Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study examines the linguistic representation of social hierarchy and kinship in the Japanese animated series Chibi Maruko-chan. Grounded in sociolinguistic theories of politeness and indexicality, the research investigates how language constructs familial and social roles within the show’s narrative framework. The primary objectives are to identify and categorize specific linguistic features—including honorifics, address terms, and politeness strategies used to denote social relationships—and to analyze how these discursive practices reinforce traditional Japanese concepts of uchi (in-group) and soto (out-group). Data were collected through purposive sampling of fifteen episodes, forming a corpus of dialogue that was subsequently analyzed using directed content analysis. The findings reveal a consistent asymmetry in politeness strategies: children, particularly the protagonist Maruko, predominantly use positive politeness and casual language to express closeness, while parents and older siblings employ negative politeness, formal self-reference, and bald-on-record directives to assert authority and maintain hierarchical order. Interactions with grandparents blend affection and respect, softening hierarchical boundaries, whereas peer interactions exhibit egalitarian solidarity through direct, unmitigated speech. The study concludes that the series actively naturalizes social structures through everyday talk, serving as a rich site for the discursive reproduction of cultural norms. It contributes to media linguistics by demonstrating the value of anime as a corpus for pragmatic analysis and offers insights into the intersection of language, power, and culture in popular media.

Abstract

British Parliamentary (BP) debate is widely adopted in EFL/ESP classrooms, but prior studies often report score gains without explaining how debate drives language development. This study aimed to trace the mechanisms by which BP debate fosters L2 acquisition, focusing on fluency, discourse organisation, and pragmatic competence. Using a qualitative research method with process tracing, eight medical ESP students at Politeknik Kesehatan Mataram completed four full BP rounds. Multimodal data included audio–video recordings of speeches and POIs, written texts from case building, observational notes, and reflective journals/interviews. Data were transcribed and analysed through reflexive thematic analysis guided by three constructs: noticing, modified output, and mediation. Results show a consistent input–processing–output–mediation cycle: self-repairs declined while lexical precision increased; signposting and connectors became denser and more strategic; POIs/rebuttals featured clearer negotiation through hedging, uptake, and reformulation; and adjudicator feedback catalysed planned changes in subsequent rounds, indicating developing self-regulation. Overall, BP debate functions as a rich, mechanism-rich environment that integrates sociocultural mediation with interactionist learning, transforming performance from mechanical repetition to purposeful, confident communication. These findings support using BP debate as an authentic task-based pedagogy for ESP learners.

Abstract

Language serves as a crucial tool in delivering messages, shaping interactions, and influencing audiences, particularly in public speeches. One essential linguistic feature commonly used by speakers is directive speech acts, which function to instruct, request, advise, or encourage listeners to perform certain actions. This study analyzes directive speech acts in the speech of TGH. M. Hilmi Nadjmuddin, a prominent Islamic leader whose sermons contain strong educational and leadership values. The objectives of the study are to identify and classify directive speech acts, examine their pragmatic functions, and explore the embedded values of leadership and education. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach; the data were drawn from selected transcripts of his speeches, categorized by directive type, and analyzed contextually. The findings reveal various directive speech acts, such as commands, requests, advice, and suggestions, each serving different communicative purposes. The analysis further shows that these directive strategies not only fulfill communicative intentions but also reflect discipline, moral guidance, and leadership within the pesantren tradition. These findings highlight the significance of directive speech acts as instruments for shaping character, influencing audiences, and promoting educational values, while contributing to pragmatic studies in religious discourse.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine how the phonological features of the Javanese language represent Javanese culture through the short film Uba Rampe (2025). This study used a qualitative descriptive method; the analysis focused on spoken utterances in the film that reflect elements of Javanese cultural representation. The research applied Chomsky’s theory of sound change to explain how specific phonological adaptations function as markers of cultural identity within the Javanese linguistic system. In addition, Poedjosoedarmo’s theory of linguistic politeness provides a framework for understanding how phonological variation can embody social values, particularly those related to respect and refinement in Javanese speech. The findings revealed several distinctive phonological phenomena, including phoneme alternations, allophonic variations, and aspiration patterns, which symbolize unique culturalcharacteristics of the Javanese language. Moreover, the presence of pre-nasalization in the utterances is a salient indicator of politeness, reflecting the Javanese emphasis on harmonious social interaction and deference. These phonological features were not merely linguistic markers but also served as representations of deeper cultural meanings embedded in everyday communication. Overall, this study demonstrated that the phonological system of Javanese plays a vital role in maintaining and expressing cultural identity, illustrating the intricate intertwining of language and culture within Javanese society.
