Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the single most common cause of long-term pain and disability affecting hundreds of millions of people, which have been reported to be work-related. Dentist is one of the professions with the highest risk of de-veloping this disease. This study aims to see the level of complaints, assess the musculoskeletal risk and attacks in students at the Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 83 residents and dental interns. A struc-tured questionnaire was employed to gather data, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), Rapid Entire Body As-sessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), Quick Exposure Check (QEC). The data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 22) with Chi-Square significance and Pearson correlation test. Strong positive correlation was found between the existing incidence and risk (r=0.832) and there was a very significant relationship between incidence and MSDs (p<0.01). It was concluded that there is a relationship between ergonomic position and musculoskeletal disorders in students at HUDH. The high prevalence of MSDs and the high level of risk, as well as the attack rate based on REBA and QEC indicate im-proper and incorrect ergonomic posture habits.

Abstract

The number of partiallyedentulous adults is increasing, and many patients will require replacement of missing teeth. Although current treatment options also include fixed partial dentures and implants, removable partial dentures (RPDs) can have advant-ages and are widely used in clinical practice. However, a significant need exists to advance materials and fabrication technologies because of the unwanted health consequences associated with current RPDs. The RPDs consists of many components, such as major and minor connector, direct and indirect retainer, also rests. The variety of anatomic considerations related to oral con-ditions may affect selection of these components. The objective of this review is to discuss data related to RPDs design and factors affecting its selection. It was concluded that prosthodontists need to fully understand the basic of RPDs design princi-ples and should be familiar with those structures.

Abstract

Background: Malocclusion describes anomaly conditions in orthodontics, namely occlusion abnormal conditions. The preva-lence of malocclusion in Indonesia is still high around 80%. The management of malocclusion cases needs to pay attention ear-lier compared to being alert in adulthood. The treatment that can be performed is to use an activator functional appliance to pre-vent class II malocclusion. Objective: To review how the activator functional appliance was used in the treatment of Class II malocclusion. Methods: Scientific evidence is drawn from various literature to support this paper. Conclusion: Skeletal and dental changes can be achieved with the treatment of functional devices, activators. Activators can influence mandibular growth by increasing the rate of endochondral ossification in the condyles resulting in increased mandibular length in the treatment of Class II malocclusion. The success of the functional plane depends on the patient's developmental period, skeletal disorders, and patient cooperation.

Abstract

Objective: The use of removable dentures can cause chronic inflammation, namely denture stomatitis, caused by Candida al-bicans; with a prevalence of 15-70%. Soursop (Annonamuricata Linn) leaf extract contains alkaloids, tanin, flavonoids, and sa-ponins that act as antifungals. This study is intended to evaluate whether soursop leaf extract solution can effectively reduce the number of C.albicans colonies in heat polymerized acrylic resins. Method: With true experimental pre-post test with control group design, 25 resin plates were divided into 5 groups, 3 groups were tested with soursop leaf extract (10%, 15% and 25%), while Fittydent® and aquadest were the control groups. Samples are contaminated with C.albicans suspension and incubated; calculated before immersion 8 hours, then put in Saboroud's brouth and recalculated. Result: Wilcoxon test showed significant differences in all groups, except the aquadest group. The Mann-Whitney test compared a decrease in the number of C.albicans colonies between groups, showed significant differences between treatment groups, except between the extract group of 25% and fittydent control®. Conclusion: Soursop leaf extract solution lowers the number of C.albicans colonies in heat polymeri-zation acrylic with the most effective concentration of 25%.

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment that takes a long time carries a large risk of complications such as caries or root resorption. Various surgical and nonsurgical interventions have been performed, but non-surgical interventions are currently not widely accepted by orthodontists. Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) is a form of non-invasive technology that has been used in the medical field for more than six decades. In the field of dentistry, LIPUS stimulation has been studied, among others, to improve bone remodelling, regeneration of cementum, gingiva and periodontal ligament. This article aims to review the mechanism of LIPUS in orthodontic tooth movement. This review is expected to become a clinical practice guide to shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment using LIPUS in the future.

Abstract

The main cause of dental caries is pathogenic microorganism such as Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The most practical ways to prevent dental caries are by inhibiting and killing the bacteria. The purpose of this study is to determine the cinnamon extract can inhibit the growth of S.mutans. Dilution method was used to determine the capability of the cinnamon extract in inhibiting and killing S.mutans. The extract was obtained by maceration method and the concentration were 20%, 40%, 80% and 100%. The results showed that the extract with a minimum concentration of 40% could inhibit bacterial growth while there were not found any bacteria growing on at 80% and 100% as well as using 0.2% as a positive control. Normality test using the Shapiro-Wilk method found that the value of p(sig) > 0.05, so the data are normally distributed. On homogeneity test using the Levene test, the value of p(sig) = 0.001, while the value of p (Sig) < 0.05, so the data were not homogeneous. Then it was continued by one-way Anova to determine the different between treatment groups with value of p (sig) < 0.05 was obtained which means that there is a significant difference. Tamhanes test was conducted to determine the difference on each concentration. There is a sig-nificant difference between positive and negative control as well as on 20% and 40% concentration. The minimum killing ca-pacity concentration is 80% as bacteria are still founded on 40% concentration. It can be concluded that the present of alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, saponin, phenol, steroid and triterpenoid that contained in cinnamon extract have antibacterial properties and have the capability of inhibiting and killing S.mutans.

Abstract

Cast partial dentures is one of several treatment options that can be applied to rehabilitate partial edentulism with distal extension. Cast metal as a denture base exerts stimulation to the underlying tissue, thus prevents alveolar atrophy. However, one of the disadvantages of partial dentures with metal framework is the obviously visible retentive components attached to it, which could interfere with esthetics. This problem could be solved by using precision attachment that helps improving the esthetics, retention, stability and durability of the denture. There are two types of attachments, namely the intracoronal and extracoronal attachments. In this article, extracoronal attachments were used because they provide better esthetics.

Abstract

Dental and oral health is one of the health problems that require continuous handling because it has a very broad impact, so it needs special treatment before it's too late. Accuracy in brushing teeth is the most important thing in taking care of the teeth. Counseling is performed to produce individuals who understand and are able to practice good and correct methods of brushing teeth, so they will become healthy habits and behaviors to maintain teeth and mouth healthies. This type of activity uses coun-seling methods with flipcharts and dental models. During the counseling, participants were quite active in responding, answer-ing questions, and conducting toothbrush simulations. The technique of counseling brushing teeth is effectively to increase the knowledge of participants where seen from the direct practice of how to brush teeth.
