Abstract

Increasing Production Capacity of Oyster Mushroom Farmers in Karangpring Village through Baglog Two-Level Pressing Technology. The production capacity of baglog manually by oyster mushroom farmers in Karangpring Village, Sukorambi District, Jember Regency is 1,250 baglogs/month with a low average productivity of about 625 kg/4 months which is only done by 2 workers. About 25% of the total baglog made had poor oyster mushroom mycelium growth due to the lack of density of baglog so oyster mushrooms could not be harvested. The problem that can be identified is the lack of experienced workers who can properly compact baglog from F3 oyster mushroom seeds. Oyster mushroom baglog that is less dense causes the growth of oyster mushroom mycelia to be inhibited, resulting in decreased productivity. There needs to be empowerment that aims to provide education on the technique of properly compacting the oyster mushroom baglog while at the same time providing assistance with a two-lever baglog press. The method used in this empowerment activity is training and demonstration of the use of a two-lever baglog press. The result of this service activity is that baglog pressing training is carried out with a two-lever baglog pressing machine for oyster mushroom farmers. With this tool, the baglog compaction process is faster with the right density (100%) where previously 25% of the total baglog that was compacted could not be completely compacted if done manually. The production target of F3 oyster mushroom seeds, which was originally very late, became on time with only 2 workers assisted by a two-lever baglog pressing machine. Empowerment of oyster mushroom farmers through training and the provision of a two-lever baglog press was able to increase the production of F3 oyster mushroom seedlings of 10,500 baglog per month with an increase in production efficiency of 573% compared to before using the tool.

Abstract

Empowerment of Sumber Abadi Forest Farmer Groups through Innovation of Porang Nursery Techniques. Forest Farmers Group (FFG) Sumber Abadi is located in Panglungan Village, Wonosalam District, Jombang Regency, whose area is 500-750 m asl and daily temperature of 20° C. The conditions of socio-economic need to be improved, considering that their livelihoods depend on forest products and half of the population belongs to the category of pre-prosperous families. Panglungan village has the largest porang area and has the potential for a profitable porang seed business, encouraging farmers to carry out traditional nurseries to fulfill the increasing demand for seeds. Porang is a super strategic commodity and prospectus as a healthy food, low carbohydrates and high fiber, and a high tuber selling price (Rp 10,000,-/kg). Obstacles in the porang nursery business in Panglungan Village, namely: (1) lack of understanding of proper nursery techniques, (2) weak innovation of porang nurseries, (3) lack of understanding of seed supply chain management, and (4) weak of institutional functioning. The aim of the activity is to increase empowerment through innovative porang nursery techniques. Empowerment methods include: (1) training on innovation in porang nursery technology on various seed sources, (2) demonstration plots for porang nurseries, (3) economic empowerment of rural communities, (4) training on marketing porang seeds online. The results of the empowerment of FFG Sumber Abadi showed that there were 2 groups of porang seed breeders who were innovative in seeding techniques and marketing with a volume of more than 2 million seeds that lasted for 5 months.

Training on Preservation and Parchment Skins Making for Utilization of Rabbit Skins at Bantul Rabbit Breeders Group. The waste product of rabbit breeders includes rabbit skin. Most rabbit breeders require assistance in processing and utilizing rabbit skin waste. This activity aims to help rabbit breeders get more skilled at recognizing the potential of rabbit skins and developing products from them. Due to this, rabbit skin may have a higher commercial worth. The method used in this activity is participatory counseling, which involves the participants directly in the training activities. The activity is accomplished in three steps: collaboration with the rabbit breeders' group and the neighborhood's head; implementation of the rabbit breeders' training program; and evaluation. The activity results showed that the participants were enthusiastic, interested and provided favorable comments throughout the program. The evaluation results have shown that the instructors scored 85,62 on a scale of 0 to 100 for their performance. This condition shows that the participants can well receive the delivery of material by the instructor. In the evaluation of the organizers as a whole, they got an average of 4.05 (scale 0–5). The results of the average pretest and posttest scores increased from 68 to 77, or around 13.24% of the value. The materials provided throughout training are helpful for rabbit breeders in terms of maintaining rabbit skin and employing rabbit skin in the production of parchment skin.

Abstract

A small medium enterprise (SME) of BROWNIESTA produces tempeh brownies products and is located in Pengkok Village, Kedawung District, Sragen Regency. The community service activities in 2020 conducted by the service team of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) were proven to increase the production capacity and quality of tempeh brownies. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the cessation of BROWNIESTA SMEs’ production activities. Along with the improvement in post-pandemic conditions, product demand is increasing. However, the increase in product demand could not be fully handled by BROWNIESTA SMEs. BROWNIESTA SMEs experienced difficulties, such as inadequate production equipment and lacking marketing techniques. BROWNIESTA SMEs must also be maintained through product innovation, such as steamed tempeh brownies production. Hence, this service activity aims to increase production efficiency and capacity, elevate tempeh brownies diversification, and improve product marketing techniques at BROWNIESTA SMEs. The service activities involved the appropriate technology introduction through the following activities: 1) a stand mixer and steamer introduction; and 2) the training of entrepreneurship, information technology (IT)-based marketing, and direct selling strategies. A stand mixer introduction succeeded in increasing brownies’ production efficiency by preventing the repetition of dough production in each batch. Brownies’ production capacity also increased up to 20-25% products/day. The steamer introduction successfully produced steamed tempeh brownies, thus tempeh brownies diversification was accomplished. Several training activities were proven to increase BROWNIESTA SMEs’ knowledge, especially regarding online marketing, by launching their first Instagram account to improve business activities.

Abstract

Quality Improvement of Emping Melinjo through Pressing Process and Reduction of Purin Level at SME Emping Jago. Emping melinjo is one of the popular foods among Indonesians. Kartasura is one of the districts in Sukoharjo that has potential in the production of emping melinjo. This study aimed to improve the quality of emping melinjo by using a mechanical pressing machine and reducing the purin level. The method used was a literature review based on scientific journals, books, and others. The results were to substitute the pressing process using mechanical machinery and by soaking treatment to reduce the purin levels. The improvement on pressing process were performed as an innovation so the process will not depend on human workers. Then, the soaking in a 4% acetic acid solution (vinegar) varied for 0; 10; 20; and 40 minutes. The hypoxanthine and adenine levels (in micrograms per gram), according to the soaking duration, showed 46,43; 41,50; 41,05; 36,71; and 124,74; 110,90; 109,83; 108,82 respectively. The 40 minutes soaking process could decrease the purin level by 20%.
