Abstract

Museums in Indonesia remain underutilized, as their educational function is frequently reduced to serving merely as media and sources for historical learning, while their broader institutional, cultural, and professional dimensions receive limited attention. This study addresses this partial approach by examining overlooked dimensions of museums and proposing alternative assignment designs, learning outputs, and assessment instruments for museum-based educational activities. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study draws on direct observation and a literature review encompassing scholarly journals, books, theses, newspapers, YouTube content, and relevant articles. The findings demonstrate that museum exploration can extend beyond reconstructing historical narratives from collections to examining institutional origins, collection provenance and acquisition, conservation systems, professional expertise, exhibition practices, promotional strategies, and operational challenges. These dimensions provide opportunities for students to develop more comprehensive, critical, and contextual understandings of museums. The study concludes that educational visits to museums should adopt a multidimensional learning framework and incorporate assignments oriented toward innovative outputs, supported by appropriate assessment instruments, thereby transforming museum visits from passive observation into meaningful and productive learning experiences.

Abstract

Declining student participation in student organizations at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra has become a concern because these organizations play a vital role in character building, social skill development, and leadership education. This study analyzes the level of student participation, identifies the factors contributing to low participation, and examines its implications for leadership education. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using interviews, observation, and documentation involving 20 informants, including active, semi-active, and inactive students as well as student organization administrators. The findings reveal that student participation remains low to moderate due to high academic workloads, the dominance of digital technology, limited organizational interest, weak leadership development, economic constraints, and poor time management. These factors weaken leadership regeneration and reduce opportunities for developing leadership competencies. This study contributes to the higher education literature by demonstrating that improving leadership education requires adaptive organizational governance and inclusive cadre development, rather than relying solely on student motivation. Therefore, strengthening cadre development, innovating organizational programs, utilizing social media effectively, and fostering an inclusive organizational environment are essential to increasing student participation and leadership development.

Abstract

Emping melinjo, a traditional melinjo-based cracker, represents a strategic home-based agro-industrial commodity in Pidie Regency with substantial economic and cultural value. Its sustainability, however, is increasingly threatened by raw-material scarcity resulting from aging melinjo trees, inadequate systematic replanting, limited product innovation, and the 2025 hydrometeorological floods, which destroyed approximately 70% of the local melinjo tree population. This study examines the key challenges affecting the sustainability of emping melinjo production and identifies strategies for strengthening its post-flood resilience. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with farmers and women artisans and complemented by field observations. The findings demonstrate that inadequate tree regeneration and extensive flood damage substantially reduced raw-material availability and production capacity, while reliance on traditional production and marketing practices constrained market competitiveness. The study concludes that sustaining emping melinjo requires an integrated strategy encompassing intensive replanting, targeted cultivation and commercialization, context-sensitive product innovation, premium packaging, and digital marketing to restore production capacity, strengthen market competitiveness, and preserve the commodity’s long-term economic and cultural viability.
