Abstract

Unequal access to continuous teacher competency development remains a challenge in rural and remote areas of Indonesia, including West Golewa District, Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Geographic conditions, limited access to electricity and the internet, and distance from the regency capital restrict teachers’ opportunities for sustained training and mentoring. This community service program aimed to strengthen the pedagogical and professional competencies of elementary and junior high school teachers through contextual, culture-based learning. The program involved 40 teachers from six partner schools, comprising 25 elementary and 15 junior high school teachers. The program was implemented through four stages: needs assessment, training, practice and material development, and mentoring and evaluation. Data were collected through pretest-posttest instruments and classroom mentoring observations. The results indicated improved teacher understanding, with the mean score increasing from 58.5 to 82.3, shifting from the low to the good category. Overall, teachers’ competencies increased by 40.7% following training, instructional material development, mentoring, and evaluation. Teachers also demonstrated active participation in discussions and practical activities, as well as in the development of learning materials based on local culture. The program’s sustainability is supported through regular mentoring, implementation monitoring, and strengthening teacher learning communities.

Abstract

Waste management remains a challenge in rural communities, particularly in handling dry, non-recyclable residual waste. This community engagement program aimed to support waste management through education and the use of appropriate incinerator technology in Kedunglurah Village, Trenggalek, East Java, Indonesia. A participatory community empowerment approach based on Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) involved 50 households, the village government, and the community engagement team. Activities comprised four stages: community consultation and asset identification, waste-management education, incinerator fabrication and assembly, and demonstration and application. Discussions, question-and-answer sessions, waste classification and segregation practices, and training addressed residual-waste selection, incinerator operation, and ash handling. The program produced a 10-kg-per-batch incinerator constructed from lightweight concrete blocks, mortar, cement, and sand, equipped with an 8-mm iron grate, a ventilation opening, a loading door, and a chimney. The technology was intended for selected dry, non-recyclable residual waste and required proper segregation, safe operation, responsible ash handling, and regular maintenance. Participants demonstrated active engagement, and the incinerator was successfully produced and introduced. However, no quantitative measurements of knowledge change, waste-volume reduction, long-term behavioral change, or continuous performance were conducted. Monitoring is required to assess long-term effectiveness and sustainability.

Abstract

Waste cooking oil (WCO) management in Tamansari Village, Wonorejo District, Pasuruan Regency, remains a concern due to improper disposal and limited community knowledge. A preliminary assessment of 50 households estimated that more than 166 L of WCO could be generated weekly. This program aimed to improve community knowledge, practical skills, and environmental awareness while establishing a digital WCO collection mechanism. The main novelty was the Mommy Jelantah application, integrating member identification, deposit-weight recording, quality grading, differentiated pricing, and automatic income estimation. WCO was classified into Grades A, B, and C based on clarity, color, and visible residues, with corresponding prices of IDR 7,000, IDR 4,500, and IDR 2,500 per kg. The program employed Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving 30 participants. Evaluation used pre- and post-test questionnaires, observation, and a four-point satisfaction questionnaire. Knowledge increased from 42% to 88%, skills from 25% to 86%, and environmental awareness from 38% to 90%. The results indicate that integrating practical training with digital collection can strengthen traceable WCO management and support circular economy practices.

Abstract

Digital technology offers opportunities for local businesses to improve information dissemination and marketing, yet many village businesses still rely on communication and social media without integrated information platforms. Latar Bale, a poultry business in Mulyoarjo Village, Lawang District, Malang Regency, sells chicken eggs and spent hens and previously relied on direct sales and WhatsApp for sales. This program aimed to empower Latar Bale managers through website development and capacity building, enabling independent operations and marketing. Five managers participated in a program involving observation, needs identification, discussion, website development, training, mentoring, and evaluation. Training and mentoring were conducted in two 60-minute sessions. The website provides profiles, product information, documentation, locations, and contact information. Management capacity was assessed before and after the program using a 1–4 scale across four indicators. Scores increased from 2 to 4 for website access, from 1 to 3 for product updating, from 1 to 3 for content management, and from 1 to 4 for marketing use. The average score increased from 1.25 to 3.50, indicating improved management capacity. The website provides a marketing platform, although sales were not measured. Sustainability requires regular content updates and integration with WhatsApp.

Abstract

Illegal street racing is a form of juvenile delinquency that remains a social problem in Bulukumba Regency. This phenomenon poses risks to safety and public order and carries legal consequences for those involved. This community service activity aims to improve students' legal understanding at MAN 1 Bulukumba regarding the dangers of illegal street racing and its legal consequences. The activity involved 25 students through four stages: a pre-test, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), a case study, and a post-test. The educational material covered the causes, impacts, legal provisions, and preemptive and preventive measures for curbing illegal street racing. Evaluation was conducted using 10 multiple-choice questions on both the pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed descriptively by comparing the average scores before and after the activity. The results showed an increase in the average score from 78.0 on the pre-test to 94.4 on the post-test, representing a rise of 16.4 points. This increase reflects a change in the participants’ understanding following the legal education session. This activity can serve as an educational initiative to strengthen students’ legal awareness and help prevent illegal street racing among teenagers.
