate the significant effect of Seesaw Application on students’ speaking skills in the eleventh grade at SMK Kesehatan Kaltara. The method of study was quasi-experimental. The sample of this research was the eleventh-class nursing A as the experimental class and the eleventh-class nursing B as the control class selected through a purposive sampling technique. The research instrument was classified as pre-test and post-test and used the Independent Sample T-test to analyze the data. This research showed a significant difference between students taught using the seesaw class application and those taught using conventional methods in teaching speaking. As a result, the hypothesis test determined that the significant factor was smaller than 0.05, and the resulting t-test (2.367) was more effective than the t-table (2.045). This study implied the optimalization of application to support the students’ Speaking learning.

Abstract

This research investigated the reading comprehension difficulties and the factors that contributed to reading difficulties faced by second-semester students in the English Department at Borneo Tarakan University. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, the research integrated quantitative data from a TOEFL reading comprehension test and qualitative insights from interviews with selected students. The TOEFL test results revealed that a significant proportion of students struggled with basic reading comprehension, with 45.71% failing to meet the A2 level of the CEFR. Specifically, students found "finding definitions from structural clues" to be the most difficult skill, while "recognizing the organization of ideas" was the easiest. The qualitative phase explored the factors contributing to these difficulties. Students cited vocabulary limitations, concentration issues, and varying levels of motivation as key internal challenges, while external factors included teaching methods, background knowledge, and environmental support. The findings underscored the need for targeted interventions to address these diverse challenges, emphasizing the importance of a supportive learning environment and effective teaching strategies in enhancing reading comprehension skills among students.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the significance of effects of mind mapping on student’s writing abilities. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The research sample consists of two classes selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data was collected using writing tests administered during pretest and posttest to measure students’ writing abilities. The results indicated that the mean difference in the control class is higher than that in the experimental class. This is because the use of mind mapping is most effective when used with actively participating students. In contrast, in this study, students in the experimental class were less active during the learning process. On the other hand, in the control class, students actively played online an online game called Roblox. The Roblox game helped students expand their English vocabulary, which potentially aided their writing. From this study, it can be concluded that mind mapping is still effective in helping students improve their writing skills, although it was not maximized in this context. The results would be more significant if the students were actively engaged in the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the problems faced by students in speaking English, focusing on linguistic, psychological, and motivational challenges. Speaking is a crucial skill in English language learning, yet many students struggle due to limited vocabulary, difficulties in constructing sentences, and pronunciation issues. Psychological barriers such as lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and low motivation further hinder their speaking abilities. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 37 Grade 11 students and interviews with 5 selected participants from SMAN 1 Tarakan. The findings reveal that students’ difficulties are multifaceted, encompassing linguistic issues and deeper psychological concerns, compounded by a lack of early exposure to English and disinterest in the subject. Addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach involving targeted practice, a supportive learning environment, bridging programs, and engaging teaching strategies to enhance students’ speaking skills and motivation in learning English.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of the basic skills in English that is quite difficult to master especially for students. Therefore, in teaching reading comprehension, an interesting teaching strategy such as KWL strategy is needed. The purpose of this study is to find out the significant effect of KWL strategy implementation on descriptive reading comprehension of junior high school 7th grade students. The research method used was pre-experiment method. The population of this study were seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan with a sample of class VII-10 as many as 29 students. The research instruments used were multiple choice and true-false tests in the form of pre-test and post-test. In addition, the results of the data analysis obtained were processed using the SPSS version 25.0 program. The results of data analysis showed that the average pre-test result was 57.44 and the average post-test score was 78.89. The Shapiro Wilk Test result of 0.965 is higher than 0.05, which means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that teaching descriptive text using KWL strategy is proven effective in improving reading comprehension of grade 7 students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan. Keywords: KWL Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in the listening skills of eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Malinau, which used the 2013 Curriculum, compared to those at SMAN 3 Malinau, which adopted the Merdeka Curriculum. A causal-comparative research design was employed, with a sample size of 100 students selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments included listening tests and interviews, in which the listening test questions were adapted from Collins' TOEIC listening skills. Due to the non-normal distribution of the data, the Mann-Whitney test was utilized to determine the differences between the groups. The results revealed a significant difference in the listening skills between the two groups. The mean score for students at SMAN 1 Malinau, which implemented the 2013 Curriculum, was 241, placing them at the B1 Intermediate level according to the CEFR levels. In contrast, students at SMAN 3 Malinau, who learned English under the Merdeka Curriculum, had a mean score of 185.4, also within the B1 Intermediate level but notably lower. The Mann-Whitney test results showed a p value of 0.001, which was less than the significance level of 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference. Furthermore, the effect size was calculated at 0.3339, indicating a medium level difference between the groups. This disparity in listening skills could be attributed to differences in the learning systems, with the 2013 Curriculum being more systematic, compared to the Merdeka Curriculum being more flexible. Abstract

This research analyses school culture and governance in SMPN 7 Tarakan and the practices, habits, and management that create a conducive learning atmosphere. It underlines the importance of school policies, engagement in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, a healthy learning environment, and facilities management for students to be engaged and succeed academically. Adopting a qualitative approach based on observational data, the authors establish a link between orderly school rules and disciplinary and structural order but suggest that ethnically diverse communities may benefit from looser structures. The study emphasises the need for sufficient facilities to boost student motivation and engagement in academic and extra-curricular activities. In conclusion, this study offers a possibility to view the school within quality education and students' personal growth by having an integrative perspective — defining a concept of doing justice for educational quality.
