Abstract

This article analyzes Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) political strategies across five electoral contests in Indonesia from 2005 to 2024. The study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method to examine patterns of political communication, campaign strategy, and power consolidation undertaken by Jokowi. It uses an integrative theoretical framework that combines populism theory, political communication theory, and coalition theory as analytical tools. The findings indicate that Jokowi’s dialogic, egalitarian, and people-oriented leadership style served as the primary foundation of his electoral success. He relied on strategies such as blusukan (impromptu visits to communities), social media use, and program-based campaigns focused on pro-people policies, including the restructuring of street vendors, the Jakarta Health Card (Kartu Jakarta Sehat), and the Jakarta Smart Card (Kartu Jakarta Pintar). Party consolidation and broad coalition-building further strengthened his political base, supported by digital volunteers and millennial groups. In the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections, Jokowi capitalized on his image of simplicity, closeness to the people, and endorsements from influential figures such as Jusuf Kalla and Ma’ruf Amin. Approaching the 2024 election, Jokowi’s political influence remained significant despite his not running for office, with the so-called “Jokowi effect” playing a role in shaping voter support. This study argues that Jokowi’s success should not be understood merely as a combination of leadership style and campaign techniques, but as a systematic integration of populist appeal, adaptive political communication, and pragmatic coalition-building. Theoretically, this research contributes to the development of electoral politics studies in Indonesia by offering an integrative analytical framework for understanding contemporary political leadership. Practically, the findings provide insights for political actors and campaign strategists in designing effective, adaptive, and context-sensitive electoral strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the framing of corruption news in Tribun Medan online media during the 2024–2025 period using Robert N. Entman’s framing model. The research addresses how corruption is constructed through the dimensions of problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through news text documentation and in-depth interviews with the Law and Criminal Editor of Tribun Medan to strengthen data validity through source triangulation. The findings reveal that Tribun Medan frames corruption not merely as a legal issue involving state financial losses but also as a social problem affecting public rights and religious facilities. The identified causes emphasize systematic planning manipulation and weak oversight in strategic infrastructure projects. Moral evaluations are articulated through representations of public concern and social accountability toward perpetrators, while recommended solutions focus on judicial transparency and institutional reform within the bureaucracy. The study’s novelty lies in its integration of textual framing analysis with editorial perspectives to explain how a local online news outlet constructs corruption narratives within the socio-cultural context of North Sumatra. The findings indicate that Tribun Medan performs a watchdog journalism function by fostering public awareness and reinforcing collective social responsibility regarding corruption issues.

Abstract

The increasing use of TikTok as a platform for public interaction during natural disasters has transformed the way disaster-related information is disseminated and interpreted, yet studies examining the characteristics of netizen responses in this context remain limited. This study explores the patterns of netizen responses on TikTok to natural disasters in North Sumatra and Aceh in 2025. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through virtual observation, digital documentation, and literature review, with primary data obtained from comments and viral content related to the Aceh Tamiang flood. Data were analyzed using the Computer-Mediated Communication and Stimulus-Organism-Response frameworks. The findings reveal diverse response patterns, including affective responses (empathy and solidarity), cognitive responses (criticism of government disaster management), and conative responses (encouragement of humanitarian action). The comments section functioned as a discursive space for shaping public opinion, while word cloud visualization and sentiment analysis highlighted dominant narratives of humanity and solidarity alongside institutional criticism. The novelty of this study lies in integrating qualitative digital discourse analysis with sentiment mapping to explain how TikTok facilitates participatory disaster communication and public opinion formation. The study concludes that TikTok plays a significant role in interactive disaster communication while simultaneously increasing the risk of misinformation in digital environments.

Abstract

As multicultural societies continue to experience increasing cultural interaction, understanding how traditional performing arts function as media of intercultural communication has become an important scholarly concern. This study examines the meaning of Lemang Dance from the perspective of cross-cultural communication in Tebing Tinggi City to explore how the performance represents cultural identity while facilitating communication among diverse ethnic communities. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that Lemang Dance embodies the community’s collective identity and conveys nonverbal messages through movements, facial expressions, costumes, and musical accompaniment that symbolize mutual cooperation, harmony, and togetherness. The performance is widely understood and appreciated by different ethnic groups, demonstrating its role as an effective medium of cross-cultural communication. The novelty of this study lies in positioning Lemang Dance as a traditional performing art that functions simultaneously as a cultural identity marker and an intercultural communication medium within a multicultural society. The findings contribute to the advancement of cultural communication studies and provide practical insights for preserving local cultural heritage while strengthening intercultural understanding through traditional performing arts.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a library service visualization using 3600 Virtual Reality as a user education medium at the Malang State University Library. Unlike previous studies that relied on head-mounted displays or conventional video-based orientation, this study develops an accessible desktop Virtual Reality platform integrated with AI-generated narration, enabling immersive user education without additional hardware. The research addresses the lack of interactive orientation media and the high frequency of repetitive technical inquiries regarding library services. Utilizing the Research and Development (R&D) method with the Borg and Gall model, the study developed a desktop Virtual Reality product integrated with AI-generated audio narration. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and validation by material, media experts and library practitioner, followed by user trials. Results indicate that the Virtual Reality media is highly feasible, with material validation reaching 88%, media validation at 94% and library practitioner validation at 91%. User trials showed an 91% satisfaction rate, confirming that the Virtual Reality media effectively enhances user understanding of library procedures, such as self-service lockers and circulation. In conclusion, the implementation of Virtual Reality technology provides an immersive, self-directed learning experience that reduces library anxiety and improves operational efficiency for library staff.

