Abstract

This study aims to analyze ASEAN's stance and approach, particularly in managing confrontational politics amidst major power competition, this article will also demonstrate ASEAN's attitudes and policies in navigating confrontational politics, including how ASEAN leverages its regional community norms to respond to such competition. Through this exploration, the author seeks to delve into the role and theoretical implications of ASEAN as a regional actor grappling with the management of political competition in the rapidly evolving East Asian and Indo-Pacific regionalism. The author used an impartial enmeshment concept and a descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that the intense geostrategic competition between China and the United States has placed ASEAN in a dilemma. ASEAN strives to maintain its centrality in the region by fostering fair, impartial, and neutral cooperation relationships. ASEAN bases its approach on the norms and principles of the organization, such as transparency, openness, inclusivity, good conflict management, and the importance of sovereignty and non-intervention (ASEAN Way). The ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) is one policy that reflects ASEAN's efforts to build a new framework of cooperation based on its own rule in the region. However, this Southeast Asia organization faces several challenges that can threaten its position. Keywords— ASEAN, Indo-Pacific, Impartial, Enmeshment, Geostrategies

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, APEC member countries faced major challenges in achieving infrastructure development goals due to the COVID-19 pandemic impacting various aspects of people's lives and the economy, thus they looked for a way out. This article will use the theories of International Cooperation, International Development, and Dependencies. Issues will be discussed through qualitative research methods and analysis of secondary data sources. In overcoming this issue, APEC carried out the continuation of the plan of APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040, Experience Exchange, and the Belt Road Initiative. The cooperation that was carried out resulted in assistance in facilitating economic cooperation and regional integration. Even so, the cooperation that was actually carried out was planned even before the COVID-19 pandemic and was only carried out more actively to overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that was present. Abstract

Although religion has never been absent from international relations, since the Iranian Revolution, the end of the Cold War, and the events of 9/11, the international community has renewed interest. Questions centered on the role of religion in peace and conflict, the compatibility of religious laws and norms with different government systems, and the influence of religious actors on various issues. Reliance on Enlightenment assumptions, which associated "religion" with the irrational, magical, or emotional, led many to regard religion as inappropriate for the public sphere and a key factor in causing conflict. On the other hand, the same assumptions lead to the association of the "secular" with reason, proper forms of government, and peace. Some scholars challenge such a dichotomous framework. Scholars who wish to avoid broad generalizations and problematic assumptions about religion must move beyond Enlightenment assumptions and approaches that treat diverse religious communities, actions, and ideas as inherently “good” or “problematic.” To do so, scholars must reflexively engage with religion, paying attention to their ontological assumptions and the consequences of those assumptions for religious and political analysis. In addition, scholars must place the practices, principles, and identities of individuals and religious communities within a broader historical and geographical context to understand the important factors that inform their ethical framework. There are several approaches concerned with interpretation, practice, and ethics, including neo-Weberianism, positive ethics, securitization theory, and the relational dialogical approach. These approaches provide alternatives to essential ideas about religion and explain why and how religious practitioners choose some possible actions over others. Abstract

Minilateralism is a concept of international relations that involves a small group of countries collaborating to solve problems or achieve common goals. In practice, minilateralism does have weaknesses. One risk is that this can be exclusionary and exacerbate power imbalances, potentially prioritizing short-term interests over long-term goals. Nevertheless, the benefits of minilateralism outweigh its drawbacks. Where minilateralism is a smarter and more targeted approach, namely bringing in the small number of countries needed to be able to have the greatest impact in resolving a particular problem. This is the magic number for minilateralism, which of course will vary greatly, depending on the problem. In the case of the Iran Nuclear Agreement of 14 July 2014, the concept of minilateralism showed its magic. Where tensions that have lasted for more than four decades between the United States and its allies and Iran have succeeded in achieving common interests to produce an optimal agreement. Abstract

This study analyses international cooperation, both bilateral and multilateral, in the establishment of Indonesia's new capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN). The study utilizes the theoretical frameworks of international collaboration and national interest to examine the dynamics that underpin these partnerships. A qualitative research methodology was employed, using data obtained from literature reviews and interviews. The results indicate three key insights. Initially, worldwide collaboration in the IKN project constitutes a commitment combining governmental bodies, the corporate sector, and global institutions. These interactions can be classified into form of bilateral and multilateral kinds of collaboration. Secondly, Indonesia's collaboration with partners from Asia and Europe focus two major areas: infrastructural development and ecologically sustainable practices. Asian nations have a robust interest in infrastructure projects, whilst European partners emphasize environmentally sustainable initiatives in the development of the new capital. Third, notwithstanding their participation in IKN, the economic and political objectives of Indonesia's partners from both Asia and Europe seem to transcend the initiative. Their main interest is to improve political and economic relations with Indonesia, frequently emphasizing investments in sectors like mining and infrastructure beyond the Kalimantan region. This study enhances the academic discourse regarding the patterns and modalities of international cooperation in Indonesia, providing insights into the strategic motivations of Indonesia's worldwide partners concerning the IKN project. Abstract

The peace process of regional dispute is handled with various processes and the sides who are concerned about the conflict, including the Vatican’s aid by using its peace diplomacy. The Vatican knew that mitigating the regional dispute had to face several challenges. However, the process and efforts to mitigate many areas of regional dispute are still the Vatican’s belief that peace becomes part of human rights and universal values. By observing methods based on the issue of regional dispute, this paper purposed to analyze the Vatican’s peace diplomacy during Pope Francis’ leadership. The analysis finds that mitigating regional disputes using a religious approach and the role of the Catholic church and Supreme Pontiff can effectively rehabilitate the conflict and finally turn into expected results based on negotiation. However, the Ukraine-Rusia dispute still creates brain-drain for the Vatican, including several regional disputes in Asian territory. The unresolved dispute indicates that the religious approach still needs aid from the other side. Therefore, the Pope, the Catholic church, and the rest of the world are still using proper diplomacy and strategy to fulfill the goal of the future of global peace.
