Abstract

At this time the use of English has become part of modern human communication habits. Almost all existing linguistic aspects also often switch in English as a variation of language use. Even so, the use and understanding of good and correct English is still very necessary to be taught to students so that they have a good understanding of the use of English. One way to practice English comprehension is through the use of English videos. Videos in English provide opportunities for students to understand more broadly how the language is used in everyday life. However, in fact there are still many students who still have difficulty understanding the meaning and use of English sentences when watching English videos. Therefore this study examines students' perceptions of difficulties in understanding the meaning and use of English when watching English videos. The research method used is qualitative through a descriptive approach. The informants in this study consisted of several students who attended English classes by watching English videos. Data obtained through learning observation and interviews. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusions. The results of the study showed that students experienced various difficulties when understanding words or sentences from the English videos they watched, such as the use of foreign vocabulary that they had not encountered before, fast dialogue which made it difficult for students to digest the intent of the video conversation, students experienced obstacles in constructing meaning. and descriptions of scenes making it difficult to understand the context of sentences, lack of understanding of students in connecting vocabulary into an ambiguous sentence, and limitations of students in exploring the storyline of the video shown. To overcome this difficulty problem, English teachers need to provide appropriate teaching solutions so that students can better understand the meaning of English video dialogue so that they can build skills in constructing good and correct student sentence patterns.

Abstract

This article investigated and examined filler words' types, functions, and factors in students' speech while converting the written language to spoken language at the English department of Universitas Negeri Makassar in the pedagogy of speaking class.  Subjects are non-native English speakers but EFL students. This article uses qualitative research techniques. The data were collected from classroom observations, interviews, and transcription. The transcriptions were interpreted and grouped using the theory of Rose (1998). The occurrences of fillers were analyzed by the idea of Clark and Tree (2002), and the causes and function of fillers were analyzed by the theory of Kharismawan (2017) and Duvall et al. (2014). The findings showed that: (1) The students produced lexical and non lexical fillers while converting the written language to spoken language.  (2) Fillers appear at the beginning, middle, and near or the end of the utterance.  (3) The findings showed that the students produced fillers as hesitation devices, empathizing devices, mitigating devices, editing terms devices, and time-creating devices. Besides, a word cannot be categorized as a filler if it stands or works as a conjunction in an utterance.  (4) Lastly, this research found that the filler causes were divided attention, infrequent words, and nervousness.

Abstract

The study examined whether there was a significant difference between pupils taught using the tenses periodic table and those who were not. The pre-experimental design of the study included one group pre-testing and post-testing. Eleventh-grade Multimedia 2 students comprised the study's sample population. The paired sample t-test was utilized to investigate the data during analysis. The values for normality and homogeneity were 0.216 (0.05) for normality and 0.383 (0.05) for homogeneity. The study showed a 99% improvement between the pre-test and post-test results, with the pre-test mean score being 32.97 and the post-test mean score being 65.78. The results indicated that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It indicates that the tenses periodic table is suitable for assisting eleventh-grade students of SMKN 4 Tarakan to enhance their ability to use straightforward present and future tenses.

Abstract

The lexicon of a language is a crucial part of its linguistic structure. If students lack a thorough comprehension of vocabulary, their proficiency in English will be adversely affected. However, students should prioritise improving their ability to regulate and use words. This study aimed to determine if there is a distinction in vocabulary proficiency among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan when taught using audio textbooks as a learning medium compared to traditional media. The research findings indicate that students who received instruction using audio textbooks had a significant disparity in their vocabulary proficiency compared to those taught using conventional textbooks. Consequently, listening to audiobooks might prove advantageous for students in enhancing their language proficiency. Teachers at SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan and other schools are contemplating using diverse technological media, such as audio textbooks, to aid pupils in acquiring language skills. This is being undertaken in an attempt to build innovative teaching approaches.

Abstract

This research aims to prove whether the scanning technique is effective in teaching reading comprehension to students. This research used a pre-experimental research design and took one class, 9.1, as the sample. The analysis showed that the scanning technique greatly contributed to students' comprehension of reading advertisement texts. This can be seen from the increase in students' scores in the pre-test and post-test. The average score in the pre-test was 58.52 and increased to 74.07 in the post-test. Then, the data from both tests were analyzed using the significance parameter, and the results showed that the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.00, which means the sig. value (2-tailed) 0.05. Following the testing criteria, the results showed a significant increase in students' achievement in reading comprehension by using the scanning technique before and after the pre-test and post-test were conducted. This means that the scanning technique is effective and can be applied in grade nine of SMP Negeri 9 Tarakan to teach students reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to analyze translation errors and difficulties based on the implementation methods used by the students. This research applied a type of qualitative research with a case study model. The sample of the research consisted of six interviewees, consisting of three students from class Al and three others from class A2 of the sixth semester at the Department of English Education, Borneo University Tarakan. The instruments were the interview guide and documentation (students' academic reports). In the process of analyzing the translation, the researcher used the translation method based on Newmark's theory. The results showed that the students only used two methods to translate the text the word-for-word translation method and the free translation method. The research results indicated that the students who used the free translation method produced different translation results due to their creativity and understanding of similar contexts. Students also had difficulty with the use of free translation in determining the correct grammar and context for the sentence. On the contrary, the users of the word-for-word translation method have similar translation results among students who refer to the literal word translation method, most of them also have translation results that are out of the context of the sentence in terms of the literal meaning of the source language to the target language. Students also expressed difficulties with word-for-word translation, with students struggling to find the context of the sentence and the correct use of grammar for their translations.

Abstract

This paper aims to improve students' listening comprehension by implementing a structured instructional program that emphasizes three critical elements: Listening for Gist, Inferring Meaning, and Detecting Signposts. The primary goal is to identify educational strategies that are effective and can significantly enhance students' academic performance and listening abilities. The study addresses a significant gap in previous research by offering a comprehensive framework that integrates multiple aspects of listening comprehension, thereby contributing to the existing literature. This framework often isolates these skills. The program aims to enhance students' listening scores and cultivate a more profound comprehension of spoken language by implementing a targeted approach. The research utilizes a classroom action research design involving a cohort of 40 students who participated in three distinct instruction cycles. Each cycle focused on A specific listening component, which involved using a combination of active listening techniques, contextual exercises, and signpost identification activities. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the instructional strategies and the progression of the students, pre-and post-test assessments were implemented. In all three cycles, the results show substantial improvements, with average scores increasing from 60 to 75 in Listening for Gist, 65 to 82 in Inferring Meaning, and 70 to 88 in Detecting Signposts. These results indicate that the targeted interventions were effective in improving students' listening skills, as numerous students demonstrated a significant improvement in their ability to understand spoken texts. This research has implications for both educational practice and future research. The results emphasize the significance of a multifaceted approach to listening instruction, which motivates educators to implement comparable frameworks in their instruction. Furthermore, additional research could investigate the long-term implications of these instructional strategies on listening proficiency and their generalisability in various educational settings.