Abstract

This study examines the historical development, symbolic meanings, functions, and cultural transformation of the Gundala-Gundala Dance in Berastagi, a traditional performance of the Karo people rooted in the Sigurda-gurdi mythology and the Ndilo Wari Udan rain ritual. The research addresses the changing role of the dance amid social, cultural, and religious transformations while exploring how its cultural significance has been maintained. Employing Kuntowijoyo’s historical method, the study collected data through literature review, observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that the Gundala-Gundala Dance embodies spiritual, symbolic, and social values manifested through its movements, masks, costumes, and traditional music. Although its primary function has shifted from a sacred rain-invoking ritual to cultural performances, festivals, tourism, and official ceremonies, the dance continues to preserve the collective identity and cultural values of the Karo community. The novelty of this study lies in integrating historical analysis with cultural transformation to explain the continuity and adaptation of Gundala-Gundala as both ritual heritage and cultural performance. These findings contribute to the development of cultural communication and heritage studies while providing practical insights for safeguarding Karo cultural heritage amid contemporary social change.

Abstract

This study employed a qualitative library research approach by critically reviewing relevant scholarly literature and recent studies on digital transformation in Islamic education management. The findings indicate that major challenges include unequal digital infrastructure, limited technological competencies among educational stakeholders, organizational resistance to change, and the need to maintain Islamic ethical values in digital environments. At the same time, digital transformation creates opportunities to improve administrative efficiency, support data-driven decision-making, expand access to educational resources, and strengthen institutional collaboration through digital platforms. The novelty of this study lies in its integrative analysis that positions digital transformation not merely as technological adoption but as a strategic management reform grounded in Islamic educational values. The study concludes that effective digital transformation requires visionary leadership, continuous professional development, sound digital governance, and the integration of technological innovation with Islamic ethical principles. These findings provide both conceptual and practical contributions for strengthening the sustainability and quality of Islamic education management in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to collect, analyze, and expand the theory of style contained in the novel Si Anak Spesial by Tere Liye, focusing on stylistic features that characterize children’s literature in the text. The study examines how stylistic elements are constructed through simple language and adapted narrative forms within the novel. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative using a stylistic approach. The data in this study include phrases, sentences, and conversations. The data source in this study comes from the novel entitled Si Anak Spesial by Tere Liye. Data collection techniques in this study include literature studies, notes, and analysis. The data analysis stage in this study includes three steps: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal 15 stylistic data consisting of five instances of simple lexical language, five instances of simple syntactic structures, three instances of adapted narrative forms in the form of phrases, and two instances of adapted characterization patterns. The analysis shows that the stylistic construction of the novel is dominated by simple syntactic structures and adapted narrative elements, which function to facilitate comprehension for child readers. These stylistic characteristics demonstrate how linguistic simplicity and narrative adaptation operate as key strategies in shaping children’s literature.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) subjects in enhancing teachers’ spiritual role-modeling at Rahmat Islamiyah Elementary School, Medan. The research employed a qualitative approach using field study methods, including observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the systematic management of Islamic Religious Education (PAI), encompassing planning, implementation, and evaluation, plays a pivotal role in shaping teachers’ attitudes and behaviors as spiritual role models for students. Teachers function not merely as transmitters of knowledge but as exemplars of moral and spiritual integrity in their daily school interactions. Furthermore, the study reveals that teachers who consistently apply holistic management practices demonstrate strong spiritual discipline both within and beyond the classroom. Strengthening the management of Islamic Religious Education therefore enhances teachers’ capacity for spiritual exemplarity and contributes significantly to the development of students’ religious character.

Abstract

Social Studies education in Indonesia continues to experience tension between the transmission of knowledge and the imperative to cultivate critical, participatory, and socially responsible citizens. This study examines how reconstructionism can function as a curricular epistemology capable of addressing these challenges within the context of digital-era citizenship. Employing a philosophical-comparative approach combined with a genealogical analysis of Indonesian Social Studies curricula from the 1975 Curriculum to the Merdeka Curriculum (2022), the study investigates the philosophical continuity and transformation of reconstructionist ideas. The findings reveal three major gaps: the absence of an operational framework for classroom implementation, inconsistencies between reconstructionist curricular objectives and assessment practices, and the limited incorporation of contemporary learning theories into reconstructionist discourse. In response, this article proposes Stratified Reconstructionism, a multi-layered conceptual model integrating four traditions of Social Studies education—citizenship transmission, social sciences, reflective inquiry, and social criticism—within a transformative pedagogical cycle. Drawing upon Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development and Ausubel’s meaningful learning theory, the model facilitates students’ progression from understanding social realities to critical reflection and civic action. The study argues that reconstructionism provides a coherent philosophical foundation for strengthening democratic citizenship, critical thinking, and social engagement in Indonesian Social Studies education.
