Abstract

This study examines the political hegemony of Islamic orthodoxy in the Abbasid Dynasty and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) through a comparative analysis using Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony. The research aims to analyze how religious orthodoxy is constructed through the interaction of political legitimacy, religious authority, and the production of discourse, as well as how these mechanisms shape the position of theological groups outside the mainstream. Employing a library research method with comparative, historical, and conceptual approaches, this study finds that the Abbasid Dynasty relied primarily on state power and official orthodoxy during the Mihnah to establish theological authority, whereas NU has developed religious orthodoxy through civil society networks, including pesantren, educational institutions, da‘wah activities, and political engagement. Despite these differences, both cases demonstrate that the sustainability of orthodoxy depends not only on formal political authority but also on the ability to generate social consensus and legitimacy. The findings indicate that the political hegemony of Islamic orthodoxy plays a significant role in defining the boundaries of religious legitimacy and the acceptability of theological groups within Muslim societies.

Abstract

This research examines the integrated branding strategies employed by Ma'had Uthman bin Affan, a premier Islamic educational institution in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, to increase applicant interest and institutional competitiveness. Using a descriptive qualitative case study methodology, we conducted in-depth interviews with institutional leaders, marketing personnel, and alumni, supplemented by documentary analysis and institutional data. Findings reveal four interconnected primary branding strategies: (1) Islamic value-centered brand identity construction, (2) strategic and consistent social media engagement and digital marketing, (3) institutionalized alumni networks functioning as brand ambassadors, and (4) continuous educational quality improvement as tangible brand proof. The institution achieved a 68.4% increase in applicants over the 2021–2025 period, with accelerating growth trajectories in recent years. Theoretically, findings align with Aaker's brand equity framework, demonstrating that integrated brand management transcends marketing communication to encompass organizational culture and service delivery excellence. The research contributes to educational marketing theory by establishing that value-based differentiation combined with authentic service quality creates sustainable competitive advantage in Islamic educational markets. Results have significant implications for institutional leaders seeking to strengthen market positioning while maintaining spiritual and academic missions. The study recommends that Islamic educational institutions adopt comprehensive integrated brand management approaches positioning Islamic values as central competitive differentiation mechanisms.

Abstract

Islamic education policies in Southeast Asia demonstrate diverse approaches influenced by the socio-political-religious contexts of each country. This research analyzes a comparison of Islamic education policies in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and Thailand through a qualitative literature study approach using content analysis and thematic coding methods. Findings reveal that Islamic education policies in these countries vary in ideological orientation, institutional structure, and implementation strategy. Indonesia implements integration within the national education system based on Pancasila values, Malaysia builds an Islamic education system based on strong Islamic identity awareness, Brunei implements a total integration approach with Islamic law, while Thailand faces pedagogical complexity within a Muslim minority context. This research recommends strengthening regional policy harmonization, enhancing teacher capacity, developing curricula responsive to local needs, and building cross-country collaboration platforms to share best practices. The research implications affirm that effective Islamic education policies must balance the universality of Islamic values, local cultural contextualism, and aspirations for educational modernization.

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct strategic management in Islamic education through the analysis of internal and external environments in the global era. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed at Khairu Ummah Nusra Integrated Islamic Educational Institution. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving institutional leaders, teachers, staff, and parents. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman and supported by SWOT analysis. The findings reveal that the internal environment shows strengths in human resource commitment and Islamic value-based organizational culture, while weaknesses are found in management systems and technological integration. The external environment provides opportunities through the increasing public demand for Islamic education but presents challenges in terms of institutional competition and rapid technological development. The study also finds that strategic management practices are still partially intuitive and not fully based on systematic environmental analysis. This study concludes that reconstructing strategic management through a comprehensive analysis of internal and external factors is essential to enhance institutional competitiveness in the global era. The integration of Islamic values with modern strategic approaches becomes a key factor in strengthening the sustainability and adaptability of Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digitalization has significantly transformed the landscape of education, including traditional Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This study aims to examine how pesantren negotiate epistemological tensions between tradition and emerging digital knowledge systems. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach based on library research, this paper argues that pesantren develop a hybrid epistemology by integrating classical Islamic scholarship (turāth) with digital learning practices. The concept of hybridity enables pesantren to maintain their identity while adapting to contemporary technological demands. The findings indicate that pesantren construct their epistemological resolution through selective adoption, cultural filtering, and contextual reinterpretation of digital knowledge. This hybrid model positions pesantren as resilient educational institutions capable of navigating the regime of digitalization without losing their foundational religious values

