Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia are increasingly developing as centers of community empowerment. However, daily food provision remains a challenge, especially in urban areas with limited land and budget constraints. This community service program used a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach to develop a hydroponics-based urban farming model to strengthen food self-sufficiency and improve students’ practical agribusiness skills. Conducted over one year, the program involved needs assessment, socialization, hydroponics training, greenhouse installation, and ongoing mentoring. A total of 22 participants completed the program. The hydroponic unit achieved four harvest cycles, producing an estimated 96–104 kg of leafy vegetables annually. With a local retail value of around Rp18,000 per kg, the harvest contributed an estimated annual food savings of Rp1.7–1.9 million. Competency assessment also showed notable improvement, with average participant scores increasing from 52 to 82. These findings indicate that hydroponics offers a practical, scalable, and low-space solution for supporting food resilience and skill development in urban pesantren

Abstract

The development of tourism villages has become a key strategy in Indonesia’s rural development to support economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, many tourism villages still face challenges in applying sustainable tourism principles, especially those with limited institutional capacity and governance. Pasar Sawahan tourism in Kalongan Village is a community-based destination with strong local wisdom but still faces challenges in infrastructure, environmental management, and governance. Previous studies tend to focus on tourism villages in general, while limited research examines sustainability in traditional community-based tourism markets. This study aims to analyze the implementation of sustainable tourism principles and identify key challenges in Pasar Sawahan. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected from eight participants through interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results show sustainability efforts through community participation, MSME empowerment, cultural preservation, and environmental programs, although challenges remain in institutional strengthening, digital promotion, and youth involvement.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, including in the working area of the Pahandut Community Health Center, Palangka Raya. Local surveillance data showed a sharp increase in TB cases, from 82 in 2019 and 77 in 2020 to 249 in 2021, highlighting the need for stronger community-based interventions. This community service program aimed to improve public knowledge of pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB, strengthen the role of health cadres, and provide basic health screening. Activities included structured health education, interactive discussions, pre and post–knowledge assessments, symptom screening, blood pressure measurement, nutritional assessment, and supplementary nutrition. Participants included TB patients, high-risk groups, Posyandu cadres, and community members. Results showed improved participant knowledge, as indicated by higher post-test scores. Screening of 39 participants identified hypertension as the most common adult comorbidity and acute respiratory infections among children. Community-based education, combined with basic health screening, effectively increased TB awareness and supported early detection.

Abstract

Student organizations are integral to the campus political ecosystem, playing a crucial role in planning, decision-making, and allocating roles and interests within the academic environment. However, weak institutional capacity often leaves student organizations trapped in ceremonial activities without a sustainable development direction. This article reflects on the implementation of a capacity-building program for the Student Association (HIMA) of the Faculty of Sharia at the Sultan Thaha Saifuddin State Islamic University of Jambi, as an effort to strengthen the political planning for student organization development. The service program was implemented through a participatory approach, using lecture-discussion methods, focus group discussions (FGDs), simulations, and discovery learning, to enhance HIMA administrators' ability to formulate organizational visions, develop strategic plans, and collectively and accountably manage work programs. The reflection results indicate that capacity building plays a crucial role in fostering organizational political awareness, particularly in understanding the relationships among leadership, decision-making, and program sustainability. This capacity-building encourages student organizations to be more responsive to internal campus issues and more adaptive to broader social dynamics. This article emphasizes that capacity building is a political instrument for student organization development, thereby strengthening HIMA's position as an actor in planning, implementing, and controlling campus-level policies.

Abstract

Adolescents are increasingly exposed to cosmetic products and marketing claims, yet their awareness of cosmetic safety remains limited. Interactive educational approaches that combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience are still rarely implemented. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an interactive educational intervention in improving adolescents’ knowledge of cosmetic safety and the appropriate use of skincare ingredients. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted on December 3, 2025, involving n = 61 high school students. The intervention integrated BPOM-based education with a hands-on workshop on peel-off mask formulation. Knowledge was assessed using a 10-item questionnaire, which was pilot-tested for clarity and relevance. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test (p < 0.05). The mean knowledge score increased from 72.71±16.72 to 84.67±10.45, with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.002) and a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.36). The distribution of scores shifted toward higher categories, indicating improved understanding. Participants also reported high levels of satisfaction with the program. The intervention effectively improved adolescents’ knowledge of cosmetic safety. The novelty lies in integrating regulatory education with hands-on formulation activities as an interactive learning model. However, the absence of a control group and the single-setting design limit generalizability.

Abstract

Indonesia, with its rapidly growing elderly population (12% today, projected to reach 20% by 2045), faces major challenges in sustaining the quality of life of older adults. Comprehensive strategies are required to keep the elderly active, healthy, and productive, including the role of nursing homes that provide integrated health services. One promising approach is the use of traditional medicinal plants, globally recognized but remain relatively unfamiliar among the elderly. This community service program aims to educate elderly nursing home residents on the use of traditional medicinal plants. This activity adopted an educational approach using interactive games. Sixty-three elderly participants were divided into six groups. The program employed a descriptive qualitative approach supported by simple quantitative pre‑ and post‑test data to achieve a comprehensive understanding of its effectiveness. Initial knowledge was limited (83.33% scored 3–4), but after the educational intervention, four groups (66.67%) achieved excellent scores (9–10), one group (16.67%) attained good scores (7–8), and one group attained average scores (5-6). In the quiz, all questions (100%) were answered correctly. These findings highlight that interactive education can significantly improve elderly knowledge and motivation, offering a sustainable model for promoting the safe and effective use of traditional medicinal plants.

Abstract

Violence against children and women remains a significant concern within Indonesian migrant worker communities in Sabah, Malaysia, especially in plantation areas where access to protection services and reporting systems is limited. Teachers at Community Learning Centers (CLCs) are in a strategic position to help prevent and respond to such cases, yet many lack adequate knowledge and skills. This community service program aimed to strengthen teachers’ capacity as violence prevention volunteers. The program was implemented by Universitas Terbuka in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah and FGV Holdings Berhad, involving 45 teachers from nine CLCs. Participants attended a three-day training program covering violence prevention, child protection, cyberbullying awareness, reporting procedures, case management, and educational media development. Evaluation results showed substantial improvement in participants’ understanding, with knowledge levels increasing from around 60% before training to over 90% afterward. The program also established a Reading Corner and educational resources to support sustainable violence prevention efforts in vulnerable communities.
