Abstract

Indonesia has a quite serious nutrition problem, marked by a high number of cases of malnutrition, also known as Malnutrition. This malnutrition is a consequence that arises from nutritional status.  Indonesia's stunting rate over five years shows an average figure of 36.4% from 2005 to 2017, which is why Indonesia is still categorized as lagging behind. Meanwhile, data from the end of 2022 to the beginning of 2023 shows that the stunting rate in Sengkerang Village is 7.92%. Out of a total of 774 measured toddlers, 74 are experiencing stunting issues. Therefore, this research focuses on discussing the factors influencing the stunting rate in Sengkerang Village and the dialectic of culture and health in addressing health issues in Sengkerang Village. The aim of this research is to identify the factors affecting the stunting rate in Sengkerang Village and to describe how the dialectic of culture and health addresses the stunting problem in Sengkerang Village, Central Lombok. This study uses qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach. The research results show that the factors causing stunting are as follows: cultural and traditional factors of the community that influence stunting rates, social and economic factors of the family, health and environmental cleanliness factors, the parenting patterns of the current village community towards children, and government policies and interventions. Therefore, a dialectic of culture and health is needed to address the following health issues: 1) Understanding local culture, 2) Collaboration with local figures, 3) Use of media and cultural communication, and 4) Multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract

This article explores the concept of "Everyday Peace" in North Lombok, Indonesia, focusing on how this diverse region maintains ethno-religious harmony. Drawing upon Roger Mac Ginty's concept of "everyday peace," the study highlights the crucial role of local actors, rather than international interventions, in peacebuilding through daily routines, norms, and community interactions. North Lombok, despite its religious and ethnic diversity, has successfully avoided conflicts often seen in other parts of Lombok. Key factors contributing to this peace include the acceptance of differences, freedom of worship, and connectivity through interfaith collaboration. The article illustrates how local communities, youth groups, traditional leaders, and the government work together to promote tolerance, with religious festivals and community events serving as platforms for peaceful coexistence.  Employing an explanatory research method, the study investigates the cause-and-effect relationships within this social phenomenon, elucidating the observed dynamics by illustrating the positions and relationships between variables based on factual field observations. This approach goes beyond mere description, providing evidence for various possible explanations within the phenomenon. Primary data collection involves direct engagement in the field through observation, interviews, and questionnaires, while secondary data is sourced from reputable books, journals, and websites relevant to the research topic. The study concludes that everyday peace, rooted in local traditions and mutual respect, is a viable model for managing diversity and preventing conflict in multicultural societies. This approach, integrating local values and international frameworks, offers valuable insights for peacebuilding in other heterogeneous regions.

Abstract

Vulnerable groups at the margins of development are often the most affected in the development process. The development of the Mandalika area as a new tourism center exposes vulnerable groups to situations that require them to be able to adapt to the development of tourism economic activities in the region. This study aims to examine the obstacles to livelihood adaptation of vulnerable groups in relocation due to the development of the Mandalika Tourism Area. This research is case study research with a qualitative approach. Theoretically, in one spectrum, this research uses a political economy perspective as an alternative in understanding the dynamics of vulnerable groups of coastal communities who are relocated due to the infiltration of ongoing tourism development in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone. This research found a number of obstacles in the process of adapting the livelihoods of vulnerable groups, namely related to the protracted relocation process, the economic value in land and settlement compensation is small, relocation is oriented towards resettlement rather than socio-economic recovery of the community and the characteristics of jobs available in the area have not favored the needs of vulnerable groups. This research sees that there are differences in the pace of economic development and social development where state intervention in supporting regional operations is still concentrated on infrastructure development in stimulating business activities for the needs of the tourism economy. Meanwhile, social development, especially interventions to support economic recovery and adapt the livelihoods of vulnerable groups, has not yet become the main discourse in supporting the economic transformation of local communities.

Abstract

This article emphasizes power relations and gender equality dynamics in resource management in the artisanal oil mining sector of South Sumatra. Michel Foucault’s perspective on knowledge and power is used to explore how power structures that change women’s roles emerge as a result of livelihood shifts from rubber farming to artisanal oil mining. The descriptive qualitative study with live-in assisted in the process of interviewing and observing a number of artisanal oil miners as well as women in Dusun Tue, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Historically, women were active and equal in economic activities based on rubber farming. However, the emergence of artisanal mining has seen women’s roles gradually excluded from productive spaces, especially at mining sites due to perceived “taboos”. This exclusion is part of a power strategy that produces gender inequality through normalized social norms. Nevertheless, a critical analysis perspective helps to see the uniqueness of various forms of power and resistance and women’s agents to resist such discrimination. Even though they are excluded from mining sites, women remain involved in mining activities through mining partnerships, scavenging for oil spills, and even determining well-drilling locations through the ritual of “meniduri tanah”. Women also play an important role in local economic empowerment through micro, small, and medium enterprises, thus continuing to contribute to family and community livelihoods. This study illustrates that power is contested in various contexts. In artisanal oil mining, the relationship between men and women reveals not only structural inequality but also the process of women’s struggle over their role in the local economy. Hence, this study provides an important perspective on the role of gender in resource management in the informal sector. Further, economic changes not only increase gender inequality but also enable empowerment and resistance strategies.

Abstract

Ethnic Chinese are spread throughout the world, including in Indonesia. They have long been part of the diversity of the Indonesian nation, even before independence. The presence of the Chinese community in Indonesia has been integrated significantly and is considered an integral part of the identity of the Indonesian nation. The aim of this research is to find out how ethnic Chinese are stereotyped in the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed at and to find the meaning and signs used by the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed at in presenting Chinese ethnicity. The approach used is communication sociology with the theory used to solve this research is semiotic theory. The object of the research is the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed at, which is an Indonesian film produced and broadcast in 2015 with a duration of 95 minutes. The method used in this research is a qualitative method using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis technique. The results of the research show that there are several scenes depicting Chinese ethnic stereotypes in the film Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed At. The character Ernest in this film is depicted as a character who often experiences unpleasant treatment or bullying in his environment. There are scenes where Ernest is clearly called derogatory names such as "Chinese", reflecting the differences in cultural background between Ernest and those around him. This film also breaks the stereotype that exists in society, that ethnic Tinghoa/Chinese descendants are deceitful, stingy and want to win for themselves. The Chinese ethnicity in this film is described by Ernest Prakasa that not all Chinese descendants have the same characteristics as society's perception of Chinese descendants.