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internal and external environments and examine the implementation of strategic management at Cahaya Bangsa Islamic Boarding School, East Lombok, in responding to the challenges of the global era. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving five key informants, including institutional leaders, teachers, administrative staff, and parents. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by SWOT analysis. The findings reveal that the institution’s internal environment demonstrates strong commitment from human resources and an organizational culture grounded in Islamic values. However, weaknesses remain in management systems and technological integration. The external environment presents opportunities, particularly the increasing public demand for Islamic education, but also poses challenges such as institutional competition and rapid technological advancement. The study further shows that strategy formulation has integrated Islamic values with global competencies, although it has not been fully based on systematic strategic analysis. Strategy implementation has been carried out through various academic and non-academic programs, yet it is constrained by coordination issues and limited resources. Meanwhile, strategy evaluation is conducted periodically but has not yet been supported by measurable performance indicators. This study concludes that the effectiveness of strategic management depends on the institution’s ability to integrate strategic environmental analysis with systematic implementation. Therefore, strengthening analytical approaches and developing performance-based evaluation systems are essential to enhance the competitiveness of Islamic educational institutions in the global era.

Abstract

Islamic family law politics in Indonesia develops through complex dialectical interactions between religion, state, local culture, and national legal reform movements. This complexity is intensified by diverse Islamic legal schools and political currents seeking either formalization or substantivization of Islamic law within the national system. This article analyzes these dynamics using Moh. Mahfud MD’s dialectical relationship theory, focusing on how Islam, the state, and culture shape the formation and reform of family law. This study employs normative legal research with conceptual and historical approaches, examining primary and secondary legal materials on Islamic family law and Mahfud MD’s theory. The findings show that Islamic family law evolves through a selective positivization process guided by cultural and substantive approaches integrating Islamic values into the Pancasila constitutional framework without requiring a formal Islamic state. Key legislation such as the Marriage Law (1974), Religious Courts Law (1989), and Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) reflect a productive synthesis between Islamic norms and national law. Thus, Islamic family law in Indonesia develops through dialectical negotiation rather than unilateral Islamization, with Mahfud MD’s framework offering a reconciliatory paradigm for embedding Islamic values within the national legal system.

Abstract

The transformation of Islamic authority in the digital age represents a critical juncture in the Muslim world's engagement with modernity. This study examines the post-charismatic condition characterized by the routinization of authority away from individual leaders toward institutional and algorithmic systems through an integrated analysis of hermeneutical innovation, moral philosophy, and political practice. Using Critical Synthesis methodology grounded in contextual critical historical inquiry and analysis (CCHIA), we investigate three interconnected domains: (1) the Ma'na-cum-Maghza hermeneutical framework for Qur'anic interpretation; (2) the integration of classical Islamic moral philosophy into contemporary education; and (3) the divergent trajectories of political transformation in Indonesia and Central Asia. Our findings reveal that successful post-charismatic transitions depend on what we term 'reflective-critical' civil society engagement, which balances spiritual depth with democratic responsiveness. The Indonesian case of Lakpesdam NU demonstrates how religious communities can foster participatory democracy through multi-layered communication strategies, while Central Asian contexts illustrate the risks of 'reconstituted charisma' in the absence of such institutional safeguards. We argue that the future of Islam in the digital age hinges on the ummah's capacity to synthesize classical scholarly traditions with the affective and epistemological demands of technologically mediated publics. This article contributes to Islamic studies and political science by mapping the theoretical and practical dimensions of post-charismatic authority in the context of digital globalization.

Abstract

The development of the internet and social media has brought significant changes to patterns of public political participation. The presence of digital space allows the public to obtain political information, voice their aspirations, and respond to various public issues and policies more quickly and openly. On the other hand, this ease of access also brings a range of ethical challenges, such as the spread of unverified information, the use of impolite language, and the prevalence of hate speech in political interaction on social media. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of internet and social media use and their influence on the ethics of public political participation in the city of Bandar Lampung. The study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation involving social media–using members of the public, university students, and a representative of the Bandar Lampung City Communication and Informatics Office as research informants. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the internet and social media have become the primary space for public political participation in obtaining information, voicing aspirations, and responding to public issues. However, the ethical quality of this political participation still faces a range of challenges, particularly related to the spread of hoaxes, low levels of information verification, and the use of inappropriate language in digital spaces. Strengthening digital literacy and the ethics of political communication is therefore an important factor in achieving political participation that is responsible, democratic, and grounded in ethical values
